I think the only ones who benefit from the salary taboo and contract restrictions are the companies. I actually broke this rule because I wasn't aware of it (young and stupid) and I managed to get myself and my colleague a raise because our new colleague with no experience was getting more than us, which we weren't supposed to know, but we complained to management....

Exactly. People manager / HR should have to communicate the salary for groups or departments on request. At least the range or even the exact numbers for all in the department but obviously anonymous.

I live within the Washington DC area, and I'm a government contractor. We all freely tell each other our salaries, because it's in our best interest to know if we aren't being paid enough for our work. It's also easy to change companies since there are so many jobs, so once you find out you aren't earning enough compared to your peers, it's certainly possible to change companies and get a bump in income.

If you are employed by the government in Germany you are usually paid according to a tarrif scheme so there, you can look up everyone's salary based on their degree (e.g. bachelors, masters, etc) and the years of work experience they have. This - by the way - also applies to the chancellor or president.
I am a senior software engineer in a big tech company and i earn $300k in Austin TX. and yes we are open about our pay and want more pay because of inflation.. like all the time

Netto ist wie der Supermarkt wo man einkaufen kann. Und einkaufen kann man nun mal nur mit dem Netto Gehalt
@@marvin2678 genau 😄. Brutto und Netto gibt es aber auch in anderen Bereichen, gerade Populisten heben besonders gerne die Brutto Zahlen hervor. Gutes Beispiel sind Zahlungen an die EU (Brutto), unterschlagen aber die Zahlungen der EU an Deutschland.

@@hlbwlt4867 Wir sind trotzdem der mit Abstand größte Nettozahler und die Vorteile der EU tendieren mittlereile gen Null - vorausgesetzt, man beschäftigt sich ideologiefrei mit der Thematik. ;-)
It seems that people in Germany think Americans are completely transparent in revealing their salary. I think we are just the same as Germans. It is not very appropriate to ask (or to tell) other your salary. Only 2 things can happen - either YOU will feel bad because they earn more money - or THEY will feel bad because you earn more money. Both ways loose.
So how much do Janusz, Cari and Manuel earn - Netto?

I was surprised with how many people actually gave a direct answer to the salary question! It’s so refreshing to see people be comfortable with that. I love the directness of Germans! 😍
I mean you never know how many random people they have interviewed on the street to be able to get the response for this video. Maybe it's only 5 out of a 100 they asked that were comfortable enough to disclose their salaries. In that case, I wouldn't call it 'many'.

I think the topic of salary is a universal taboo questions in all countries. Because people tend to link the salary with self worth together and also people don’t really know what’s the real questions behind it. Not everyone has a good intention to it. So salary makes people kind of vulnerable.

"Wir arbeiten alle an der gleichen Maschine, jeder gleich schnell - und trotzdem hast du 5 verschiedene Leute mit 5 unterschiedlichen Gehältern"
Die einzigen, die von der Geheimhaltung der Löhne profitieren sind die Unternehmen - manchen is das sogar so wichtig, dass unter Androhung einer saftigen Vertragsstrafe explizit der interne Austausch unter den Mitarbeitern übers Gehalt untersagt wird (extern natürlich genauso).
Es gibt Leute mit regelmäßig dutzenden Krankentagen im Jahr und welche, die nie krank sind. Man munkelt, die Ausgangssituation der beiden sei bei Gehaltsgesprächen unterschiedlich.

Man merkt, dass die Menschen mit ausländischen Wurzeln viel offener waren und direkter geantwortet haben, während es für die Deutschen eher ein Tabuthema war.

Sehr interessant 👍 Neben den meist nicht preisgegeben Gehältern (was mir relativ klar war) habt ihr vor allem sehr viele interessante Gesprächspartner gefunden!👌 Ich persönliche gönne jedem sein möglicherweise sehr hohes Gehalt, solange es sich um einen seriösen Job handelt. Ich hab euch jedenfalls seit heute abonniert 😉
Frankfurt is defintitely very expensive for regular people due to the banking sector I think. Also they tend to be quite reserved about it as Janusz noticed.
Ihr habt meine Kritik aus einigen Videos vorhin berücksichtigt. Dafür bin ich dankbar. Das möchte ich zu dem Video sagen. Es gibt finanziell keinen großen Unterschied zwischen den Städten in Deutschland.

