Somehting that impressed upon me of the chromatic approach, or passing notes, by Carol Kaye was, "Listen, for where you're at in yoru playing, the bass does three things. You root the chord, you keep rhythm, and you announce the chord changes by playing those passing notes. You do those things pretty well. Now, STOP ANALYZING EVERYTHING AND FEEL WHAT TO PLAY!" Yes, she got upset with me.
Love Carol Kaye...you can use so many superlatives to describe her: genius, legend, pioneer, etc. But, she's always struck me as someone who is irked by people who don't understand music as well as her. Like she doesn't comprehend how someone could Not know what she knows.
I have heard this explained before by a ton of other people, and I don't know what it is about you Scott, but when you explain it--it sticks. The workbook is fabulous too.
BEST EXPLANATION EVER!! of how to get started in jazz. Now I can look at a sheet of chords and not look like a "deer in the headlights!" At the very least I will have a starting point and let my ear help with the rest.
Same! This guy has the best lessons around. Everyone else who does lessons I get confused with very quickly, but this guy makes so much sense and just explains things so well.
Superb lesson: typical Scott where he'll give you some tools, explain how it all works really well and then gets you to do the work so you can apply the learning yourself. For transparency's sake I will say I'm a member of SBL and have also paid for some additional courses but no one else comes near to Scott & team. I'm a bit of a bass newbie really (am an OK guitar player) but loving every second of learning with SBL: yes he can make you work hard but it's all so full of joy.. Do get the free trial if you haven't already, and frankly I'd get a membership if you can afford it: so much great stuff in there. Hope you're all staying safe and enjoying your musical adventures out there.
I LOVE IT. I love how it actually expands my knowledge about Bass. But unfortunately, i really don't have a personal bass. I just borrow our Church's bass .. And the only time I could practice is Saturday, only time in the whole week.
After watching the introduction video, I believe I will continue with you. I've played classic rock bass for 40 years and now after retiring, I wanted to start learning jazz bass and this may be my ticket. Thanks and I will look forward to the next lesson.
@@sigiriabeysekara8723 Simply that it should (mostly) flow on from one note to the next, especially at the moment of chord changes. It's not just a series of arpeggios - as Scott demonstrates but doesn't say explicitly.
As a novice/ amateur with no professional/ performance aspirations, this lesson is great. Something that starts simple that I can build into to feel good about what I'm dying while just entertaining myself. Thanks Scott!
I just want to say thank you. I've messed around with playing guitar for years and have dabbled with bass, and never understood chord shapes when written out like they are on these tabs, but the way you explained it, it clicked for me. Thank you for everything!
This was the most fantastic lesson I've ever learned granted I've just started playing bass but I learned more in this one video than I ve picked up trying to figure out the bass for last 6 months. I've gone onto my computer and got the free 14 day tryout and already signed up as a member/Student on Scott's fabulous web site. I'm thrilled to start if the courses or Levels are anything like this video I'm going to be a very Happy Bass player or soon to be Bass player
Excelent class Scott, "you are the one",; this lesson stimulate me to search more information about this topic, very good, congratulations for your effort
This is an absolutely fabulous explanation. Thank you!! Now I can stop ducking my guitar player friend who’s been trying to meet up to play jazz standards. 😀
I love this formula. One question, when the next chord is the 5th of the chord you're playing, what do you like to do in that case? I figure the 3 obvious options are play the note again, chromatic above, and chromatic below. But maybe there's some cool trick?
Well i'm not him but you can do plenty of stuff, basically if you don't stay on the root or do a chromatic approach you can play any note of the chord, i like to move in 5th it makes a fun sound
I love it….!I have been looking for this formula, because hearing this all the time in jazz but found it so difficult, now the gate is open for me, who couldn’t read music. Thank you Scott…!🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Scott is such a good teacher; he just makes things sound so simple and makes it look effortless! If u play the bass and aren't a member of SBL, why not!? ...there's always something else to learn!
Thank you Scott!! That was, indeed, a proper bass lesson. Keep 'em coming! Maybe include a lesson on short/long swing-feel bass picking. Most players today cannot hit that double-note groove to save their lives and today's music sucks as a result. Make it happen Capt'n!
Been digging walking for years. I'm currently playing Lullaby of Birdland and of course it's another tune for running, sorry, walking around the fret board. Thanks Scott a great introduction to walking.
Great way to encourage intuitive playing!!...learn the notes on the neck, listen to the sound and feel of thirds, fifths, octaves, arpegios, diminished, chromatics and were to put your fingers on the neck, get used to playing a few lines and you're good to go!!...the rest is level 5 and up!!...thanks for sharing!!...
Awesome! My bass teacher recently taught me something like this with blues scales, we refer to it as walking the dog ahahaha. Will dip my toes into some jazz soon, thanks so much 😊
Scott, thank you! Watching your videos for quite some time and absolutely enjoy how you express all bass love, all devotion that oozes through the screen on bass padawans! Thank you again, this is totally mutual!
Loved this. I am fairly proficient at general music theory but wanting to learn some more jazz stuff. Thanks for these great ideas. I need to put them into practice now! More jazz stuff is always good as far as I'm concerned.
Just started playing jazz. Didn't think I'd need it but my band did a jazz number and I was completely lost. Thought I'd never be able to do it but as it seemed very difficult at the time. After watching this video I've realized that it is not impossible and will definitely give it a try. Can't wait for more. Thank you SBL.
I loved how you used all the concepts you talked about throughout the video at the end. That was some killer walking lines. I’d love to see you simplify other time signatures like 3/4, 5/4, 7/8 and how to groove in them.
Hey Scott! I've looked at your instruction for a couple of years now, and while you are an amazing bassist, I felt your instruction never presented at a level I could relate to (late comer to the musical world of Bass). I think your teaching style in this lesson is more relatable for those of us with a lesser learning acumen. I do appreciate your brilliance, and your connectedness with the bass-world community bringing to us learners tremendous opportunities to marvel. I'd love to see more of YOUR lessons presented in this particular teaching style. Thank you my friend!!
Really great lesson Scott. I've just picked up the bass after about 15 years away and this stuff is just what I need to get the fingers going again. Thanks very much
I like how this is a better produced version of your old walking bassline lesson. The real-time visuals of what you're doing makes it a bit easier to follow vs the old white board, lol
Loved your approach! I was an SBL member for some time and it opened my eyes in so many different ways, definitely changed how I understand the bass. When talking about walking bass, it's all about outlining the chords. You could add another level where you add the seventh of each chord!
Yesss!! I finally got it all figured out!! All this time I wanted to know the jazz pattern and now am going to feature this in my playing! Way to go Scotty 👍🏽
Thank You! I'm Loving your channel! I loved the chromatic "step"! I'm inspired to take my bass playing to the next level.. After playing for 45 years lol

A simple but important addition: a walking bass line isn't only harmonic and rhythmic underpinning - it's also a melody.
Please explain... what do you mean by "melody" in a walkimg bassline?
@@sigiriabeysekara8723 Simply that it should (mostly) flow on from one note to the next, especially at the moment of chord changes. It's not just a series of arpeggios - as Scott demonstrates but doesn't say explicitly.
