What’s hilarious is that Washington was almost called Columbia after the Columbia river, but the name was rejected in fear that it would be confused with the District of Columbia. So they called it Washington.

Constantinople, 1054 Nope, just pointing out how wildly off he was, and deserving of mockery. I got the point that he didn’t know anything, and you missed the point about my mocking him.
yeah, but he was famous for leading the civil rights movement in/from Alabama. At least, that's how this Canadian first learned about him, and even though I know he was born in Georgia, I still associate him more with Alabama.
He was also the paster at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama from 1954-1960 which is where he organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The church was actually renamed Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church in the early 1970s (I believe 1974 or 1973?) in memory of him. But yeah while he is probably most associated with Alabama for the work he did with Civil Rights he actually was born in Georgia and died in Tennessee.
The Washington vs Washington DC thing gets even weirder when you realize that Washington State was originally called the Columbia territory, and DC got the name “Washington” to avoid confusion between the two.
Washington territory wanted to be called Columbia after the Columbia river, but was denied so as to not confuse with DC (District of Columbia), so the territory was named Washington. It was afterwards that DC got Washington added on to it.
The big northwestern states are not "de-populated." They were never populated, in the first place. Yeah, I am surprised people outside the country know about the electoral college map, and that the minimum number of votes a state gets is 3, while some get more based upon their population. Good upon you! BTW, Washington is the most common place name in the country. There are towns, counties, and streets called Washington all over the place. Father of our country, and all that.

I've noticed that in Europe, the US President for whom streets or other edifices are most frequently named over the past century is Woodrow Wilson.
Montana isn't really the Northwest. The Northwest is really just Washington and Oregon. A lot of people include Idaho and British Columbia in Canada. But Montana and Wyoming are very rarely considered Northwest. Very much in the same way Northern California could be considered NW. But just not really.
Someone in another comment brought up how Indiana was the capital of TV factories but nowadays they're all in Asia. Manufacturing jobs really have slipped away from the Midwest.
A friend of mine in Wales🏴 actually said it best that, in regards to military might and overall mentality, it could be said that the U.S.🇺🇸 is the son closest to the father🇬🇧. Well, we got the Upper Peninsula because of the Toledo Strip War when those slimy Ohioans stole land from the Michigan Territory. When it came time for the Michigan Territory to become a state, the thieving Ohioans struck and claimed some of OUR land. The Governor of the Michigan Territory raised the Glorious Michigan Militia to defend our boarders. Each of our brave lads was easily a match for any ten members of that disorganized bandit gang of scum known as the Ohio Militia. The two forces started moving towards each other and met at the Maumee River. A great battle ensued and due to the superior nature of the Michigan Militia over the degenerates in the Ohio Militia, the Michigan forces suffered no casualties. Before the Michigan Militia could press their advantage, the US Army arrived and put an end to the war. Through various underhanded and dishonorable political shenanigans (I would not be surprised if bribery and extortion was involved as Ohioans by their very nature really are that low) Ohio was awarded the Toledo Strip. In compensation the Upper Peninsula was made a part of Michigan.

