Hi Scotty, thank you for all your awesome work you do. One question hope it gets to you. Can you direct me to a product or way I can check the abs on my 2003 Tacoma. ? Thank you.
Well it kinda already is but it's turned off through the factory ECU settings. For example on most modern VW cars if you download a program called VagCom and but the obd 2 cable you can access the ECU and turn this feature on for many things. Or you just hook up the cable when needed and do it that way. The info is all there but the manufacturers don't want you messing around and making things worse or sometimes fiddling can void warranties so best to just leave it to the dealer while under warranty.
Scotty this is why you're so successful! Instead of being like many mechanics and refusing to evolve with your craft you jump in and get after it! Like a Renaissance man of mechanics!
You are the best thing that ever happen to a guy who doesn't understand new technology Points ,dwell ,plug gaps ,fire, fuel ,generator ,alternator , once was a day I could do basic stuff now I can't even change a cigar lighter fuse with out googling it first. Thanks JB

Dear Scotty, on your previous advice I got a BlueDriver and it works great. I used it to diagnose my Focus ST when a check engine light came on. I wanted to make sure it was ok to drive it to get fixed or whether it should be towed. It was a minor problem so it was drivable. It also works on our Escape and a friends Explorer. Mahalo(thank you) Scotty.

These tools are great in the right hands. But they can also just be flat out wrong too. I had to fix my 93 Oldsmobile myself after a good local mechanic with a good reputation relied too heavily on his diagnostic computer and he did it more than once. After intermittent stall outs while driving the first diagnosis by the computer was bad ecm and/or prom, but it wasn't a clear cut reading. Changed the ecm and it seemed to work, until it didn't. Same problem. Hook up to computer again, same funky readings. "I told you to change the prom too" he says. (I didn't know they were seperate at the time). They're not easy to get anymore, but I hunted one down and changed it. No improvement. Finally the car goes to cranks but no start. Tow it over to him one more time. After hook up to diagnostic computer one more time, he's got nothing. Can't figure it out, come get your car. After research and fumbling through finding location of crank sensor, for $20 I figure it's worth a shot before I scrap the car. Jack it up to get under it and find crank sensor but I notice something. The wires between the crank sensor and coil are exposed and bare in spots. The flex conduit and coating on the wires disintegrated from a previous oil leak allowing the bare wire to touch the engine. Once I pulled the wire away from the engine, it fired right up just like always. So I had to replace the wire and conduit and I put in the new crank sensor Even though probably nothing wrong with the old one. The point is the "good, experienced mechanic" did not bother to put it up on the lift and just check some wires for shorts because his computer diagnostic tool didn't tell him anything he could use. So..... I don't go to that mechanic anymore which sucks because it isn't easy finding one you can trust.

For many years I've had a Bluetooth OBD2 reader and saved me and my friends on a few occasions. Like one time, the car(a Lexus, mind you) simply wouldn't start. It cranked ok, it started for a second, reved really high and it would shut down again. So I plugged the OBD2 reader in it, read the codes, found out that the throttle body was stuck opened. I removed the air filter box and tube and what can I see? A very small plastic from the air filter was stuck between the throttle body and the flap itself(it probably happened when I was changing the air filter). I simply removed it, carefully, not to go into the engine, and the car started right up. So thank you ELM327!

ThinkCar 1s Works! I thought I owed it to ThinkCar, to mention this, after my earlier posts. The first dongle never worked, even after the firmware and software upgrades. But, the replacement is working. It gives more info than my Scanguage 2. It has BCM, IPDM, ABS and SRS for instance. I can't get a transmission temperature, which I had hoped for; that is the Mfr fault. But, it has answered a question I had. My TPMS light stays off, except when I drive longer distances (maybe more than 30 mi.), then it stays on until I park. Found a BCM code C1709 for the RF TPMS sensor with ThinkCar 1s. ThinkCar 1s works with only one car. I've had my truck for 14 yrs and driven only 50k mi., so not a problem for me. The 1S comes with 1 yr Full Vehicle Modules Report. Subsequent years are $10, which I can live with. Bottom line, I didn't need it, but I'm glad I bought it; it's an educational thing for me, and I'm sure it will more than pay for itself.
Always enjoy your videos. have an issue for you to ponder. I started out as a mechanic back in the 70's and got away from it. You know what they say, "if you don't use it (knowledge), then you lose it. Ok so here is my issue. 2009 RAM 1500 4.7 purchased in 2013 with approx. 134,000 miles. Within the first week, after leaving a stop light, the engine (valves) were rattling like heck and blowing out so much blue smoke it was crazy. Took it back to the dealer and they drove it but it did not act up. It does not do it all the time. 6 years later and approx. 234,000 miles now on the truck and it still has this issue. When it happens, I have even mashed the gas harder trying to get it to do something other than keep blowing smoke. Truck has never really had any low end power but once going, it moves on down the road. What are your possible thoughts? Computer programming or what? have tried fuel system flushes of all kinds as well as gas treatments. Not planning on getting rid of truck as we really like the truck. No major issues but this irritating issue. Thank you for your time and thoughts.

