Kinda hypocritical of Ubisoft's higher management to somehow blame Beyond Good and Evil's designers for a perceived failure when they themselves meddled with the original design concept multiple times and then cannibalized their own product by launching it close to a new Prince of Persia installment.

    • @akaimizu1
      @akaimizu1 3 года назад +53

Exactly. I will never forget that Ubisoft kind of Messed with themselves, on that one. They put it not only so close to Prince of Persia, but it also was released around the time other yearly blockbusters come out. I believe they also release Rainbow SIX around that time. They basically threw 3 or so games right in the same couple of weeks. This was basically Ubisoft's Equivalent of "The Month of Madness".

I remember when the game first launched, I joined in on the official forums and we kept whining for an OST release. Never got it, so someone got bored enough to look at the game files, and figured out a way to extract it from the PC version instead.

I got the impression when I was playing it references the news reporting subplot in the game. While the Domz themselves seem played pretty unambiguously evil, the news portrays the Alpha Sections as being good and worth supporting. Going beyond good and evil means searching for the truth, which often is more complicated. Or maybe it's about Jade herself, after what's revealed about her in the final stage. Kind of flimsy, I know. Maybe they just felt artsy game need artsy title.

I remember playing the hell out of this when I was 17. I had just moved back to my moms house in Thunder Bay after living in London(Ontario) for a year with my older sister and my niece. My mom had taken a job in Toronto and was working there then while trying to sell this giant house(7bed-4bath) which used to be an old group home. It was just me and my little sister living there at the time. I didn't have a drivers licence but my mom's van was always there to use if the occasion arose to grab groceries(actually when i learned how to cook). Living in a rural suburban neighborhood(forests, trails, ravines, rivers, all that comfey stuff) just out side of the city by 6km(3.7mi) there was only this little tiny convenience store off the main drag, and they rented PS2 and Xbox games. For some reasons they had the ubi 3 at launch, Splitter cell, Prince of Persia and Beyond Good and Evil for rent at one time. The first two were rented out, So I rented Beyond good and evil, grabbed some Pepsi and Doritos(and cigarettes because I looked a lot older than 19 and was chummy with the Grandma behind the counter, and it was 2003. I no longer smoke) I re rented the game 2 times after the OG 3 day window to return so I could finish it. To this day, It still holds a special place in my heart for getting me through a tough time as a teen.

The publishers not marketing the damn thing. And the fact gaming as a whole was in the 'we need more edge' phase of life which BG&E was not geared toward) the game not selling well was not it's fault, hell the fact the digital version sold very well should be telling that it is in fact viable in the modern day

There's are a few important details missing about the development of the second game.
At E3 2018, Ubisoft announced on stage a partnership with Hit Record, a company owned by Joseph Gordon Levitt, which would allow them to include fan content into the game, from artwork, to sound recordings and 3D models, and get paid to do so. Source: /watch?v=PeK9CP84Qlk
However, the amount Ubi made available to pay these contributors was only 50 thousand dollars, and it was supposed to be distributed equally among all of them.
TBSkyen has a video on the situation /watch?v=cFRoKKnaZds
Also, while they had shown the game at a playable state multiple times by 2017 and 2018, Ancel stated that a playable beta would only be available by the end of the 2019...
Might also be worth noting the game was announced in 2017 as a prequel to the first game, and the captain at the end was rumored to be Jade's mom since Ancel said they were related and the game was set a generation before jade was born. However, on the 2018 trailer, the story is set after the first game since Peyj is part of the crew, and Jade is revealed at the end to be on the role of the villain boarding the ship with two Alpha Section soldiers by her side and carrying a bloody katana.
To me, it seems like the reveal of the game was supposed to bring attention to the project and attract investors, but it was nowhere near being a project the team was certain they could deliver, and they probably didn't even had a story, so they tried to use the fans to help out and it just didn't worked out. I think Ubi is either too stubborn to say they cancelled the thing, or they'll take an ongoing project with low chance of success and refurbish into a Beyond Good and Evil game, since enough time would've passed they can just claim the project evolved into that state.
Sad, Jade is such a compelling character and the first game is a real gem... for the most part. Well worth getting on Steam if you can.

It's taken so long for BG&E2 to be made that once(or if) it does come out it will be the biggest jump in quality and shift of identity a sequel has accomplished. Judging from all the leaked footage, it looks like what the 3rd or fourth entry in a franchise would normally look like. The tone in what was shown of the sequel is so drastically different from the first game. It would be like in an alternate timeline where Capcom struggled to make a sequel to Resident Evil for nearly 2 decades and then they finally made one and it's what Resident Evil 5 was...

I literally just clicked on the video and have yet to watch it but I just wanna thank you for talking about this game in any capacity. It remains one of my favorite video games ever and hardly gets mentioned anymore, though it is understandable (due to there only being one iteration SO FAR and with the original coming out so many years ago).
Edit: Ok, I finished the video. Again, very cool to hear about the game in any capacity, though anytime the game itself is brought up I feel an immense amount of sadness. I just feel like whatever comes next either will not actually come to fruition and it will be officially canceled, or the next iteration won't be what the original had, which was lovable characters, incredible music, and a great amount of emotion.
This is random but I remember years ago when I was in college (2009 I believe) I randomly messaged the composer of BG&E (Christophe Heral) on Facebook just to say how much I loved his work for the video game. I remember asking him if he knew anything about the next game, if it was really going to come out, etc. And he only said that he hoped it would but that he couldn't say anything else. Just random, but that it was SO long ago, and still nothing has come to fruition is just very depressing, especially now with the rumors of Ancel being abusive in the workplace.

BG&E 2 with an open world co-op concept and an overarching story still could work and if successful, it’d be very interesting / ground-breaking.
The best thing to do would be to try to strike a balance between the two. Gamers like large worlds to explore but we still want to experience a story as well. Ubisoft is reported to have calls it one of their most ambiguous titles and I think that concept is a lot more interesting than a simple follow-up to Jade’s story. That’s basically playing it safe.
Seems hard to believe they waste that tech. The game has real-time strategic zoom on a planetary level. The possibilities are endless when you and your crew / co-op buddy can be on completely separate areas while the game still runs. I think some sort of Far Cry 5 Co-op adventure would be really cool.
I feel like the game would need some sort of dynamic elements to really take advantage of fact that your party can split like this. Your co-op partner should be able to assemble their own crew or group and go on separate missions or whatever. But then there would also need to be events that are big enough to require both of you to be together… it’s a difficult thing to execute. It’s like ‘okay sure, you and your friend can be on different planets if you want to but why would you? The whole point of playing co-op is to play together? What kind of mission structure could make splitting up a good even compelling idea? Not stupid fetch quests. It’d take some really good writing with a lot of dialogue options to sell something like that I think… and that’d take serious time.

Imo the title is what killed it. As a kid i didnt get it and it felt to adult or serious for my taste at the time and the more i learned about it the more it felt conflicting with the title. Beyond evil would be fine, if a bit generic, but itd grab my attention as a kid
But i absolutely would have bought it if it was called Beyond Advent Rising cause wheres the next entry in that series huh?

The game reminds me of the first Jak and Daxter.

My heart becomes warmed when Matt McMuscles skull mascot opens his mouth with that gregarious smile in the intro

This takes me back. I remember being maybe in middle school when this came out. I’d see the box on a store shelf or pics of it in a game magazine and “the girl with a camera and pig people” never appealed to me. I never cared enough to find out what the game was about or what type of game it even was.
