    A strange anomaly is that the Royal National Lifeboat Institution operates from bases in the Republic of Ireland. Always a great service no matter where they launch from. How many sailors in ships large and small who are in distress let out a cheer when the lifeboat hoves into view because they know just how good these guys are.

      Even though Ireland has been a republic for quite a while, there are still quite a few clubs and societies that have royal in their name eg The Royal Cork Yacht Club.

      If I was in Ireland, I wouldn't complain about them as they are going out into conditions where others are trying to get in.

    Outstanding seamanship required in these conditions. And above all respect for the power of the sea. All of them have my utmost admiration for saving lives sometimes costing their own. Thankfully those events are rare.

    I'm not an expert but it would take a heck of a lot. She's a Severn class by the look of it. They can self right if they capsize, and in clear water with no rocks around there is very little that would really damage it significantly. If it were bashed up against a rocky outcrop then that could cause it to become holed and sink but she has a reinforced hull that should prevent that sort of thing too.

    I'm a kayaker that regularly goes out fishing on my yak but consider a 20mph wind forecast as a no way I'm going out to sea time! What the hell was a kayaker doing out in swells like this, even if they were in a sheltered bay, the wind forecast must have been high surely.

      Can you imagine what would happen if they relied on the govt then all funding was withdrawn because the govt sees fit to no longer fund them.
      Govt must never be allowed to have anything to do with the RNLI.
      They would destroy them.

      Michele, agree, the govt would have them respond in a 10' inflatable. We had an idiot Prime Minister who shut down at least 1 CG station.Fortunately his predecessor reversed the decision a year o r so later.

    These brave people really deserve our support, I've been giving ever since i was old enough to earn and i have left a substantial portion of my estate to them, that was until now. I will never support them again. I'm sorry but it's the RNLI not the RILI, National not International. Stop empire building.
    I expect my donations to support the British not people in Africa and elsewhere, if you have so much money, help those that need it in the UK those that work tirelessly on our behalf, not those abroad. Giving Burkini's to those in Africa makes a mockery of those brave soles that regullarly risk and to those that have given their lives to save those in the UK seas. For example Penlee and others. Its a bloody disgrace

      rnli.org/support-us/how-your-support-helps/where-your-money-goes
      A whole 2% goes international and it's to measures to prevent drowning. Surely that's a good thing? We have some of the most advanced technology for saving lives at sea, surely being able to pass some of that knowledge on to other countries so they can build up their ability to save lives is a good thing? And for a mere 2%!? Buttons!

    That's not a Force 10 - Where is the spume? Check the Beaufort scale descriptions. Looks like a Force 8 at most to me. (Most of the crashing about is from the boat driving into the wind at speed.) Unless they are in very sheltered waters and the F10 was outwith that area.

    • @markturner4219
      @markturner4219 4 года назад +2

      They are in a relatively sheltered area sheltered area. The entrance to Plymouth is very well protected and for the run up to Burgh Island they would have had significant shelter from the curve of the bay and headlands. Burgh Island is close inshore (only an island at high tide) and an all year round haunt of the 1930's glitterati being a second home of Agatha Christie and counting the likes of Noel Coward and and Edward and Mrs Simpson among regular guests. From the description they turned back before even getting there as the canoeist checked in safe. I am quite sure the RNLI doesn't need to exagerate so one can trust their claim as to the wind force.
