    It is because of you that I invested in a dehydrator and I'm loving it! We go to a food pantry at least once a month and there's always lots and lots of vegetables and fruit. We wouldn't get very much because we couldn't eat that much before it went bad. The food bank workers were always encouraging us to take more but there's no way we could use it all. But now I have a dehydrator I can dry all the extra to have this coming winter. I also made a super greens powder per your suggestions which our sons will use in their smoothies. I also made beef jerky, celery powder, tomato powder, apple rings, dried strawberries, and dried summer squash. Next will be watermelon jerky. Thank you so much for all of your information.

    I am saving for a cosori! I want one so badly. I have none. I had a dehydrator a cheapish old one but I have it to my son because he did not have one and my son's both grow big gardens, fish and one hunts, the other does not have the heart to kill a animal.😀 So the son that doesn't hunt bought a nice one. The other son that hunts has 4 kids so it's harder for him. So I gave him mine. Now I am saving for a dehydrator. Hopefully I find a real good sale.

    Thank you for your in kitchen, real time explanations. I always find it much easier to follow the examples of people rather than learn from basic instructions. I don't have much experience and your videos are perfect. I also think my times vary because I live in a mid-high humidity area, also it might also depend on you altitude. I hope you have a great day!

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  Год назад

      Altitude really doesn't affect drying times (but it does for canning). It's humidity that's the issue - no matter what altitude you are at.

      Powders are best for short-term as they begin to degrade faster than their whole-food counterparts. They clump, are exposed to more heat/light/moisture, and so are better stored whole and powdered as needed for 6-9 months.

      I wouldn't use them for storage, no. Even hard cheese can begin to turn rancid over time because of the fat content. You can use the cheese in a can instead of real cheese if you want storage.

      Not really - most frozen food are frozen as soon as they are picked vs the things sitting there for a while in a grocery store waiting for someone to buy (and had been shipped across the country). Frozen is really convenient if you're trying to stock up quickly!

    Thank you for all the information you freely share with us on RUclips. I really appreciate you and your channel!
    I have a question...
    I have dehydrated yellow squash in thin slices on my mandolin... 131 for almost 48 hours... The larger slices that have more seeds are papery but don't snap in half. The only ones that snap in half are the smaller pieces. All the larger ones bend like paper but seem completely dry.
    Are they done? I'm saving for winter usage in soups. I do live in a very humid environment so I want to be sure they're completely done ❤

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  2 года назад

      Did you allow them to cool before testing? They should break easily. I can't imagine them not being one in 48 hrs, but th seed center may change the texture if they are extremely large squash.

    • @yardenrice

      @@ThePurposefulPantry yes ma'am, I allowed to cool before testing... I can tear them apart, they just bend like paper and do not "snap"

      I'm sure you can - but I've never done it, so I don't know how it will taste (too smokey from how concentrated it gets?)

    Thanks for doing this Darcy for us newbies. You happen to hit on my favorite vegetable combo to use. How well does it do to just refreshing and or rehydrate and then boil up like the regular vegetable bag. I know you said most did better in a casserole or something is that texture looks all of the above? The other one I like to use is a mixed vegetable combo with lima beans but I do like to use that in vegetable soup primarily I was wondering it just looks like the lima beans would take longer than the rest of the vegetables is that true or would any of those vegetables anything to harm the drying time I can get them all separately. Just closed on the house yesterday need to be out by the 19th of September so I figure before we get settled and before things start happening it will be about Christmas time I will be dehydrating and plan to do it and teach my granddaughters while I'm learning. Off on a New journey at 68 should be an interesting one

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  2 года назад +2

      It will be a personal preference about if you like it rehydrated and cooked -you'll have to try it out. The beans won't take that much longer - just dry everything together - save the separating time - you can't over dry. Congrats!

    Thank you for your videos! I received the 6 tray Cosori for Christmas and I'm excited to get started. When checking food before the time is up, do you have to press stop or can you just open the door to check consistency?

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  6 месяцев назад +1

      I just open the door. It gives you a few moments, but may reset after a time. I don't use the timer feature anyway - so it never bothers me. You can just glance before you open and reset the time if you need it or use a kitchen timer that will keep going. Dry things until they are dry - not by the timer ;)

    Our electric bill just more than doubled and so did the water bill. I have shut down all dehydrating for the summer. I guess I will set the AC at 80 now. This inflation is beginning to make us look like Venezuela. All meat has more than doubled. I am canning everything in my freezer and shutting it down, too. We seniors are getting hit so hard it’s very frightening. I hate to even think of what it will be like come winter. They aren’t even sending out income tax refunds - money they owe us. They say they will pay in October. Huh.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  2 года назад +3

      But collectively - higher air, more inside time when it's hot can run up energy costs and the dehydrator just adds to it, especially if you are in a small space and the heat from it adds to the immediate area heat you are in. I'm sorry @ocalabrew that you're in that position - I understand.

      You can dehydrate it - but optimal storage will be in the freezer so as not to risk rancidity in the mats from the fats turning. I prefer to invest in freeze dried for proteins to avert that issue.

      Watch my channel for 'recipes' and yes, use some parchment on the rack to help stop sticking. You can use the rack as is, but parchment will help (I prefer dehydrating mesh, but use the parchment until you get further along). Also find more ways to use it here: www.thepurposefulpantry.com/

    Not all frozen vegetables are blanched. Azure Standard says it fresh freezes. So those you would have to blanch? I am having trouble getting organic, precut, frozen celery btw. Either its super popular or there is a shortage?

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  2 года назад

      I've never seen frozen organic celery - so I'm not sure if you'll have to go to places like Whole Foods, etc. to get them. But I'm sure it's market driven. I'm not sure what Azure does to its foods before it freezes - not ALL veg need to be blanched before freezing, but most commercial companies blanch the ones that need it beforehand. I'm not at all familiar with Azure's processes for frozen foods.

    Hello! This is so helpful! I hope you see my comment because I have a few questions. I am making dehydrated meals for a backpacking trip in one month. I don't have a vacuum sealer. I was planning on storing them in airtight glass jars for about 4 weeks, and then a few days before my trip, transferring to zip lock bags and the meals will be eaten within the week. Would that work or is that not a good method? I can also store things in the freezer. Thank you so much!

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  2 года назад +1

      You don't need a vacuum sealer, but you may want to invest in mylar bags if you plan on continuing the journey. But yes, you can use zipper top bags (use double bagged freezer varieties) for your trip. You can store in the freezer, but there's no need to unless it contains proteins/fats.

I was wondering about the switching from one can to another, I’ve never seen anyone can without a sealer. I personally have a little $30 handheld sealer and it works great sealing Mylar bags to freeze.
      Has anyone here ever owned a Foodsaver, or another vacuum sealer ? I here that Foodsaver machines can be problematic, but they do have a 5 year warranty…… which food probably won’t exist in 5 years but a couple years would suffice. Any advice on that ……. ?

    Crazy question, can you use the oven liners made in silicone as the fruit leather sheets if you cut them down? I realize they will not have the edges. Thank you!

      You don't need to do anything more than hot soapy water or a run in the dishwasher. It isn't an issue like canning unless you don't bother to fully dry and then vacuum seal/use O2 absorbers, which aren't needed anyway.
