How about two? Western Mountaineering down pants, and (currently) REI down booties, which will be replaced soon as the down is beginning to leak out at the sole seam. I think I'll try synthetic next time to deal with moisture better.
Just finished the Benton Mackaye trail as a thru hike this afternoon. There was a good deal of snow and a TON of water crossings. Tell Jupiter I say hello! I met him on my Pinhoti thru hike in 2016 when he was SOBO on his ECT hike. He gave me a Pinhoti blaze and inspired me to keep hiking and go lighter
When I was young and foolish, I would do deep snow camping in upstate NY. The days were extremely short, temperatures were very low, and nights were long. So, it was always early to bed for a very long winter's nap. Then I'd awaken at 11 PM and need to pee. After experiencing peeing in the middle of the night with temps of -20, and snow up to my buttocks I quickly learned to carry a pee bottle. After my first trip with a pee bottle, I learned to carry a much larger pee bottle. Essential winter camping equipment!
Tip: If you ever melt snow for water, start off with small quantities and add snow little by little. It's a lot easier and faster for hot water to melt snow than that single flame can, e.g. large ice cub vs small ice cubes.
@Adrian T Yes or after I've exercised extensively. Or suppose I was wasting my time, because it was worth little, trying to troll everyone in a comment section of a certain video. That would seem sad. I hope you find much better ways to spend your life friend.
hahah this is exactly what i was to post,i am from Quebec and i never seen someone snowshoeing in ankle socks. If i was dressed like that i'll die.I will take a look on the waterproof socks.
Loved the collab. The Hey Darwin it’s guys made me double take at my phone and rewind twice! Loved the video. You sound happier/refreshed and we noticed!
I've gone snow camping a couple of times, I think investing in the higher r-value sleeping pad is where it's at! On a recent trip, I used my normal 3-season pad with a foam pad underneath and I was... fine. A very memorable moment on one trip was a night hike under a full moon through snow covered evergreen trees... the stillness and the views?? Amazing. It can be totally worth it to hike in the winter - totally transforms a hike and the scenery. Cheers!
1:00 Dude PLEASE get some cross country skis. You will have SO much more fun than just snowshoeing, you'll work muscles you don't even know you have and we will all get to enjoy your entertaining videos about it. Its an excellent and fun way to get around in the winter. I just picked it up 3 winters ago and I have had a ridiculous amount of fun challenging myself with a new skill, plus you can bring so much luxurious camping gear when you pull a sled. DO IT!!!
Love the energy in your most recent videos! Feels like your really enjoying what your doing again and not just making them because people want them. Can’t wait for the next one!
I love winter backpacking and camping. I added wood stoves to my kit a couple years ago and love their functionality when it's time to melt snow for water. Give the Firebox Nano Ti a look. One of my favorites (4 oz). Quickly becoming a mainstay in my pack tear round.
Thx Darwin , ill be heading out first weekend of March to do a bit of the Goat Trail and a little bit of the Ozark Highlands trail for an over nighter...Good to see ya doing snow trips and your take on the gear for it.
I only wear trail runners in the snow now but constantly get funny looks and even comments from "pro hiking" crowd. Love the set up, especially that bag liner 👍
Just watched your movie. It was very well done. Not just another hiking film. I loved the way you presented the trail angels and trail maintainers. Thank you.
For snow camping, a hammock is a great way to go if you know you can hang. There's nothing cozier than being wrapped 360 degrees in lofty down insulation. Also, if you take a tarp with doors and pitch it low, you can pack the snow up around the edges to keep out the breeze, and it stays quite a bit warmer inside the tarp (not warm, but warmer).
I would highly reccomend cross country skiing! I went for my first time after we got all that snow (I also live in Flag) and had a blast, way more fun than I was expecting.
Not gonna lie, I am less than 2 minutes in and immensely intrigued about where this is going. Also, extremely stoked to see two of my few favorite personalities trying some stuff out. Hope you have some good tips, I am headed out Monday for a cold day hike in the Table Rock State Park. Stay safe!!!
I'm using my Altra Lone Peaks for winter hiking as well. Two pairs of wools socks and my feet stay plenty comfortable for hours on end in those shoes. Only run into problems when the temps get close to freezing and snow thawing becomes an issue. I should invest in some waterproof socks for those occasions.
Bought a pair of the Randy Sun full length socks on Amazon a few weeks back. Paired them with Injinji toe socks and my trail runners. Hiked all day in a few inches of snow and never got cold or wet! Worked surprisingly well for a lower end waterproof sock.