It's a very uncomfortable question for a lot of people. We tend to see our value based on how much we make. I wonder how many of these people are being honest about their salaries
I think it's the opposite. I live in the US and here it's just rude to ask people about their finances, not because it's a measure of a person's value, but because it's not - as in, my value isn't determined by how much money I make.
@@nn5410 have you ever considered why it's rude to ask someone about there finances though? And why so many people can't just answer the question directly? It's different for everyone but a lot of people don't feel comfortable talking about their salaries for fear that the it's not enough by society's standards. I'm American as well so I completely understand it's not a question most citizens here would be so open to talking about either, but there is an underlying reason for that. We shouldn't base our value to society or measure our success solely on how high or income is, but for a lot of people, particularly Americans, it's certainly like that

It's a bit like putting yourself into a measurable ranking, you expose yourself.
If there would be another measurement, maybe we would use it, but there isn't.
Is a housewife with 10kids worth more than a mother with 8 kids ? Would you allow this measurement to be made at all ?
Maybe you dislike measurement of salery, maybe you dislike measurement in general.
The thing with the salary in germany is: "The more you earn the less you are willing to speak about it". And teachers are still very open about it with maybe 66k a year.
The sentence "because so many get jealous" is also because we had discussions about taxing the rich people more and they always drop that sentence to shut that argument down.
And if your contract says you cant talk about your salary your company can shove it up somewhere because its not valid, you can scream your salary so that everyone on the planet can hear it and it would be completely legal

However im very certain that people know very well that the "you cant tell anyone your salary" part of your contract is not even valid in germany and you cant be punished for it
As a born and raised Frankfurter, I think you'll need at least around 2.5k€ in frankfurt to live comfortably. This accounts for rent for a 2room apt. outside the center (but still inside frankfurt) for around 1k€ to 1.5k€ and then around 1k€ left for food, hobbies and savings.
Less can work as, well but i think it wont be as carefree and you'd not be able to go out as often.
1000 EUR for food and hobbies? As a single person this is extremely high. Or do you go out eating almost every day?

Ich mag die Folgen über Gehalter weil ich bin immer neugierig auf wie viel Mann verdienen kann in verschiedenen Stellen. 😊 Aber ich verstehe, dass Leuten können ängstlich sein über das zu reden.

Actually, the concept of hiding the salary is advantageous only for one person - a boss of the company. If everyone suddenly knows the salary of each other in the company - it will be the hell for a boss, many people will start asking for a raise.
Sure that's why lottery millionaires should always tell that they won. A high salary can attract people which want to take it from you. Especially in Frankfurt.

Some peopl are totally ok with only the boss knowing their salaries. They might even benefit from it.

I think salary being a taboo topic is a global phenomenon. It is the same here in South Africa. I think as social creatures we gravitate towards seeing the world through the lens of of hierarchies, and salary, whether good/bad or effective/not is a way of placing someone in a social hierarchy.

3000€ netto. Knapp drüber. Als Softwareentwickler, in einer ostdeutschen Großstadt. Da nicht nur die Zahl wichtig ist: nahezu keinerlei materiellen Benefits, aber viel Homeoffice, und moderate Stresslevel, nach ca. sechs Jahren im Beruf.

Es kommt auch immer sehr auf die Ausgaben an. Gerade Homeoffice heißt oft auch, dass man niedrige Kosten für Mobilität hat. Wenn dann die Wohnung auch günstig ist, hat man auch mit 3000 netto ziemlich was über.

Hallo ihr Lieben :) bei uns im Raum Paderborn sind die Gehälter natürlich viel niedriger , aber da ich davor in Großstadt gewohnt habe, kann ich sagen, dass man in kleineren Städten deutlich weniger Stress hat ( Miete, Straßenverkehr etc..)
Das Leben in vielen Großstädten ist viel zu teuer zu geworden , selbst für Mittelschicht...
Was würdest du sagen, was angenehmer zu Leben ist in Bezug auf frische Luft, Ruhe, viel Natur und ein friedvolles Leben. Eher kleinere Städte oder?

Ich wohne auf dem Land und würde niemals tauschen wollen, ein Tag ja aber dann wieder zurück in echt idyllische Verhältnisse, das ist wahrer Luxus. Selbst hier ist das Leben aber viel teurer geworden!

