Darkstalker was... *chef's kiss* THE best Wings of Fire book. From the first to last word, every single thing in the book was absolutely perfect. It was dark, well written, and had some SERIOUSLY entertaining plots. I knew from the very start that it would get the highest rank!

  • @oliviadavis3638

I know why people hate Starflight, and its a pretty brutal reason. (spoiler alert for a few of the books)(it's not huge or anything but might as well put it out there)
Because he's not special. He has no super cool powers or anything special about him, which is what people like. I mean, Clay has fire proof scales, Tsunami's a princess, Glory is a queen of TWO tribes, Sunny is also a princess and her dad is an animus, Moonwatcher can read minds and see the future, Winter is a prince, Peril is a firescales, Turtle is an animus AND a prince, Qibli's brain is basically a supernatural power of its own, Blue is a flamesilk, Cricket is immune to mind control, Sundew has the most advanced leafspeak in her entire tribe, Snowfall is a queen, and Luna is also a flamesilk. Anyone else see a pattern? Starflight is just your ordinary dragon, no animus powers, no mind-reading, no future seeing, not royalty, he's blind actually. Starflight represents us, the ordinary people, who wish we were more than we are. We dislike that, that we aren't all crazy-powerful and awesome and Starflight is in the same situation, and so we dislike Starflight. The thing we should learn from this is that ordinary people, (or dragons) can still do great things. You don't need to be a queen or an animus or a firescales to be powerful and world changing, Starflight organized a plan for his tribe to survive and live in a new place and get there peacefully in like five seconds, and he didn't use magic or a physical ability like firescales to threaten everyone into agreeing. Starflight might not be on a Qibli-level of smartness, but I would say he's still pretty smart. Just like all of us. Like Starflight, we all have our strengths and our weaknesses, and instead of disliking that, we should respect it.

Dragonslayer is my favorite book in the series and one of my favorite books of all time. Tui changes her writing voice throughout to reflect the time passing in the world (making the third person narration sound juvenile when the characters are young, and making it more sophisticated as the pay grow older). That is so incredible and complex that I legitimately don’t know how she did it. And of course I adore Wren, she’s my second favorite fictional character of all time. She’s just so awesome :)

How was book 1 ranked so low??
It introduces Peril, one of the most morally questionable, don't approach this topic with a 10 foot stick, *scary* characters. Every scene she is in is just... yiiiieeee.
Using the trope "captured and stuck in what seems to be a hopeless scenario" which I just have an unhealthy level of morbid fascination with...
That and my morbid fascination with Peril in general.
Just... morbid fascination with this book.
Though I will agree the first part is a little slow.
And that slow Dragonets song scene caught me totally off guard on my recent re-read. One of the rare moments that got me to shed a tear...
Really set a pretty dark tone when you think about it, and part of why Darkstalker is so loved by this fan base.
If you liked book 1's... trauma? Then you'd love Darkstalkers...
OK I need a better word for that. Nothing about watching someone forcibly rip their guts out should be anywhere near the word love, but that scene is the *definition* of morbid and the power it holds over the reader is... astonishing.
I too just sat around and ppaced a lot questioning life after finishing Darkstalker, and I doubt we're alone.

Darkstalker was LIFE-CHANGING. I’m still so profoundly affected by that book. I’ve recommended it to everyone I know, including people who don’t typically read. It touched such a deep level of interpersonal (interdragonal??) relationships and politics that it stood up to every test of genre trope subversion. Tui accomplished more character development in that comparatively short book than maaany authors have in long, drawn-out series. You really develop a relationship with all of them and all have layers upon layers of faults and virtues. The love story was among the most tragic I’ve come across, which is saying something. It will stay with me forever. Anyway, couldn’t agree more regarding books 4 and 14! My daughter didn’t care for them but I really enjoyed them. ❤️ Dragonslayer I thoroughly enjoyed-it was fascinating tying known events into different perspectives, plus Sweetface/Cereus. 🤣 loved her. ❤️ And I’m telling you-that poor goof Scarlet rejected at snack time in Clay’s book was Mushroom. 🤣

