    Great question!
    For a brief explanation It is a lock-up for the torque converter. The Torque Converter is a fluid coupler that can lose a lot of energy and fuel economy. By locking it up in 4th gear you'll get better fuel and drop your RPM"s down a little bit.

  • @MonsterTransmission
    @MonsterTransmission  11 лет назад +6

    You need a toggle switch to turn lock up off when you come to a stop, or your engine could lug and stall. A toggle switch would be the most efficient way to go for this. Thanks for commenting.

    Brake interrupt would be nice and can we leave power on all the time and use 3rd gear for towing good question . I was told
    To drill governor cover and tape it if I had no oil port ?

    Do you have to constantly flip the toggle switch on and off while driving? Can you wire this without the toggle? Just a daily driver and cruise car.

    • @MonsterTransmission
      @MonsterTransmission  5 лет назад +4

      You can wire it without the switch to have it on at all times, or just leave the switch on until you want lock up off.

    So would I need this kit to go from a 1976 C10 TH350 to a 1984 700R4 swap?
    Can I lock it up with out using a switch as if it was in the 1984 C10?

  • @MonsterTransmission
    @MonsterTransmission  11 лет назад +5

    Hey Daniel, Thanks for the questions. I'll answer them one by one for you.
    Does it need lock up at all time?
    No it does not need lock up all the time.
    My question what rpm does your guys work at?
    About 2500 rpm.
    If lower and smoother do I need put old wires for your guys kit work.
    You can use our lock up kit and your internal wiring harness.
    Hope that helps if you need anything further just let us know. Thanks

    On the plug that goes into the trans you have 4 pins, the pin between the tab and the latch that holds itno the connector in the trans is pin A, counting clockwise with the plug off facing you the 3rd pin is D. If you want to bypass the ECM, run a vacuum hose from your venture vacuum on the carb or intake to a vacuum switch... One side of the switch run to 12V.... the other side run to Pin A, cut the wire for pin D (usually black) and ground it to the transmission.

  • @Oldhillbilly
    @Oldhillbilly 11 лет назад +1

    On that model I would check the brake light switch, one side goes to the trans, the other goes to a vacuum switch under the hood.... To check at the trans, run a test light to pin A and give it 1/4 to 1/4 throttle and see if your test light comes on... If not its the brake light switch or your vacuum switch... If it does its the TCC solenoid or 3rd gear pressure switch or a bad ground which is pin D... Hope that helps... I hope that helps.. Its an easy fix...

    If the pressure switch energizes the circuit could you not use the toggle switch and hook it up to a 12v source the turns on with the stock key ignition switch. If so what if any advantages do you have with the circuit being on a toggle switch

    Hi, thanks for this video. My recently rebuild 700r4 has a working lockup solenoid but somehow the ECM is not telling the transmission to lock up. The shop has no idea how my computer system works (1984 trans am) and I was looking for simple ways to just activate the lockup manually. As I understand its just a matter of engaging the solenoid, but you put in a oil pressure in it. This is to only let the lockup engage in the (overdrive) gear so 3rf and 2nd can never have lockup?
    Regards,
    Robert

    I am looking to replace the 700R4 in my 83 Chevy K10 Scottsdale 4x4. This will be a daily driver and rarely used for off-road applications. It will be used for towing my boat, however, I do not want a weak transmission for those rare occasions that I do take it off-road or the routine shifts due to stop and go driving around town or highway trips. My engine is a 350 with a mild cam, would you recommend a stock stall converter and lock-up kit for this application?

    • @MonsterTransmission
      @MonsterTransmission  8 лет назад +2

      Thanks MJD for your question. With a mild cam you might want to look at something with a little more stall. If you provided the engine and cam specs we would be able to let you know for sure. Give us a call at 800-708-0087 and we'll be able to let you know exactly. Thanks

      I have already ordered the transmission from your company. Unfortunately, the actual cam size is unknown as I purchased the truck and the engine (350ci) was already rebuilt by someone else. I have tried to contact the actual owner or builder and not had any luck. I ordered the stock stall with the tranny. I know the stall that is in it now is to high and I really don't like it.

    Does the sensors on the valve body of the 700R4 need to be powered up before the transmission can shift correctly or does the TV cable that controlled the governor and amount of fluid pressure will allow it to change

    • @MonsterTransmission
      @MonsterTransmission  8 лет назад +2

      The switches on a 700R4 are for lock-up only they don't control the shift points. The T.V. cable and governor handle that.

  • @MonsterTransmission
    @MonsterTransmission  11 лет назад +1

    It depends on the transmission that you have.Some transmissions need complete lock-up or the unit will overheat and fail rapidly.

    Quick question below you mentioned 100 psi pressure rating on the switch. I assume it is the rating that the switch diaphragm will rupture. Is this switch a Normally open switch that Closes 28-32 PSI?

    • @MonsterTransmission
      @MonsterTransmission  7 лет назад +1

      This switch closes at 0 PSI, but some other brands do not engage until around 20-30 PSI, which is still okay. If you have any more questions on that John give us a call at 800-708-0087.

    • @MonsterTransmission
      @MonsterTransmission  4 года назад +1

      The number 2 would not signify anything in our system but if you check the side of the case or the back of the pump there should be an embossed two digit number inside a circle about 1 inch around or if you drop the pan it will be embossed on the valvebody in the middle area same size. Thank you for choosing Monster Transmissions.

      They run on hydraulics and electronics so it all depends on pressure for what gear it would go into, but it will never go into lock up in first gear.

    • @MonsterTransmission

      +Mike Boardman It could be a couple of things. A possible stuck valve in the valve body or depending on what the rear gear ratio is you could have the wrong governor installed. Hope that helps. If you have any further questions feel free to give us a call at 800-708-0087. Thanks!

    Should a first gen 700r4 transmission kick into 4th gear without lock up plug. I just installed one in my 65 elco and can't get 4th gear. I have adjusted the tv cable many times and can not get 4th gear.1st through 3rd gear shifting great but everything i read says shifting too eary.. Also nothing plugged into this plug

    • @MonsterTransmission
      @MonsterTransmission  2 года назад

      Thank you for the question! The Transmission should still have 4th gear with or without the lock up pig tail, if the transmission is not designed to be run without lock up however we would recommend getting a lock up kit. Lock up is designed to engage once the transmission reaches a certain pressure after already being in 4th gear. Give us a call if you need anything else at 800-708-0087.

    what would cause a 400 traney not to shift out of first gear it is a electric shift

    • @MonsterTransmission
      @MonsterTransmission  7 лет назад +1

      Great question John, there are a few things that can cause your TH400 to not shift out of 1st. The first thing you want to do is check to see if you can manually shift the transmission through gears. If you can not then you want to check your shifter linkage. If that is correctly hooked up then the clutches and bands are worn and it is time or a rebuild. If the transmission can be manually shifted into gear then the next step would be to check your vacuum. You need to have at least 16 inches of vacuum at idle for the transmission to shift correctly. If you have enough vacuum check to make sure that the modulator valve is not stuck. Next you want to check and make sure the valves and springs in the governor are not stuck and give it a nice cleaning. The gov. can be accessed from the passenger side of the transmission by removing the four bolts holding the gov. on. If these steps do not fix the issue then you can try manually shifting through the gears to try and clean out the valvebody. The last step will be removing the valvebody and cleaning it.
