  • File this under plays you may never see again. Relief pitcher Daniel Camarena, called back up on July 8, 2021, took on Max Scherzer with the bases loaded and went 416 feet deep to right field for a stunning grand slam and his first career hit. Hear from his older brother Louie (3:52) and mother Consuelo as the San Diego County native, born in Bonita and a former Cathedral Catholic Don, comes through for his hometown team.

So surreal, awesome and unexpected! You couldn't script this! Given Camarena's long struggle to make it to the show, persevering after his father passed away to arrive at this moment of hitting a grand slam for his first MLB hit in his home town in front of his entire family with two strikes against arguably one of the best pitchers in MLB, and inspiring the Padres to overcome an 8-0 deficit, it was just so special and incredible to see and hear it live at Petco ! And that pitch by Scherzer wasn't even a strike! Best baseball moment I've ever witnessed! Reminds me of Jim Morris (portrayed by Dennis Quaid in "The Rookie"), only better... Someone should make an inspiring movie about Camarena's life!

What's most mind blowing about this, IMO, is that Scherzer was taking the at bat seriously. This wasn't James Shields serving up a middle/middle meatball to Bartolo Colon, this was Max Scherzer pitching to Camarena like he was a threat at the plate.
That was a *good pitch*, 96, down and in, not even a strike. And Camarena didn't just hit it out, he CRUSHED it.

As a lifetime fan of baseball and the Phillies fan who grew up loving the 1993 team. I would just like to thank your entire organization for letting the players be themselves and making baseball fun again!!!

I'm into watching this drama these days.
    It's “SD Fadres”
Today's hero is Camarena, who drove everyone crazy at 1:19
    It’s amazing
