      Came here to say the same. Subscribed. I used to work in a music store as their tech guy, I need to pop in there again and make sure they know about this. Very interesting that if you have many translated plugins in a session that it's less efficient than translating all of Logic. Thanks! I've ordered but am still waiting on an M1 Ultra Studio (48c, 64GB) which is going to be quite the upgrade from my current Mac... which is a 2012 MacBook Pro :)

    I bought the same but with 4TB SSD, upgrading from a 2014 MacBook Pro 16gb/1TB SSD and I’m a Logic guy. It’s such a game changer, I’m doing everything “in the box” with UAD plugins, all virtual instruments, and all digital mixing. No more outboard gear. No pre-amps, no more channel strips, no outboard compression, eq or effects. When I leave my studio, I unplug 1 USB-C cable and take everything with me in the M1 Max MacBook. I love it!!!

    Hey Tano.
    I'm a huge fan of your music and channel.
    I was a little surprised at your metrics since you have maxed out spec on your Macbook Pro (except the disk). I am sure it can do a lot better.
    Here's why...
    I purchased my Mac Mini M1 with 16GB RAM and 2TB SSD in Feb 2021.
    I mostly create orchestral/Epic/trailer type of music and 98% of my plugins are Kontakt (free and full version) plugins.
    I usually create each track with an instance of Kontakt with ONLY one instrument loaded inside the Kontakt. I hate all that Kontakt with multi-timbral tracks as it really slows down my workflow.
    I have projects with 145 tracks where at least 100 of them use Kontakt and I have not had any issues in Rosetta mode. I did try to run Logic Pro X in native and I had the dreaded "audio overload" message pop up many times. But in Rosetta mode, I have not had that.
    Further more, I usually freeze most of my tracks that I know I probably wont edit again, then I can have over 200 tracks!!
    And yes I have NEVER heard the fan turn on... ever!!

    I've upgraded to a new generation MPB recently, after only a few months working with a brand new 2019 MBP, maxed out. I was very excited when I got it, to then find out I couldn't record any vocals or acoustic guitars with it because of the loudest fan noise imaginable. So glad the newer MBP are quiet and I'm looking forward to finally recording my own music. :)

      I’m just going to say, if you’re deciding on whether this is worth the price, don’t buy it. This computer is for people who straight up need the power. If this is going to be your one computer for 10 years, sure. If this is just because you like it, get the lower end version or a PC. I’m on a PC and I love these new machines, but I find it difficult to imagine a scenario that would push this level of power. The amount of computing you can do with this thing is….wow. Way more power than anyone without a full studio can justify.

    Hey - quick question. I have a similar desk setup, where the 16” MacBook M1 Max is in front of my 4K monitor, and my midi controller keyboard is in a drawer. With the drawer out, it’s a long reach to the MacBook. I see you have another keyboard and mouse, presumably so you don’t have to reach for the MacBook keyboard and track pad. Which keyboard and mouse is it? AND, where do you position the keyboard and mouse when the drawer is out?

    hey Tano! glad to stumble across your video here. I'm here rocking an M1 Macbook Air with 16gb, and i've been amazed at what it can handle (it keeps up with my two year old i9-9900k desktop). I'm curious if you are actually making use of the 64gb, with all those Kontakt instances or other sample-based VIs. Have you kept an eye on the RAM pressure? I haven't been hitting the 16gb really even, but I don't use a lot of VIs, more audio tracks. If I were to go up to a Macbook Pro, I feel like i'd probably go for the M1 Pro with 32gb ram. Curious about your experience here.
    Also FYI Pro Tools 2021.12 has been certified for Monterey now, with an update to the PT plugins to 2022.3. (Still under Rosetta of course.) It's working great here.
    Edit: just saw you answered my question in a different comment, but leaving my comment here anyway to say hi

    • @TanoBrock
      @TanoBrock  2 года назад +2

      Peter! So great to hear from you! In RUclips comments of all places haha! I think 32GB RAM is plenty for most audio use cases. I haven't monitored RAM pressure super closely, but I've checked it here and there, and it's always in the green when using Logic/Pro Tools. In the M1 native stress test I showed in the video, Logic was using 21GB of RAM. I've noticed more RAM usage when using After Effects, especially in projects with lots of layers.
      Thanks for the info about Pro Tools! I'll have to update.

    1. why does one core almost overload when you play the song in rosetta mode

    • @TanoBrock
      @TanoBrock  2 года назад +4

      1. It’s because of the limiters on my master bus. The last cpu thread deals with stuff that’s happening last, at the end of the chain before output. As I mentioned I have two limiters with oversampling on there, which is the most cpu intensive thing happening in the session. Still plays smoothly though, even with that thread maxing out!
      2. I had the thread settings in Logic on Automatic, which I guess meant using 8 cores. My understanding is that there are 8 performance cores and 2 efficiency cores, so I guess Logic on automatic just uses the 8 performance cores. I haven't done extensive testing on how it compares with forcing Logic to use all 10...

