  • Chief Data Reporter at the Financial Times John Burn-Murdoch joins Andrew Marr to discuss his viral report on the ideological divide that's emerging between young men and women in many countries around the world. The findings show a huge point difference in political views between women aged 18-30 compared to their male counterparts.
Murdoch outlines some of the key factors influencing this division, including the rise of the #MeToo movement and an increase in women going to university - emphasising that this may lead to lower birth and marriage rates in the future.
According to the study, all of this is "exacerbated by the fact that the proliferation of smartphones and social media mean that young men and women now increasingly inhabit separate spaces and experience separate cultures."

Young people*. And for women there is a compound problem with the implied responsibility to have children, because women are expected to be brood mares, but also have successful careers, but then when their careers are impacted by having children, they are told "well you chose to have children". Its like going to a restaurant with two different menus and the waiter saying "well you didn't order the steak." The steak wasn't on my menu!

The fact that more women are going to University doesnt convince me. By that logic, more men wouldve been progressive than woman for the many years that the ratio was reversed, which was not the case. I think the Internet has broadened exposure to different political views, so both men and women are considering a larger variety of points than in years past. When weighing the different options, conservatism simply has more to offer men than it does women.

I can only talk from my perspective working in the electronics industry since the late 80's. The profession has changed a LOT over the last few decades with systems ever becoming more complex to design and build, needing different skillsets to those needed when I started out. The problem is that these skills are not cheap to teach because you need competent people to teach them backed up with real-world experience of the tools needed to execute modern designs - capital outlay for equipment that is very expensive. There isn't the budget in the UK to teach these skills so the ability for us to turn out engineers is limited as placements for students diminishes.
So is it that younger generations of males don't get the opportunity to study what are seen as typically "male" professions? Going back to the turn of the century there was a huge push to outsource UK production firstly to European plants and then to the Far East, so there is less of a need for local talent? We don't have many even near state of the art electronic production facilities in the UK, let alone chip fabrication capability. Have we just let engineering in the UK die?
Is this also true of other engineering professions? Is the UK being left behind after decades of outsourcing? Is UK manufacturing now primarily automated with skilled roles being replaced by more lower skill operative roles? Is this why less males go into higher education?

Oh jeez can we not label Gen Z the 'Andrew Tate Generation'? Yes, there have been Jordan Peterson (Boomer) and Tate (Millennial) stepping into the fray with self-help guidance for men at a point when generational careers in your town's car factory are over, and the blueprint of 'being a man' from your father's generation has been challenged in every which way, but that is not the point in which you label a generation after those trying to corrupt them.
I think what is happening in this moment are struggles with identity, struggles post-economic crisis to get a start in a career and to afford living, struggles of men being afraid to talk to women and the consequences of saying the wrong thing being higher than ever (though totally right that these things must change), and little support to navigate this world.

"Liberal" doesn't mean anything; it's not a word that has much purchase in the UK, we tend to talk in terms of socialist (left wing) or conservative (right wing) principles. Younger Brits listen to a lot of American media who use the false dichotomy of liberal vs conservative, and then continue their ramble built on words that haven't been clearly defined. So it ends up being a meaningless, mangled mess of a statement. What exactly does "women are more liberal" mean? Are they voting Green or Liberal Democrat? No. Are they more engaged in civic minded endeavours, like charities, labour unions, green initiatives? No. Are they more promiscuous? Yes. So that makes them "liberal", does it?