8:31 I'll be honest with you all; I don't mind the Humans in WOF. I understand that the humans in Dragonslayer were bland and I will give credit to that but I loved it because to me, on a different level of thinking, Tui nailed the thoughts about us, living in a dragon world. I can give out a long, philosophical speech and try to convince you guys to give the scavengers a second chance, but I'm not going to do that. One reason I liked this book is how Tui changed the game via humanity. To me, it's nice to see humans get some nice book treatment, but I hope Tui doesn't forget what this series is about: Dragons. The whole theme I can see about Dragonslayer is the ignorance of all races and other species, social corruption, and falsehood, and living in a world where man must fight against one thing or another: Survival against Dragons or man itself. And I think the best way we can see those themes is Sky and Wren.
Why am I telling you this? I believe that we will get an Arc 4 that will involve humans and dragons, one I believe in which Sky will face a great dilemma about his morals. Will Sky stay loyal to his human family and play the villain to his kind, regardless of what fate has done? Or will he rejoin thee Dragon races to prove he is a dragon? To me, Tui is setting the stage and Sky is going to witness the anthem of a revival. That's my ted talk, sorry for boring y'all.
On a side note, Jade Mountain Archives, the way I feel about Sky can be best described by how you feel about Qibli 🤣. Expect me to go gaga about Sky whenever I comment on your vids. Love your work.

I was honestly surprised that Darkness of Dragons was ranked so high? I thought there were a lot more people that disliked this book but I guess those opinions have fizzled out. In my opinion though, DoD is one of the more messier WoF books. Tui wanted to do so much that it ends up making parts of the book extremely disconnected, and the ending has a lot to be desired. The first half with the Vulture and Onyx plot comes out of left field, and doesn’t really give you a satisfying conclusion, Vulture is just dropped entirely and never heard from again in the series, and Onyx had a lot of potential, but wasn’t used properly. Winter’s character also just gets so much worse. He’s under a spell for the first part so it’s understandable why he acts the way he does, but it’s shown that he’s STILL NOT OVER MOON for some reason, which just forces more love triangle stuff which nobody likes, and then completely regresses in his character arc when he chooses to fight for the Icewings. Then he’s just not told about Darkstalker??? Tui’s the author, so she was the person who decided that Winter shouldn’t be there for Darkstalker’s defeat (and by extension Peril and Turtle for some reason), and I just can’t understand why???? But he doesn’t know, and then Kinkajou basically tells him “we’re not gonna tell you because you’re an asshole”, so yeah, nice healthy friendship there no red flags at all. Then the Peacemaker stuff is just weird. It’s more of a reward for Foeslayer and not a punishment for Darkstalker, it punishes him but it doesn’t condemn him for his actions in a satisfying way. Rest of the book is good though. It’s not my favourite but it’s a good read. If this were my list I’d put it in B tier tbh (not the bottom though, cause there’s some books that I just outright hate).

I read Darkstalker right before Book ten as a kind of break from the main story and I could not have done it more perfectly on time. On the last page there was a Post Epilogue and I quote:
"Centuries later, as the dragon planet spun through space, a comet passed by, close enough to shine like a fourth moon in Phyrrhia's sky.
Close enough to change the tides and shake the continents.
As earthquakes rumbled through the ground long-buried rocks shifted that had been in place for thousands of years.
Deep underground, in the darkness, copper wires snapped.
    *And a dragon awoke...*
That is the definition of suspense, setting up and straight up good writing. It built up suspense for the remainder of Arc two for anyone who read Darkstalker before it. It forshadows the return of Darkstalker. And the discription is perfect. Get Tui an award for this!