Viele Berufe sind so schlecht bezahlt, das wird hier leider nicht gezeigt. Einzelhandel, Pflegeberufe usw. Die meisten Menschen sind hier nicht bei der Bank angestellt

1. "Vermögensberater" kann sich jeder Depp nennen, da es keine geschützte Berufsbezeichnung ist. 2. Wenn der 300k EUR einnimmt, geht das nur über entsprechende hohe Provisionen, die zu Lasten seiner Kunden gehen. Wäre ich Kunde, würde ich da jetzt sofort mein Depot canceln. Vermögensaufbau kann man übrigens prima selbst betreiben. Dazu bedarf es keiner "Berater".

Here in the Midwest in the US, we aren't transparent at all with salary and it is actually quite taboo to do so. Not sure where these folks are getting the idea that we tell all.
I'm from the Midwest also, and I agree. However, on the US coasts, you have have some ego driven people who base their entire persona and character on their wealth and incomes. And of course, you have some people who are no where close to being wealthy but try to live like they are wealthy.

I'm originally from the Midwest but moved to Germany some time ago. I think it depends on the job or career. There is no mystery around what you are expected to make in your career in sales, tech, medicine, teaching and most careers that are well-paid and transparent about potential earnings and average salary. This info is not hard to find out. Jobs that are lower paid and not skill-orientated or require little education may not disclose their salary upfront, most entry-level jobs are for students and people who simply want to have a job in the service sector. I've only seen people afraid to talk about how much they make if they are in a job that pays poorly. Other than that, especially in the U.S. we pretty much know what everyone makes based on their jobs. Germany may be different, because of the discretion, it is hard to gauge actually if people are being underpaid or wages controlled because of the taboo of talking about earnings.

My experience with German companies is very bizarre. Two people working on the same role with same job expectations will earn very differently. I know two friends of mine who are working at the same company and the salary difference is more than 30,000 Euros/year for the same job role. That is why it is like an unwritten rule in Germany that no one wants to talk about salaries (because they know they might be earning more than others and companies and employees know it very well).
Is really everything the same? 30k difference does sound a lot.
Just because it’s the same role, doesn’t mean that other factors are at play.

Some jobs salaries depends also heavily on the experience like software development or hw design. Juniors earns definitely less in these roles. I dont knownif itmis the case here.

I think the first person wanted to buy some time by asking whether it's gross or net to consider whether it's okay to disclose your salary; otherwise, asking this question doesn't make sense

Ja. Gehälter und Lebenshaltungskosten sollten zusammenpassen. Gibt es in Frankfurt oder anderen deutschen Städten eine obdachlose Bevölkerung?
@@maxineporter8848Ich habe andere Städte noch nicht besucht aber es gibt sehr viel Armut und Obdachlosigkeit hier in Frankfurt. Bestimmt mehr als in anderen Städten die so Groß sind.
Die Sache mit Frankfurt ist, dass das Durchschnittseinkommen aufgrund von Finanz, Banken, Versicherung und Immobiliengeschäften höher ist wie im Rest Deutschlands. Andererseits aber auch hohe Armutsquote, vorallem in den Randgebieten. Schlechte Lokalpolitk hinsichtlich Integration,Arbeitsmarkt,Städtebau usw. Einige profitieren, viele aber auch nicht. Hoher Migrantenanteil, stark ghettoisiert (eigenständig sowie durch den Staat)@@maxineporter8848

@@maxineporter8848ja gibt es. Leider sehr viele, da es in Deutschland zwar gute Sozialsysteme gibt, aber es trotzdem leicht passieren kann, aus der Situation ohne Arbeit nicht mehr rauszukommen und dann rutscht man ab oder entwickelt eine Sucht
In Australia, most employees are paid fortnightly (every 2 weeks). So it’s a bit harder to make a direct comparison when Germans are paid on a monthly basis.

Warum habt ihr so wenige Frauen interviewt?
Hallo aus einem der Hochhäuser. Abgesehen von den Verschwiegenheitsklauseln die viele in ihrem Vertrag haben hat man sehr viel Konkurrenz. Also gilt es Angriffsfläche zu minimieren, zu denen eigentlich alle privaten Informationen zählen. Denn Freunde findet man in den ganzen Türmen eher nicht also sollte man die privat Sachen auch privat sein lassen.
Verschwiegenheitsklauseln für Gehälter sind in den meisten Fällen eh nicht gültig.
Ja hab ich auch gehört, gerade bei der DZ-Bank im Consulting soll es ein heißes Pflaster sein..

