- Whether it’s industries crippled by high energy costs, labor market shortages, or an acute lack of progress in the areas of digitalization and innovation, the problems plaguing the German economy have been well documented. But what can be done to restore growth into a tired economic engine? DW Business speaks with Clemens Fuest, head of the Ifo Research Institute, which conducts a monthly survey of 9000 business leaders, about what's ahead for Europe's largest economy and why there might be light on the horizon.

I can confirm this. Last time I wanted to contact a German lawyer, as I searched on their website, only Fax and Telephone numbers were provided. So I switched to another.
This dude has to be the most rational guy on the planet
Maybe they need to start accepting english speakers specialist? I'm electrical engineer from Poland, have B2 english and german speaking level, was looking for a job in Germany, and there was always a feeling, that I was rejected because my german was not good enough. Then I started to look at the Netherlands, and it took my 2 weeks to find job without knowing Dutch at all.
Also, immigrating to germany is easy if you are software engineer or just regular construction worker. Electrical engineering is so protected by bureaucratic rules, there is really no way to work there as independent specialist without 10 german certificates.
I agree about increasing the acceptance of English speakers. Obviously, as someone who lives in Germany without speaking German, I'm subjectively predisposed to support this, but even objectively speaking, it's hard to dispute that English is the international language that most engineers and IT professionals use, so if a country is not sufficiently open towards it, it cannot attract enough skilled workers in these professions. As a software engineer I'm lucky enough that my current team is English-based, but once this project ends I might end up leaving Germany. Also, despite its reputation, even in Berlin I find it rather difficult to rely on English; in fact I don't think it's easier than in Poland (I lived there too for a few years). In Poland most people at least have a positive attitude towards English even if they don't speak it well, but here in Germany I often feel that I'm not seen/treated well as an English speaker.
Sure, I might/should learn German eventually, but to be honest if the culture is not welcoming, there is a high chance that I'll just move to somewhere else instead, especially since you can earn a much better salary in some neighboring countries.
Also, the housing situation is horrible, at least here in Berlin. It's extremely difficult to find the first apartment as a newcomer - a lot of people say that you're lucky if you're able to rent ANY apartment with a few months search (since many landlords don't even talk to you unless you have years of renting records in some weird German system), and if you really want a nice apartment, be prepared to be searching for 6-8 months. I'm lucky that my company is renting my place for me. If they didn't I simply wouldn't have come to Germany. This housing situation also gives me the feeling that I'm not welcomed here, and I personally don't feel safe.
@martin , Sorry, I believe that the Polish Catholics, with their track record towards everything that is not Polish Catholic in Poland since 1860, would do better to be discreet before boasting on social networks.
B2 german level, still not good enough? Or is it B2 level only for your english proficiency?
Dont come to Germany. There are much better places. Look Switzerland, Netherlands, Denmark. You can focus on your career instead of learning German and losing time. And better paid with less taxes
Mate do you speak English? I mean Poland is close enough and EU.... M
Language proficiency is not a small barrier it means developing a complete sense of culture , and now, suddenly, every company has switched German language first for every level of software engineer, this is creating a brain drain and will only going to increase. Language problem, low pay and high tax make every high-tech go for other greener pastures.
Like the ones in the Swiss Alps.
It is unbelievable how there are so many well-educated people from the East of Europe, Greece, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria that speak German and are not given one chance to have a professional job in Germany...and still, they are complaining that they have no workforce and that they should bring people from outside of Europe! I studied my Master's degree at a German University along many other international colleagues and none of us obtained remotely well-paid jobs. The only jobs that we managed to obtain were jobs in factories. So I honestly do not understand if this is a lie...and Germany has no workforce shortage or discrimination or simply bad politics!
Mate.... I studied here.... Non EU.... German B 2-C1...even went onsite..... Got rejected n keep getting rejections.... UK is the way mate.....
Politics is not good....
If you speak German, you can work in Switzerland.

The best solution to Germany's economic problems is to protect it's energy pipelines against "unknown" assailants who are capable of planting a 500kg remote controlled explosive under water. I wonder which navy is advanced enough to install such a heavy pay load undetected using special operations forces and advanced submarines. I guess we'll never know.

Well, some insider notes from the top of my head after 7 years in Berlin:
- Housing market is chaotic to say the least, and read news last week that rents increased 18% on average last year.
- For going to the arbeitsamt one needs to speak German or bring along someone who does. I met great people there but a B1 language level in German is necessary. Needless to say how better would be having these services on other languages.
- It is almost impossible to book a meeting in one ausländerbehörde. There are no bookings available, simply.
- Migrating from std work visa to permanent residency visa should be simpler.
- Everything seems to be paper driven. I recommend having a look on other EU more digitalised states.
- Germany has made its political and economic choice on energy, not a really wise one and the country is paying the price....
- Outside of Germany it is quite rare to have people studying German. Of course there is the Goethe institute but FFS it's utter expensive.
They closed many Goethe institutes, that's a shame!

Germany needs to stop being so protective of their language and open themselves to the possibilities of creating jobs where English can be used and German is not a must.
Everybody is refering to Germany as a wjole when problems arise. Why not referring to the companies? They have to get back to become more competitive and develope better. The construction sector was driven by low interest rates, finally these rates are back to normal. Over the last 10 years the flawed technical industry was covered up by a unhealthy boom in the building sector.
Because industry is being f**ked by Germany's inept government and slammed with the highest taxes in the world. It's an entirely homemade problem, and one a 6yo would have seen coming.

A sovereign state is a state that has the highest authority over a territory.
International law defines sovereign states as having a permanent population, defined territory, a government not under another, and the capacity to interact with other sovereign states.