Hey Darwin it’s -35 degrees up here in British Columbia, so I won’t go on my day hikes without my cabin and wood burning stove being within a few miles from of me ! Love your videos, great that you are back.
This is awesome to see, because I get cold easier than most. I got an Appalachian Gear Co. hoodie and an Enlightened Equipment Torrid Apex jacket, both on your recommendation, and they are each fantastic. I recently hiked the Indian Creek start of the Colorado Trail in cold, snowy weather and they kept me warm and dry.
Nice video and interesting gear info! I've never tried snowshoeing, but I've done cross country skiing overnight trips. Two points: I've often had "problems" with a Thermarest on snow. It's really easy to get condensation on the underside and then it get damp when you roll it up and it gets worse after each night. I prefer to add a thin foam pad in stead of a thicker inflatable pad for winter use. Second point: It's really easy to get bad burns if you leave a gap between the tights/pants and the socks when it fresh snow and sunny.
Would be interesting to see how that gear would do in the Adirondacks during winter. Made me chuckle to see these "winter" conditions. My favorite winter piece I call "big puffy". It's the Western Mountaineering Snojack parka.
Randomly saw those EE pullover jackets for sale last night on their website. Seems like a good way to keep your belly warm. Great video, keep up the good work.
You have inspired me so much the last couple of years. With new gear, tips and so on. I am also looking forward to my next trip. Keep up your great work. And stay safe 🙂🤙
As far as socks, you could also go with a pair of over the calf wool socks...depending on the temps it could be too much but I have found they work wonders...especially if you like less on the rest of the leg like the tights or just a simple standard layer of pants, etc. They will keep you quite warm while active.
Tried out the Randysun waterproof socks with my trailrunners snowshoeing here in Michigan today... Worked great. Only "issue" was not having any idea how wet my shoes were until I got home. Guess I'll have a pint or two and let them dry out for tomorrow.
Always great to see another take on winter backpacking. I am in Wyoming so I tend to be a bit more old school with more bomb resistant shelter, a one season UL BD First Light tent. And I breakout my liquid fuel stove for water making and more reliable operation, in my experience, in sub 30 deg F environment. Really like layers choices you made. IF I get a post pandemic trip back to AZ CA NV in winter, like New Years as I have years past, even closer to your choices.
I do exactly the same in the winter with shoes! But I use the Lone Peak RSM/all weather versions as they're more wind resistant and darn toughs/water proof socks. I was comfortable with that hiking in -30C in Quebec last winter. Way easier on the body than boots!
I upgraded my NeoAir X-therm and X-lite for the Tensor Insulated and non-insulated versions. Basically the same in all important specs, but the Tensors are much quieter. I've kept the NeoAir versions to loan out.
As an Arctic Hiker, I was a bit sceptical at first, but I found myself saying "Yeah, that'll work" a lot of the times. Not the biggest fan of the MSR Snowshoes, but that's just a personal choice xD For your climate, and only being out a few days, the gear works fine. I wouldn't use most of it for work (Actic Nature Guide on Svalbard) (unless I'm hiking in late spring, when it's gettin warmer), but then at my temperatures, different gear is needed - that is usually 100% overkill for most people xD Stay safe out there Darwin, and say hi to my old Homestate AZ for me. Just would recommend some sun glasses, I don't know how high the risk of snow blindness is, where you're hiking, but better be safe than sorry.
Nice one Darwin, looks good mate. I’m new to the channel, have found your videos very helpful in helping me lighten my pack weight! Currently training for a 180 mile thru hike here in the U.K.! Very useful vids buddy. Thank you Ash 🏕
Hey Darwin, just LOVE your "new goofy/funny" approach to your videos! Up here in Québec (you HAVE to come join us for some incredible snowshoe hikes in our beautiful National Parks!), my essential gear are snowshoes and microspikes, but Merino Wool is a God Sent! Socks, base layer, gloves, underwear and Buff, going Merino changed my (cold Québec winter) life! Keep up the excellent work, sharing your passion and knowledge. Thanks, 🏔️ ⛺ 🥾 on!
Ya.., waterproof socks is where it's at. I've been using Sealskinz for nearly 20yrs. I think you'd be underdressed if the wind picked up., especially on the legs.
Shoeshoes! I like that word :) also: it's really interesting to see how you adapt to winter hiking! I've found that even warm leggings don't keep my thighs warm enough, so I've been wearing thin windproof pants on top.
So you called me Darwin, and then this?..... I started trying out that Randy Sun sock early this winter and already using the Darn toughs with the Olympus. Damn good choice! We've had lots of snow in the Smokies this season! Stay groovy Broth!