As a New Yorker myself, I can tell you that New York took some land from Vermont. New York is like 95% farmland. New York is actually 90% republican in terms of counties, population wise though it’s mostly Democrat. It’s the only state which has towns named Rome and Carthage next to each other. Other towns nearby are named Mexico, Poland, and Denmark. And if you say you’re from New York people immediately assume you’re from either NYC, Buffalo, or Syracuse. Also Kansas has a lot of history pre-civil war. It was a place of a lot of violence and conflict due to when it was becoming a state, congress gave it a choice to become either a slave state or free state. Northerners and slave owners poured into the state to try and flip the vote in their own favor to get more voting power over the other in congress. This time period of violence and fighting was known as Bleeding Kansas. In the end tho, Kansas became a free state. As soon as Kansas entered the US as a new state, South Carolina got salty and fed up with northerners seemingly getting preference from the us government that South Carolina left the union, followed by the other southern states which formed the confederation of states of America, which sparked the civil war..
If you say you’re from New York people will automatically assume NYC. You’d have to specify that you’re from upstate New York for them to think you’re from Buffalo or Syracuse
10:14 - I believed that 'up-state' New York is north of I-88. Later, I learned that to New York City people, up-state is anywhere north of Westchester and Rockland counties.
He also missed by far the most important fact, to a Brit, about Pennsylvania. Philadelphia was the first capitol of the rebellious colonies, that eventually became the USA. "Philadelphia mostly famous for tv shows" LOL... that's where the declaration of Independence was signed and was the seat of the continental congress until Washington DC was built...
You keep saying “depopulated” which suggests the states were once populated, and then became depopulated. For the most part, the states you mention as depopulated are actually sparsely populated, and always have been.
Some of them actually are depopulated. North Dakota had a lower population in 2010 than it did in 1930. But, that's turned around with the oil boom. And it will probably turn around again with the inevitable oil bust, whenever that happens.
Ok, this is a really late comment, but I just have a couple things to say: 1. New Jersey is actually well known for having no sales tax on clothing. 2. If you ever decide to actually spend some time in Connecticut, go to New Haven and get yourself some pizza. Connecticut used to get a lot of Italian immigrants, so the pizza there is really good.

The Washington vs Washington DC thing gets even weirder when you realize that Washington State was originally called the Columbia territory, and DC got the name “Washington” to avoid confusion between the two.

I got annoyed with how he pronounced Michigan with the Mi(cht)igan and not Mi(sh)igan

Don’t forget about the absolute giga-chad Kansas native by the name of John Brown. May his soul go marching on forevermore.
Bruh, give it back!
If you say you’re from New York people will automatically assume NYC. You’d have to specify that you’re from upstate New York for them to think you’re from Buffalo or Syracuse

Yes
As a Californian I can say it’s just every californian outside of the cities haha
Washington is also a very liberal state

i’ve got a question from one arkansan to another. does everybody else hate jonesboro? is that a thing?
I do have to say you have a very nice travel bureau on US 71 at the state line. I rode US 71 from Sioux Rapids Iowa to Texarkana and stopped there for a break on my way into the state.
How could he not know Johnny Cash was from Arkansas? Maybe he just doesn't like music.
@@jefpeanutbutter3094 Nah. I just hate Harrison... what with the "White Rights" thing they like to promote. I live in Conway, so pretty big for Arkansas, pretty small for USA. Three colleges in one city!
I’m from Russia, but my favourite state is Utah 🇺🇸 because of the gun inventor named John Browning. He created the 50 BMG, the 1911 pistol and the 1897 trench gun and my favourite the M2 50 Cal machine gun.
Well, I guess...that's something to be proud of...
Personally, as a (transplanted) Utahn, my favourite thing about the state is the nature. The majestic mountains, the harsh scrubland deserts, the dramatic and weird rock formations, the awesome dinosaur/prehistoric creature fossils and the forests and canyons. But that's just me. :)
Дмитрий Лебедев so what are you into? Jk don’t shoot me. 😆
Damn...are you sure you're not American?
Scott Meriwether No, I’m Russian sir. When I was in the Soviet military, fighting in Afghanistan, I was shot across the chest 4 times. I got medically discharged, a few years later the Soviet Union ended. I was disappointed the country I had fought for, had ended. In 1992 I lived in the USA, specifically Florida. I missed my homeland, and in 1996 I returned to Russia where I remain today. Being in the service gave me great interest in firearms, I later cam across the works of John browning. And later read, about his home state Utah. Have a good day. :)
@@erichkaufmann5284 what is your opinion of the society union now?

Classic tax evasion

@@VideoSaySo he did say this video was just all about his impressions of each state. He never said this is about history and facts of each state.
Realistically, the rest of the world doesn’t care about American History courses. I’m sure if you ask a random person from across the pond when the Dust Bowl happened, or when were all the civil rights marches, or when the US declared independence; I’m sure they wouldn’t be able to tell you. Unfortunately, I’m sure some Americans cannot answer those questions either.