Positive follow up. My phone shows that the dongle is still not pairing. But, it changes from red to blue (showing connection,) and I was able to get Full Vehicle and OBDII scans. It has TPMS and BCM. One scan showed no codes, and a separate scan showed low tire pressure x 4, but no tire was actually under inflated. checked there kickstarter and they are not straightforward about the device subscription based usage: the 1S is 1 year/VIN what does that even mean. is it free the first year then pay $10 a year? under FAQ they say that full diagnostic will only work on 1 car per device, so i cant use it on someone else car or will the $10 thing kick in now? FAQ contains really simple questions and nothing relates to actual frequently asked questions also standard version says 100 days/vin so it only works the first 100 days? if u go to comments they said that the only difference is the blackbox but this doesnt seem to be the case.
First 2000 early investors will get 1 year free subscription...that's on the kickstarter website. I put up $69 on kickstarter, so I'm expecting to get both the thinkcar 1 and 1s modules, plus the 1 year free subscription (I'm like the 1,500 the investor according to kickstarter. We shall see what they deliver come Sept 5.
Subscriptions are more lucrative and stable of a revenue source. Adobe went to them without a problem, despite the grumbling. Nike's now offering a subscription for kids' shoes!
Michael Ball Adobe is a greedy company and I will never pay for their services again. Glad I found the loophole out of their bullcrap 350 dollar cancellation fee.
I'm not even into cars. But I love your channel.... Every episode has useful information ... and you're just an entertaining person. Kudos for doing a great channel!
I have a bmw with the n52 engine. The bmw special software can access all sensors like variable valve timing positioning and tests, piston force sensors, the brake pumps, can switch off ignition and injection to the cylinder(s) you select, even software upgrades. It would be interesting to see what that obd tester can do.

Is it really better than Torque pro with a $20 bluetooth OBDII adapter? The one I use is quick and it scans virtually every PID in the car and gives codes in less than a minute. It also gives live data like fuel trims, timing advance, live O2 voltage reading and graphs all this data in near real time. And it's been out for years.
I’ll happily pay a subscription if it means that in 3 years from now it’ll still have the profiles of all the newer cars released since. I won’t pay anything unless it has all the custom codes for my current car, though. Still, this is absolutely amazing compared to what I’ve seen so far, so I’ll be curious to try one and see how much it can pick up. Especially if it lets me recover data from the black boxes of the wrecks I’ve bought, I’ve always been curious about that.
I'm using the plug-in "Autool 60" device that you yourself touted some time ago. It also plugs into the OBD port of your car...and it is a gauge you mount on your dashboard that allows you to see all kinds of car functions....battery voltage, oil temp, water temp, RPM....I think 14 different things you can toggle-thru...and it displays up to 4 things at once. BUT...it's also a scan tool AND code reader and code eraser.....nice piece for about $35 . The instructions however are in "Chinglish"......you may need CS help as the manual is lousy.

Caayydenn MacGyver’s replacement for the $5000 Scan tool😁
@Youll Never Know If you scan with a paper clip the data goes to your desk stapler or letter opener.
@Youll Never Know lol it's a simple enough car that you don't really need live data to know what's wrong with it
When my cat hears Scotty's voice he comes and sits on me and watches. I think he will be a mechanic.

What's better, the bluedriver or this new ThinkCar? Do you still recommend buying it
Always enjoy your videos. have an issue for you to ponder.
Finally someone undercut those extremely overpriced scan tools.
I love Scotty. He is like a real life super hero. The money I have saved, the tricks I have avoided from the auto shop and the wisdom I have learned are the reason my car works right now.
Before Scotty:
$5,000 of $10,000 goal reached.
After Scotty:
$50,000 of $10,000 goal and counting...
I think Scotty deserves some equity in this company!
Ha! The MyThinkCar guys know what side their bread will be buttered on: already a HUGE link on their homepage to this video. Even Scotty's cat thinks this product has promise: he came out of hiding to upstage Scotty early in the vid!!
Nice like caraid delivered it before smartphones, way better with a laptop and a powerful network connection the 90€ option was nice. I still bought the one manufacturer option for more and enjoyed it on our Mercedes cars. Does all sorts of diagnosis things, even break service on a new c class w205 and tpms relearn
Scotty: This is really great! Looks like you can isolate to the correct malfunction fast! No flailing around like we used to do in the old days. This technology come from the new F-35 fighter plane that looks at thousands of items in real time. Repairs are straightforward and fast, thus getting the jet back into service in about a tenth of the time it used to take for past generations of fighter planes. Thanks for posting this one.
I owned a 1985 sedan deville and a 1986 eldorado both had on-board diagnostics, not the most complete but still helpful. Progress???