Darkstalker was just amazing it’s most favorite wings of fire book and nothing I would change about it the characters it’s just written perfectly. Clearisght is very amazing and interesting to read about, and especially about her strong foresight powers. Her powers seem to stress her a bit sense she wants to make whatever vision, she got got right or either perfectly and in this scene she is talking about her soulmate. When her and Darkstalker finally met they have a joyful talk, and start already talking about there future together, saying they would make it come true until ClearSight Sees the horrible visions dark would do,but tried not think about it as much but it still bother, and worried her. When Dark had made a scroll just for clearsight to see she didn’t know to feel about, but thought it could work and at least trusted him so maybe he wouldn’t lose his soul. When she became the Queens top Seeger she worried more about her Beloved because of the queens intentions, for the ice wings and didn’t need him to lose his soul more. When he tried to convince Fathom to use his power ClearSight understood why, Fathom didn’t sense she knew what the Seawing been through because of her visions. When she say Dark becoming more corrupted by his magic she never ever thought her beloved would give her an,earring to prevent her from seeing the bad visions which should found out,and probably hurt by that. When it came time to the end of the book had to make a hard decision to try and keep saving dark, but also there happy future together or the safety of the world. When she finally put the bracelet on him she felt so hurt that she had to betray her beloved , but knew that’s what she had to do. ClearSight is just a Character you feel kinda sorry for having to do a lot and even betray her beloved but also having to help the world. Fathom okay you can only feel just sorry, and feel for this sea wing after everything he went through in this book. I mean he had to find out he was a animus something he knew his uncles was, and knowing they lose there souls. Having to find out the story about how his uncle become an animus in a very disturbing way, and then having to watch his family get murder by his own uncle. Then having to kill his uncle and almost indigo his best friend, and having to lie about he really killed him to also be treated differently by most of the sea wings. I bet that was hard for him so that’s when he swore he wouldn’t use his powers ever he feared her would become like his uncle. The worse thing for him was when Pearl told him to stay away from indigo. I bet that was tough and hard for him cause he loved indigo Dearly, and missed the conversation they had. But he had to because he kept a promise to pearl to not go near her cause pearl was afraid if they had dragonets that the animus gene, could be passed on, and nothing happening like this to the seawings again. When he Mets Dark and Clear he seems pretty alright with them when finding out Dark also has animus magic her fears for his friend not using it to much, and becoming like his uncle. When he found out that indigo was gone he felt sadden by the fact of it but still had Dark and Clear with him. Even when dark try to convince him to use his magic her still feared for the worst about what could happen to him and his Soul. When he had heard Dark was going mad,and needed something to keep him at bay and the safety of the world he ended up enchanting a bracelet with his magic after a while. He probably felt upset that he had to betray his friend but only did it for the safety of the world, but in the end he at least got to spend his time with indigo and there dragonets. Fathom is very interesting to read about cause he goes through so much, but still gets a happy end and not becoming like his uncle or his Friend Darkstalker.
Darkstalker the dragon himself the most powerful dragon the world would know. When reading about it him he seems to have not the best life. Having to Hear his parents arguing every single day, having to help and comfort his sister, and also trying to help clear sight stay away from the bad visions she had. Darkstalker and Arctic never got along he never liked his father yes,but he didn’t want you be like him he thought Arctic soul was already gone enough. He always thought his dad was the problem and why there family could never be happy. Darkstalker had also tried to help Clear with her visions and telling her that they would get there happy future together, and she didn’t have to worry. When she kept seeing them he kept trying to Manipulate her to think other things, but instead enchanted her an earring so she didn’t have to stress or be so worried about his soul. When he found out the His mother hope was taking he was upset and angry. When trying to find his dad,and wherever he was taking he finally found them, and was angry at him blaming him for why hope was captured. Though Arctic was only trying to get her back seeing that Arctic really still loved her. Even arctic couldn’t kill his own son even if he didn’t show much ice wing traits he still couldn’t kill him, but in the end his own son needed Up killing him which lead to his 2000 year sleep. In DOD (not the first book) he didn’t want to change or change who he was he thought he was doing good in the world, and not evil. When he finally Mets his mother again after 2000 years he sobs because he never thought he would see her again. When his mother tried to convince him he still didn’t want to cause he liked who he was. But when he ate the strawberry he felt betrayed by moon and his mom asking her “mother I’m a good dragon right not evil?” I bet that hurt Hope to hear those word for her son, but she knew he was to dangerous for this world. When he turns into to peacemaker hope only says “his fate could’ve been different if she chosen a name like peace maker. Which wraps up for Darkstalker a character a liked a lot and so with his friends. I enjoyed reading legends of Darkstalker cause of how in-depth the characters are and the story line, it’s mixed with emotions, sadness, betrayal, and everything else. It definitely deserved its ranking honestly, I was surprised most books got B+ mostly the dark secret maybe have to rant on that honestly cause the book is amazing. Arc 2 books I wasn’t to surprised about there rankings maybe Dod (not the first book) sense I felt like it could’ve been written so much better sam with escaping peril a bit and winter turning but I couldn’t change anything about winters sense I can’t change the amazing character development he had in his book. Moon rising I wouldn’t change anything about it sense it’s written perfectly and same with talons of power. But jade think it’s time you show some people how amazing StarFlight is honestly.

