    If you stand straight up and don't have any body movement it doesn't matter where your accents are you have to move your body when you play that's according to Ray

    Similar to rudiments on drums: if you follow the 8th notes it will just be if you accent the 2nd note you will have much more control over the sound, making the piece much cleaner.

    Yea the only problem is i’m pretty sure if i took the audio file of this video and lined it up against a grid i would see that the timing is pretty much the same. Cause the thing that actually dramatically changed wasn’t the timing but the volume. Yes it’s gonna sound more swingy if you accent the offbeat even if the overall timing stays the same.

    • @Muzikman127
      @Muzikman127 Год назад +1

      Well sure, dynamics and articulation are just as important to Swing feel as the placement of the beats. For quarter notes it's pretty much *the* difference

    • @stoneagealienz874
      @stoneagealienz874 Год назад

      @@Muzikman127 except swing isn't just a feel it has a pretty clear meaning regarding the timing of notes. You can increase or decrease swing in your daw. that won't change anything but the spacing between your notes. That's it.

    • @Muzikman127
      @Muzikman127 Год назад +1

      @@stoneagealienz874 the DAW meaning of "ratio between 1st 8th and 2nd 8th being greater than 1" is an oversimplification, it's one small part of a wider rhythmic concept. The use of swing only narrowly to mean that one aspect of rhythm is a relatively recent idea that comes from software, but isn't the way jazz musicians historically have used the term, and isn't what the player is talking about here (although it is a part of it)

    • @Muzikman127
      @Muzikman127 Год назад +2

      @@stoneagealienz874 It's also sometimes been misunderstood that way by classical musicians writing about jazz too, who have often basically said "swing is when the first beat is twice as long as the second beat". It's probably this classical musician/academic's misunderstanding/reduction of swing that's led to the modern (more nuanced but still very reductive) DAW "swing percentage" meaning. And while that _is_ a useful and practical concept for all sorts of things, it's also quite a different concept to what jazz musicians mean when they talk about "swing", and not something any of the jazz greats who knew "how to swing" would recognise
      A better understanding of swing (in the context of playing in a mainline jazz idiom anyway) is "the micro rhythms and articulation that give jazz its characteristic timefeel". "Swung 8ths" is a part of that, but it isn't the whole story, or close to it

    But wait a sec, he wasn’t playing on the 2 and 4. The last walk was the same as the first one he said wasn’t right!! Maybe I’m not listening hard enough but the 2 & 4 walk at the end sounded like he was using the 1 & 3 as well!!

    • @jonhmusic423
      @jonhmusic423 2 года назад +11

      He didn't mean to only play on the 2&4, he meant to play on all quarter notes but use the 2&4 as reference points when counting and to stress them more in your playing.
      If you can dig into those 2&4 notes and get a bit of bite, then coupled with the snare you create a bit more back and forth from beat to beat.

    • @slimperkins
      @slimperkins 2 года назад +1

      Ok, that makes more sense. What I like to do is use the quarter notes then add a double in between the quarters to “shuffle” or “stutter” over to the next beat.
      When I was playing rockabilly and did pizz work I would do that and emphasize the 8th beat to shuffle between “phrases” but it all depends on how the music is shuffling.

    • @natespringer9934

      Not a scale just a walking bass line

    • @metallsnubben
      @metallsnubben 2 года назад +3

      You could say "ascending melodic minor with the minor 6th included as a passing tone" but I wouldn't necessarily say that's how you _think_ while playing walking bass
      But that's the notes, D E F G A Bb B C#
      Super roughly speaking, it's outlining chords by hitting chord tones (on especially 1 & 3), and putting cool passing tones in between. So it's not just finding the scale = what "selection of notes" to pick from, but it matters a lot whether you're going downwards or upwards, how many beats you need to fill before hitting a certain note etc
      Of course melodic minor is a case of classical theory using a similar "direction" concept and knowing scales is absolutely useful for playing jazz, just giving some extra context