Good thing you added that disclaimer, because as a Canadian watching your clothing gear list, I would hope no one attempting this in our winters up here wears thermal shorts haha! I was going to ask what was your temperature like? I imagine it wasn't super cold. Like you said it looks like it melts fast when the sun comes.
Dexshell waterproof socks are great as well. Be warned, once you get water in them it's a pain to dry them. Do not, not, toast them over a fire they have to dry by hanging. Never wash them too. Also, make sure they are pulled up all the time, water can get in via the cuff. Why I only do sealskinz it dexshells, higher cuffs.
That blooper in the end. LOL! I liked the overall montage. Realy nice done, as if you walk by and notice us standing there and talk to us. Better than these one camera shot talking head vids. But I still like those too, because of the information. Thank you. I bring a Exped HL Winterlite pad in freezing conditions. Warm like a water bed.
Just for the moment, you just gave me so much hope for my winter trips with your tip regarding the double socks system. I am wearing the same shoes as you and I cant find something different for water profeness. No I will test water proof socks and im looking forward so much for it! =) Thank you! =)
I backpack year round and I don’t think I’ll ever understand the need to switch out bags or go crazy with a ton of extra gear. I have a 30 degree quilt that weighs 19 oz. It’s a WM Caribou MF long that I just cut out the zipper and stitched the foot box up a bit. If its winter, I just wear down pants, down bootlies and use and R1 with a down or synthetic vest in addition to my Torrid Apex. Plenty warm, tons of flexibility, and lighter than some massive bag and all the other clothing options. I also use an Exped SynMat 7 UL, and in winter, I add a GG thinlight. If needed, a properly sized emergency blanket sandwiched between the two pads is also lightweight insurance. I just cowboy camped for three nights in the mountains of WV, on snow, and had no issues whatsoever. This set-up saves weight and money too.
Maybe try Sandia Crest outside of Albuquerque. Tijeras Canyon Estate Trailhead to South and North Crest Trails to Placitas Tunnel Springs. Bag South Peak, Sandia Peak and North Peak. Gaia maps are fine. Good bail out points going west at Embudo, Pino, La Luz trails if it goes bad.
Protips for snow melting. You want wide pot, not tall ones. It is quite difficult to melt snow in cups or tall pots because of the quantity of the produced water and tall pots just limit amount of snow you can add simultaneously. Second one is to use "seed water" - it is just a normal water which you add first, around 2 cm of the pot depth and boil it and then add snow. If you just put snow in some cases you can burn your pot. Powder snow for example is the worst for melting it without water because it is quite dry and difficult to melt on it's own. Regarding the burner, basically anything that can support your pot in stable position is fine. Just buy correct gas mixture for colder weather.
Hey Darwin, going on y 1st winter camping trip. Concern how my camera gear would handle the cold weather... any advice on how to use your camera gear in winter conditions?
Hello Darwin its guys Lmao!! I like the looks of that enlightened equipment pullover!! Personally wasnt a fan of their first version. But this one is right up my alley! I've always like anoraks and the like. My buddy uses the same waterproof socks he likes them too. Key to gortex is just change your socks frequently if your going to wear gortex to its full potential. But wear what makes you comfortable! I personally couldnt get away with just wearing tights in the Adirondacks. Maybe if i was on the move constantly but sitting still. Gotta have some warmth and just delayer if i have too. Always good stuff Darwin!! Stay safe! Hike on!!
Out west 5 to 10 isn’t that cold. I was in Jackson hole for thanksgiving it was in the 20s and I had a fleece on totally comfortable. I couldn’t do that in the north east I’d freeze.
I thought I subscribed to Darwin, not guys, but it's all good. Nice simple setup. I've walked a bit in snow and on 1-2 ft thick ice along rivers in west PA in the past. Good fun.
Great vid as always . What Patagonia tights did you swap out from ? Have you ever tried Howies merino long johns ? Here in the U.K. I use them in snow / cold as a base layer sometimes but we don’t have the cold or the snow your getting in flagstaff .
Do you dig Backpacking in the Winter? What's one piece of Gear you won't go out into the Snow without???
👇Let Us Know Down Below!👇
dessicant like 390 packets just bone dry as all get out
I Always have a dedicated pair of wool socks just for sleeping and I throw hand warmers in them before bed. Warm feet helps keep the rest of you warm.
NO!
a small pulk or sled to haul gear, and fun for the toboggan races after hiking all day
How about two? Western Mountaineering down pants, and (currently) REI down booties, which will be replaced soon as the down is beginning to leak out at the sole seam. I think I'll try synthetic next time to deal with moisture better.
Hey Darwin, it's Guys. Made my Friday.