I'm so glad to see Darkness of Dragons getting a high rating. I was starting to think I was one of the few on this planet that really enjoyed it (coming from someone who originally hated on and downright refused to read it for sometime). Yes, it's littered with flaws and wasted potential, and Darkstalker's fate could have been executed a little better, but I loved Qibli's side plot (the book made him one of my favorite characters), the Nightwing-Icewing battle and how it ended was awesome, Moon got together with Qibli, and I love how nearly everything came together in the end. If it weren't for those last few paragraphs, I think it could have been a decent ending to the series.
That being said, Darkstalker is still the best Wings of Fire book hands down, for all the reasons everyone stated already. The one, Darkness of Dragons, and The Hidden Kingdom are my Top 3 favorites (I think, I'm still working on that) I am sad to see Escaping Peril and The Lost Heir down so low since I also loved them, but oh well.
Sadly, I tried to give Dragonslayer a chance, and I almost fell asleep. I couldn't get into it for the life of me.

Darkstalker’s back story and the way Turtle uses his animus powers makes the whole story a lot better. The lost continent explains how there are new types of dragons from a different world, and that made the book interesting and fascinating to read.

In my personal opinion I think the fans might be a little too harsh on Dragonslayer, for the simple reason being that Tui established early on that the humans were not so different from dragons, and the dragons were slowly starting to come to understand them (difficult as it was), so I felt that it was nice to see things from the human's perspective. Plus it did a good job of following the points it needed, so I felt like it deserved to be higher than that.

Just felt like I had to point this out, I think one of the biggest reasons why Dragonslayer was made for a potential Arc 4. To me, if we ever get a book about Sky's perspective, Sky would learn that Humans and Dragons aren't so different after all but both races are too ignorant to realize that. My theory is that somewhere down the like Sky's morals will be challenged and where his loyalty lies (whether he is loyal to his human family or his dragon kind). I thought I had to say that and I'm sorry if this isn't irreverent to the conversation. Thanks for the ted talk

I kind of understand how some people wouldn’t like them much, but the books had small moments for me that made me enjoy them so much. In book 9, Turtle finally gets to be recognized by his mother, and it’s very heartwarming to me, because he’s carried guilt from not being able to help his father as a small dragonet, and he just…gets his moment! Not him obsessing over Qibli’s book ❤😂
Also, I’d like to point out, it’s interesting that all the legends go by the title DS DarkStalker, DragonSlayer. Just interesting. Was that intentional?