OBD2 Canbus Scanners are cheap and flooding the market, the $6 Mini Elm 327 works ok along with Torque
You really need a Good Quality OBD2 Scanner and another for those proprietary models
What can it do
Bought one that works on wifi and one blue tooth. Got them off ebay 5 yrs ago. The software is the problem, either it dosent work, they charge for it or it does not offer the codes "in that version" hopefully someone will come out with some good software , maybe this is the one

Torque app has been out for several years and does most of this.
Our 1971 Chevy c5 Truck sat unused for 2 years. It was such a relief to start it yesterday - hook up the battery, pour some gas into the carburetor, and turn the key- (there’s something said for simplicity!)
Find yourself a car that is the easiest and cheapest to repair and maintain and if some goes wrong a friend and RUclips's like Scotty are always there to help with repairs that you can do yourself. The money that you will save in the long run by not owning today's impossible do yourself repairs cars will more than paid for you to rent whatever car you like for long/out of town trips. I did this myself ten years ago when I purchase a 1998 Ford Explorer Sport 2WD 6 Cylinders with 100.000 miles on it and now it has 250.000 miles on the odometer and It has never let me down.

@@Piznick64 yup! I blew up my old ProScan OBD2 adapter while playing around with connecting to a 1993 Chevy ODB1 car. The I damaged the ELM327 chip and it will cost $29 for the new chip. I figured for $10 more I can get a way more advanced option to the old technology.
You're right, it doesn't work so far. A lot of users complained on the app.
And since today is mechanic friday, I'm giving away a new Honda Civic
And a tuxedo cat to boot!
All this came after multiple new updates to software, firmware, bluetooth, etc. on Oct 2nd. Promising, but not quite there. I feel pretty good, though, that the bugs will get worked out.
Thanks for the heads up Scotty
Scotty looks like he's been enjoying some chocolate
His wife gave him leftover chocolate cake for lunch.

Thanks Scotty. Honest mechanics seem to be a dying breed. They don't have to RIP off people.
Scotty rockin the s10 now
You should point out this only works properly on North American VIN numbered cars. You have viewers worldwide.
Well Scotty I think you just singlehandedly boosted their Kickstarter from 8 to NINETEEN K.
checked there kickstarter and they are not straightforward about the device subscription based usage:
the 1S is 1 year/VIN what does that even mean. is it free the first year then pay $10 a year?
under FAQ they say that full diagnostic will only work on 1 car per device, so i cant use it on someone else car or will the $10 thing kick in now?
FAQ contains really simple questions and nothing relates to actual frequently asked questions
also standard version says 100 days/vin so it only works the first 100 days? if u go to comments they said that the only difference is the blackbox but this doesnt seem to be the case.
Thanks Scotty and keep on trucking
Dealers are not going to be happy with this thing. Gracias Señor Scotty.
Sounds great but it's not quite ready yet, so I'll keep rocking with the blueDriver for now.
Thinkcar requires an annual subscription, I would rather pay more but pay once.

Question could I use this when shopping for a used car. Pop this in and see what if any issues with car.

Take it for a test drive and accidentally slip it in and take a peek behind the curtain.
I wish I could find a scotty in my neck of the woods.
Nextdoor tends to give reliable references from your neighbors.
I'm not seeing it. They just added social media to a scan tool. Why would I pay extra for that?
*pay a fraction
It’s only 59$..
Same thing as a OBD11 for my Audi I love that thing bang for the buck for sure .
I just now placed my order for one of these on their Kickstarter page. Thanks Scotty!
Scotty, how much did you pay for your $5,000 scan tool?
Zero
So...now we can ALL send our info to you!..GREAT!!!
Now I see why Scotty is so fired up. He just went worldwide courtesy of Thinkcar. 😎
Pretty cool, but I think I will wait till it is out of kickstart before I think about getting one of these.

Scotty’s always gotta flex his $5,000 scan tool 😎😏
I think I will wait until 10 other companies put out carbon copies of this that don't require a subscription
Torque app with a bluetooth OBDII adapter. Works great. THIS is the carbon copy.
@@hobohacker258 Pretty sure Torque doesn't check body codes.

@@simplytired2109 but the root idear of swarm lofgic or cloud service came from autoaid, you can even hire a pro mechanic who calls back and does deep analyses... Caveat? Need laptop and high speed internet
Now if we had that in the medical field, we could get a good diagnosis on our own.
Love that he left the cat walking across the front yard in the video (0:45).
"As far as I can tell, it's $59." Now, that's confidence you can trust.
NO!!! - I will not buy something just to pay a subscription fee to use what I already own.
Same as getting married, you pay for it .. And still pay every month and wait till you get divorced and have kids .. You really pay for it monthly
@@michaelc9128 dam bro😂😂😂😭
Michael C preach
