    Living in northeast Texas now, in the neighborhood of Dallas-Fort Worth , I've been able to connect with the Dallas chapter of the International Fantasy Game Society which has a core of veterans who go back 25 years and more. Things are back in the swing this year, there are monthly games currently mostly alternating between high fantasy and a sort of steampunk universe. The two dozen or so veteran core personnel go to great lengths to encourage individual development, even new players can get involved in story writing, gear and set production.

Pity we didn't have the money for the outstanding set-up the Camarilla LARP of Italy, but we made do: a Goth/Punk bar in our city called Die Maschine (it's gone, now, sadly). I was one of the few who brought props of all kinds to our game, but people's costuming was sweet. There are in general many LARPs in Germany, because it is the most populated country of the EU in the most populated region of Europe (Blue Banana) right in the center of Europe and the biggest economy (of Europe and third in the world after US and China) - and Germany is at the same time bordering other important European countries directly and indirectly most of the rest of Europe (which has double the population of the US). Germany is the hotspot of Europe - kind of the base. Its for the same reason the biggest transit-country in Europe (most traffic of all kind, from cars/roads to tracks/trains to internet hubs within or passing through). Plus its part of the most developed countries in the world AND part of the western cultural sphere in which RPGs/Fantasy/LARP as genre came from and/or evolved in the first place. It also has most castles in the world ... And for the same reasons you have the biggest and most most metal/rock concerts in Germany as well as most big Pride and Techno events, most of the 'huge and worldwide relevant' industrial' trade fairs and so on. And almost all other LARP events which were mentioned in the Video are also not far away - Poland, Czech, Northern Italy are directly or almost directly neighbors (and where btw. also back then part of the Holy Roman Empire culture/sphere - which is btw. also with the Frankish Empire before the main reason why the structures in Europe are like they are - and the given reasons are like they are)

    This is more like the European version. There are LARPs that rival the size and scope of these events in the United States, but there weren't any mentions of any of ours. For instance Pennsic is the world's largest full contact medieval war. It's every year around August and around 600 people attend. It's so large they have to set up a temporary post office.

      Hey there, sorry but SCA doesnt consider themselves to be Larp - and Pennsic has around 16,000 attendees (not 600) as far as I know. However, it doesnt consider itself to be the same hobby.. so I havent mentioned it for that exact reason. Same as I didnt mention reenactment or cosplay or any other "similar hobbies" 😊 We have mentioned the second biggest larp event in the world, which is in Camada. So we really tried to take an international look at this 👍

    • @DrachenGothik666
      @DrachenGothik666 Год назад

      10K to 16K is the attendance at Pennsic, not a piddly 600. It's SCA-based, & they'd get pretty pissy if you called their reenactment war a LARP. They're picky about authenticity of costuming to match the time-periods you're portraying. I do think of it as a kind of LARP, but it's not really a full-on LARP 'cuz there's no specific quests or tasks for people to do, & there's no experience points or storyline to follow.

      Even the reconstruction can be called LARP, they simply restore to the smallest detail a book on the history of this world, and in another game they restore costumes and life to the smallest detail, for example, the book The Lord of the Rings.
      And since all participants in both actions do not repeat step by step the actions of a particular character, but allow frivolity, let's say in dialogues, this is already a role-playing game just on different topics.
      And yes, people involved in imitation and acting out something based on real history really do not like when they are called role players)))))

    It is interesting how the fantasy genre seemed to be focused on fighting only. In my country the fighting part has separated into it's own sport (largest event is the yearly organized Sotahuuto - ruclips.net/video/d5KY19FjGQM/видео.html) where there is no characters involved, but instead the fighting is a team sport like any regular sport would be. Therefore in regular fantasy larps there is few or even none fighting involved, instead there is intrigue, mystery, and most of all, character interactions.
    Also interesting that I have participated in all 6 categories of larp, since I primarily am mostly fantasy larper. Of course I have been in none of the bigger ones you mentioned, but smaller productions back here.

      - There's some main plot if you are interested (finding out more about the aliens, seeing if there's still other humans alive, political plot wihtin the last resistance etc)
      - you can interact with other groups and do all kinds of roleplay (trading for ressources, forming bonds etc)
      - and of course you can come as all kinds of roles including ones that dont fight at all

      Of course there's progression! Each game, you get experience to build up your character, so you can end up pretty "powerful", as far as the game is concerned. You can learn new spells (medieval fantasy) or abilities to add to your character, but you'll need to roleplay learning them. A good GM (or group of GMs--most LARPs have a group that runs the game story) will come up with good stories, quests to go after, & other tasks. All LARPs have a main storyline & side stories you can follow & participate in.
