  • Amazing what a year will do. Signed to Columbia during their awkward transition phase out of the purely primal Pacific Northwest sound to the sophisticated pop multi layered extravaganza of Good Thing is pretty remarkable. Woody Allen’s blundering introduction, calling them Paul Revere's Raiders, must have stayed a bad joke for many years. In this song one can pick out all of the various influences, a catalog that would include The Beatles, Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Harper’s Bizarre and many others. By this time, the band was probably using a lot of studio musicians to perfect their recording. Eventually that would lead to What’s It Gonna Be (Him or Me) that used very few of the actual members.

Yeah, you’re so right about the band uniforms. I forgot about that, but then that was kind of world wide thing then. I just read in Mojo Magazine that The Byrds had uniform outfits until they were stolen from the dressing room at Ciro’s dance club otherwise they would have worn those for the cover of their first Columbia album. The Woody Allen ‘blundering into’ was that he calls them Paul Revere’s Raiders, which I’m sure really pissed them off.

And, clearly, Woody Allen is making fun of their band uniforms too.
