The textures, shadows and lightning look much better but the colors look alot less vibrant.
Yeah colors and contrast took a hit.
It's much more faithful to the original artworks though. But if you've played this game then and are very nostalgic of its looks, I understand completely why you dislike it
I wonder how hard it is for companies to remaster old games like this? It looks like it turned out well and i hope a lot more old classics get the same treatment.

It is bizarre is it a remaster ... cz they include new content so that mean they have been poeple working on old code to create new environment and story then portit in HD ?

Harder than anyone thinks. Dealing with someone else's code and hoping you did a good enough job is tricky. But still cheaper than making a whole new game
It's sometimes pretty easy (mostly if you are with the dudes who worked on it).
But first, you need to study the game and see what you could change, remove or potentially add. Some games were pretty hard to play, but their remaster makes them more simple and so, more opened for the people who are not familiar with games.
After all those remasters, I can't believe it actually looks better
But still it is a lazy remastered.

This is one of the few remasters that not only looks better, but stays faithful to the original by keeping the material consistent. Though it makes me wonder how much of it was just AI upscaling, and how much was custom textures.
Looks like character models were custom Textures on the various details with added poly counts, and environments more ai upscaled, but can’t be sure, dont quote me lol.
@@matthewwilliams3827 some environment textures look completely different like the tree trunk and leaves I doubt ai can do that
It is strange cause they apparently new story content, so that you get poeple working on source code and engine of that time to create new stuff ???
I wouldn't say better. Definitely different and graphically better. Aesthetically I'm indifferent to the changes. The new lighting does give similar enough vibes to the original and in some cases the higher texture detail is better.
But the game is already so stylised that it's not needed and the more realistic textures do look worse. Like Peyg's scar. It's not bad. But I like the original more.
But I do hope the fix the aiming sensitivity, and HUD cutting off. The remaster broke aiming and because the original game was made with a 4 by 3 aspect ratio and letterboxing, HUD elements do get cut off when cropped to be in an actual 16 by 9 aspect ratio
well I wouldnt call it that faithful, all the materials and characters looks much more realistic which is just a whole different art style, the original was way more cartoony

I was just playing Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, yesterday there's a Dreamcast emulator called Flycast, and it allows custom textures to be loaded into games, there's a tutorial on RUclips on how to get Soul Reaver, and many other games looking great with high resolution textures, texture super sampling, and rendering the games at high resolutions, as long as the PC, or device it's being emulated on can handle all of that, I've also heard some rumors of a remaster/remake of Soul Reaver might be in the works.
A legacy of Kain compilation would be great, including Blood Omen.
Great comparison, thanks for doing this for us! The game was always very beautiful, and showed Ubisoft's potential. So far I only see positive points, I hope they don't remove anything important, and that they can continue with this quality in the Prince of Persia remaster.

I can't believe I'm learning about this game now. Was listening to the OST for the film Treasure Planet until commenter pointed that the film influenced this game and thats how I got here.
The HD Remaster is now delisted in all digital stores, so the 20th Anninversary Edition will be the only game to play this if you haven't purchased it before.

Glad people have options, but I'm still rockin' the original on a CRT, as it was developed for ;)!
I continue to have the Xbox 360 version. It functions effectively on my Series X.

How did they still not fix the missing depth of field :/ The original BGE had an awesome DOF effect for a lot of the cutscenes, like the scene at 1:16. They broke the effect in the HD remaster and it looks like it's still missing. Shame
I'm just gonna stick with the original. Ubisoft pulled a Rockstar/Grove Street Games move and not only delisted the PS3 and Xbox 360 version, but also ruined the art direction and atmosphere. Also 30 FPS on Switch and separate graphics options on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S for a "remaster" of a 2003 game? Pretty bad optimization! So scared of what they'll do with Rayman and Splinter Cell remasters!

And... I mean, on the top of my head, the heroines from Plague Tale or Control or Remember Me or Life Is Strange or Hellblade are not really... all muscular or too squared jaws (as you seem to imply).

there are many corporate reasons why modern gaming sucks, mainly to do with their ideas of "gameplay"

The guy is being disingenuous and doing a poor job about it too. He just needs to look at this years games for the summer or whatever it was called and just skim through the trailers. I mean, you have to be blind of purposely not looking to not see it.

I dunno man, it looks like there was way less effort than I was hoping. Wish they would’ve given this a full remake instead of another “remaster”, Especially since this will do very little to attract a new audience outside of the core fanbase.

you can achieve a ton of things with a remaster without redoing EVERYTHING
a remaster is taking a loooot of work, udnerstanding code that you didn't write, implementing new rendering features into a 20 year old engine, redoing the character models and textures etc.
Let's see how ubisoft can mess this up. God I hope they don't. This game deserves all the love

If they kept the engine (and it looks like it's the case), then it probably wasn't possible without breaking the game's physics, like so many games out there...

I would have raised the same concern even if they had changed the color of the pearls, for example

And in the same way, if the original designer chose a specific representation for a character, there is a reason behind it and * if * there was actually a desire/need to change it (which I highly doubt given the character) I would at least want a valid explanation.

If it was a change decided before, I would just be curious why and it would end there anyway.

@@syncgabri4038 the conviction sentence is because it is plain to see to anyone that has eyes that it’s the ambient light in the scene that reflects on the model. It doesn’t matter how eloquently you write a paragraph it is obvious they did not change Jade’s skin tone.

Why not? I have the Steam version and there's loads of issues with visuals and controls. It's to see it getting some love and quality of life improvements
remade character models, more realistic and detailed lighting, actual more content in the game (dungeon), rerecorded soundtrack etc.
this is far more than just "uprezzed textures"