The order I read the series in (strangely enough I realize now) was:
    1. Dragonslayer
    2. Legends: Darkstalker
Then months later I picked up books 1-15 and the winglets, and I have to say- REREADING LEGENDS: DARKSTALKER BROKE ME. Reading it the first time before any of the main series books left me with 0 expectations, bias, or context when approaching it so I feel that it gave me a unique perspective on the 2nd arc. Reading it as a stand alone book still got me so emotional! (I did not understand the post-epilogue whatsoever and the Seawing Massacre was a SHOCKER lol.)
When I first read book 6, I jokingly guessed Moon had been hearing Darkstalker’s voice and you can imagine how surprised I was it was actually him. Him telling Moon selective parts of his story was super interesting to me and really kicked at my memory which was super foggy. Darkstalker crying over Clearsight in book 9 shattered so much tension and wrenched my heart out and so did the resolution of book 10 when I realized he was close to finding out about the lost continent and Clearsight’s life.
Rereading Legends: Darkstalker was such an emotional rollercoaster because I was constantly DREADING the inevitable crumbling of Darkstalker and Clearsight’s future. At the same time, every happy scene between them was so indescribably heartwarming and every time Darkstalker made a horrible decision or something happened to wedge them apart it totally broke my heart. The ending was more satisfying that I originally remembered in the sense that I completely forgot Clearsight and Darkstalker’s last conversation and how he saw a stream of her mind, falling sleep knowing that she loved him dearly and didn’t betray him out of hatred, which was comforting. It also hit me really hard when Clearsight thought to herself that maybe she should just wait to die in the avalanche. I didn’t know she mean it so literally in the line “I thought my life was over” in the Book of Clearsight. The way the book showcased her immense grief was kind of comforting because I thought she totally moved on from Darkstalker without a second thought to be with those Silkwings and he was the only one missing her. I’m also grateful that Clearsight finally confronted Darkstalker with all of his mistakes and flaws such as lying to her and being arrogant which he absolutely needed to hear. (Too bad he didn’t consider what she said and change for arc 2…) I’m also glad that Fathom left the story believing that Darkstalker did in fact do some good things and have a heart instead of regarding him as pure evil which I felt would not have allowed the book to end full circle so poetically.
In conclusion, I found Legends: Darkstalker to be AMAZING (rightfully S tier)! The beginning and middle of the book gave me so many powerful highs and lows and the ending was so encompassing. Reading it before ever reading the series and then again after gave me a whole new appreciation for this genius book and arcs 2 and 3. That said I wish it was infinitely longer (with the same quality)… and my heart needs to recover forever…
(Had to get this off my chest somewhere 😅)

I read Darkstalker's book recently and it was mind breaking to say the least. When I opened that book I thought I'd get to see Darkstalker's evil scheming from the egg, not... not such DEEP stuff. This book made think so much that I was mentally EXHAUSTED when I finished it (I tend to hyperfocus and read a book all at once).
I wouldn't change a single thing about it. It was written with the right POV. Having the main character not be Darkstalker to tell his story, and a character that can see more than any other, put, in my opinion, an incredible depth in the story and in Darkstalker's character. You get just the right amount of information and character development. UGH. And the epilogue makes it even better. It concludes the theme of the book with Fathom saying he didn't think Darkstalker was bad, but did bad things. That part where he read the spells on the parchment felt really powerful to me, too. It really proves that people are complicated, not everything is white and black. The whole book surfed those shades of grey and it was astounding I could go on for hours.
Overall I just think it is PERFECTION.

YES I LOVE DARKSTALKER! That book actually taught me how to draw, the cover of it. I also remember feeling really disturbed by it because I was young lol but I still loved it so much and I wouldn’t be drawing right now if it weren’t for that book. It deserves S tier 🥰

I've read darkstalker legends 4 times and I'm an emotional reck :') my favorite book in the world and it brings me so much happy, but broken feelings that throb in my chest for days. It hits harder the second or third time you read it. You notice smaller things. You listen to it and listen to clearsight amd darkstalker being so happy, but whilst knowing what lies ahead and how it'll all crumble and break and shower down and bury its raindrops in the dirt and never come back. Its so sad but I love it for some reason. And OH MY GOSH I'm a SUCKER for clearsight! I love how shes writen out and a bit anxious, I love how she plays her role SO FREAKING WELL!! I lover how she mourned her dragonets that were never born. Eclipse was the most mentioned dragonet and certainly would have been an amazing thing to hear about if she had becom a reality. Vigilance is certainly my least favorite queen bc of how she snapped darkstalker. I also hate arctic for leaving with whiteout at the same time. Darkstalker didn't deserve all of that piled on towering above him like agot mountain- which crumbled with him in it.

Noooo the lost content was sooooo good. But blue is my favorite character. I love the way he thinks, and i loved seeing him develop affection for cricket. I love how it expanded the lore, normally i wouldn't want something this expansive if you the author hadn't yet filled out what was already established but it was introduced soooo well! And I love how silk wings work and i wished they would have explored them more. And the sense of optimism within oppression was amazing! It doesn't have to be a+ but like high b or low a