  • @Screaming-Trees
    @Screaming-Trees 2 года назад +1

    If you have plugins in your logic session that aren't compiled for ARM (Apple silicon) and you run Logic in native mode you'll get the kind of performance you've experienced yes. I.e. much worse. Basically all plugins need to native if you want to avoid that kind of performance penalty that you've experienced. Running Logic via Rosetta obviously fixes that but isn't ideal either. What you want is everything compiled for ARM. When that happens you'll get a performance that far eclipses what you get via the Rosetta workaround. Until then your options are kind of limited. Don't run any plugins that aren't compiled for Apple Silicon or use Rosetta. It sucks a little because we're almost two years into this and some of the major vendors like NI or Avid for example still haven't done much to port their large product portfolios to ARM.

    Great job again! Thanks for this. One question I’ve always had, and that one of your stress tests reminded me of: Does note density affect CPU performance? A lot, a little, not at all? Sometimes I would get the feeling (on my Trash Can) that if the VI parts I was writing were more “note-y” (lots of nerdy prog stuff, etc), the machine would get bogged down quicker than if the parts were more sparse (emo, new age 😁). Never really had the time or the inclination to do any proper tests., though. Wondering what your take would be on that.
    Other than that, thanks again for helping us make better buying decisions! Cheers!

    • @darwiniandude
      @darwiniandude 2 года назад +2

      If your budget will allow, and you want to keep the machine for 5+ years, consider getting the base M1 Ultra chip - you then get 20 CPU cores vs 10 cores, and more GPU cores of course.... it's expensive but you're literally getting double the CPU performance so in the long term that would be pretty great for video workflows etc, you get more media encode engines too. But it is pricey.

  • @alu2387
    @alu2387 2 года назад +2

    This is more difficult than it seems originally. If the M1 mini falls short for your workload there's a little chance that the M1 Pro / Max will too , mainly because the CPU core difference is minimal ( 8 CPU core on the mini, vs 10 on the Pro and the Max). The real benefit of M1 Pro and M1 Max over the original M1 is the Ram memory that is put at your disposal. But again, 2000 bucks for memory and a couple of CPU cores.. doesnt add to me. It gets even worse with the base Mac Studio. It is the same M1 Max, with 10 cores only. This puzzles me. I'd love to see a video of someone testing the same project in a m1 vs a m1 pro vs m1 max vs m1 ultra. Seems everyone if focused on video.. unfortunately.

    • @henrydorling8
      @henrydorling8 2 года назад +1

      M1 has 4 performance and 4 efficiency cores, whereas m1pro or max have 8 performance and 2 efficiency cores. So multicore cpu bump is in fact significant with twice the performance cores.

      If you are not familiar with any DAWs, then see which one looks best to you, out of the ones you have mentioned.
      They pretty much all have the same features. Ableton being geared more towards live performance but with updates, is becoming more like Cubase and Logic.
      My preference is Logic x, mainly because I use a mac and it does everything I need it to, plus many excellent updates which have all Been free so far.
      Many people speak positively about Reaper which is one of the cheapest DAWs and Garageband (mac only), alot like Logic and is Free.

    “Besides the storage” Bro what? I can’t even come close to using up 256 GB for music making.
    The base model M1 Air is overkill for music production & most other types of users as well. What are you people talking about?

    • @TanoBrock
      @TanoBrock  2 года назад +4

      It really depends on your work flow! I’ve already used up 1TB of storage on this machine. Lots of things in my workflow take up a lot of space: 96k audio files that I receive to mix, 4K video files, photoshop files, after effects animation assets, etc. And in terms of CPU power and RAM, I am definitely using this machine to its fullest capacity, recording and mixing large projects with lots of sample libraries and plugins, animating in after effects, video editing, etc. so it really depends on what you need to do! For the things mentioned above, this machine has been perfect.

It would be nice to know which Kontakt Instruments did you have load. Kontakt Version 6.7 do support M1 Apple Silicon native now. It would be nice if you can test if there is a big performance Difference between Kontakt rosetta and native mode!

    If you aren’t an advanced music producer would the MacBook Air work as well, with 8 GB and the standard stored?

    • @TJ-hs1qm
      @TJ-hs1qm 2 года назад +1

      The model presented in the video is way over spec'ed and in no way necessary for music production. I recom the 2020 256ssd 8gb Macbook air model. It is pretty capable and you can do basic music production / recording with ease. But you need to discipline yourself in your workflow to make the most out of the limited Ram... for example having a browser open with 20 tabs or watching 4k content or streaming on twitch while recording wont fly. There's also a limit how much sample based instruments the machine can take with only 8gb ram. If you can afford it, I'd go with 16 GB ram. Essentially there's no way to upgrade the machine with more ram later. The 256 GB ssd also requires some focus on music production. But at least you will be able to add an external ssd driver later. So I'd say for recording real instruments or voices and with non samples based VSTs a Mac air 2020 with 8GB/256GB can work. However you will feel the limitation in terms of ram. 16GB ram will be in the Goldilocks zone... and ssd storage wise you can decide later to add external storage if necessary. the Mac Mini is also worth checking out !

    • @TanoBrock
      @TanoBrock  2 года назад +2

      Yes, it’s because of the limiters on my master bus. The last cpu thread deals with stuff that’s happening last, at the end of the chain before output. As I mentioned I have two limiters with oversampling on there, which is the most cpu intensive thing happening in the session. Still plays smoothly though, even with that thread maxing out!

    • @henriktala
      @henriktala 2 года назад +2

      @@TanoBrock amazing thank you for clarifying. Ive also seen some thoughts that the last cpu is dedicated to input and record channels, so if you are in a session recording midi or audio, this may be reflected in that last cpu thread.