I just had to! 😂
Hey Chuck!
I’m glad you took your RUclips break. You can tell you had some time to recharge. You can feel the energy. Enjoying the diverse newer content.
Needed to get my head right! 😉
"Hey Darwin, it's Guys" is how my brain thinks in the cold.

I just woke up from a nap and thought I needed to go back for more.

Loved how you amped up your video with a new opening line! That sure got me a smile, laugh, and my attention.
I love winter camping. The high risk of hypothermia adds a layer of excitement
-30 C where I live right now. Idk why I’m watching this video
Cross-country skis with a pair of climbing skins. Maybe a shovel for making snow kitchens and shelters.
Lol, it’s -28c here now Canada. I’ve never seen someone snowshoeing in ankle socks. Love this channel!

Even I, in very southern canada, it was -21
1-2 degrees in peak winter and I've never seen anyone walking about the city in ankle socks here in Ireland!
Liked the bit of motion and movement before each shot.
Friday uploads are a VIBE. Thanks for the vid guys!
NO PROB!
Nice video, the snowshoe bit at the end is usually what happens to me at least afew times every trip
Darwin and Jupiter teaming up for a hiking video is like an action movie with The Rock and Chuck Norris.
😂 I don't know about that 😂
Right! 👊
Add Dixie and you have got the three muskateers!

Not sure about Amazon but here in western Washington I can usually find some running water to boil instead of melting snow. Was faster and less fuel.
I love winter backpacking and camping. I added wood stoves to my kit a couple years ago and love their functionality when it's time to melt snow for water. Give the Firebox Nano Ti a look. One of my favorites (4 oz). Quickly becoming a mainstay in my pack tear round.
I think he was referring to size of pot when melting snow, not burner/fuel type.

Waterproof socks are amazing. I have two pairs of seal skin socks and wear them in my trail runners when hiking in fresh snow.

Funny thing that you do your snowshoeing without hiking poles. Just the one situation when they come in handy...
Killed it with tht opening line!

I have a "Merino/Bamboo" combo base layer also, and that is the best shirt I have ever owned.
I can see why you needed snow shoes. That snow had to be at least up to your ankles. Definitely deep enough to post hole.

You should do a blooper video! lol. Seriously, thanks for the info, I was especially interested in how you kept your feet warm.
Oh wow... I was thinking of sewing a jacket like the new upcoming ee jacket... I'll just wait til the jacket comes out. Thanks! I'll look for it.
It's SOOO Good!
That intro! Loved it
Great video mate, interesting seeing the gear you guys use over in the states :)
Thanks for watching!
@@DarwinOnthetrail no problems mate
Hey Darwin, going on y 1st winter camping trip. Concern how my camera gear would handle the cold weather... any advice on how to use your camera gear in winter conditions?
If you live in the north where there's a lot of snow and it gets a lot colder please do wear insulated boots and insulated jacket 🤞🏼
Wow. A 20° quilt and no parka. Aaaaand trail runners. Makes me wonder if I’ve gone to heavy in the winter.
Thks Darwin....Keep on Trucking...Km
Great video, as always, thanks. The shoulder pockets on your pack look like a new addition and appear to be a useful size. What make are they?
Stay safe! Hike on!!
Darwin you mentioned the Benton MacKaye Trail... ?! Nice! When are you heading to GA? Are you organizing a meet up?
Out west 5 to 10 isn’t that cold. I was in Jackson hole for thanksgiving it was in the 20s and I had a fleece on totally comfortable. I couldn’t do that in the north east I’d freeze.
I thought I subscribed to Darwin, not guys, but it's all good. Nice simple setup. I've walked a bit in snow and on 1-2 ft thick ice along rivers in west PA in the past. Good fun.
"Hey Darwin, it's guys" has me cracking up! I had to watch it a few times to make sure my brain was working correctly.
Great vid as always . What Patagonia tights did you swap out from ? Have you ever tried Howies merino long johns ? Here in the U.K. I use them in snow / cold as a base layer sometimes but we don’t have the cold or the snow your getting in flagstaff .
Watch the other Gear List 😉