Kürzlich ein Video gesehen, wo so eine Umfrage im Raum London gemacht worden ist. Da waren die Befragten deutlich offener und spontaner in den Antworten.
I was surprised to hear people say Americans are more open to talk about their salary. I don't think this is so; discussing salary is taboo in the USA.
I had the same thought and even agree with it being taboo.
Gen Z is changing that and its refreshing. The employer is often the only one that benefits from not discussing salary. California finally made it a requirement to put in a salary range for all job postings.
I'm born and raised in the U.S. we talk about salary all the time, but it depends if the person has a professional career or a job. People with jobs usually don't talk about it as much, unless it is to complain to others about it. People with careers don't mind because it's usually why they got into their profession in the first place...because it pays well or has the potential to pay well.
Germany must be really good at breaking barriers like US or even Canada.

Die Klauseln sind nicht rechtens. Außer in hohen Manager positionen. Ansonsten dient sie nur dazu, die Leute klein zu halten :)
the salary gap is catastrophic in Germany. A hard working middle or low class employee gets enough to survive, while someone in finances speaks about a 6 figure salary.
It's only natural that people in finances make so much money, their lives are sold to the devil essentially, they have no meaning. Beyond around 80000 euros per year, money does not make you happy. It is true that not that many people make 80000 in Germany, still, but the idea that you should be jealous of investment bankers that make 500000 a year, remember that their entire lives revolve around money, and they are likely spiritually vapid and rely on expensive hobbies like prostitution, drugs and golf to make their lives bearable.
Everybody is free to choose their career. Not everybody wants to work in finance field. Anyway in Germany the paygap between people with no studies and people who study and have a career is really small in comparison with USA and other capitalist countries. I know handworkers who have jobs between 2700-10000€ netto and people with Master studies who earn around 2500-3800€. Yes, there are people who earn around 100-120k, but after taxes and everything you just get 4800-5500€ netto so not even double as someone who never bothered to study and had no will in life.
Things will change soon enough. People that work in trades are absolutely critical to a functioning city, these finance people are NOT that crucial and AI will soon be automating and doing a lot more finance tasks.
And they always nag about usa . They don’t even look at their poverty gap .

There are few reason why in Europe and maybe elsewhere it is the taboo to speak about salary but one of many is probably companies are benefiting from this so you keep your head down.
Ich habe für knapp 15 Jahre in den USA gearbeitet und dieses Gedanken, dass alle Amerikaner so offen mit ihre Gehalt sind, das glaube ich gar nicht. Es war auch wie hier in Deutschland, dass ist am meistens ein Geheim war.
I can understand why high earners mostly don't want to speak about it. I came to europe as an refugee and fought my way up and now that I have reached 200k a year, I see jealousy, entitlement and other issues I didn't have before coming from other people. So now I prefer to stay lowkey to avoid unnecessary stress for me and my family.

Das würd mich mal in Köln interessieren. Gilt der Rheinländer doch generell als sehr offen.
Bei uns in der Firma ist das kein Thema. Da wir im öffentlichen Dienst arbeiten. Wenn man also weiß welche Position derjenige inne hat und vielleicht auch noch die Erfahrungsstufe kann man das ziemlich genau aus einer Tabelle ablesen.
Gehälter sollten grundsätzlich immer transparent sein, denn ich bin sicher, dass viele durch die Geheimniskrämerei schamlos ausgebeutet werden.
Ich finde ganz klar das wir darüber öffentlich reden, genauso wie welche Partei wir wählen. Denn alle Firmen oder Institutionen wissen sehr viel über uns und können uns so leicht ausnutzen oder beeinflussen. Aber wenn wir darüber reden würden, dann könnte wir besser gegen diese datenausnutzung unserer privatensachen kämpfen und gemeinsam das Land und unser Leben verbessern, das das die Mehrheit wieder gut leben kann und nicht nur die viel verdienen.
Denn durch das nicht drüber reden gibt es in vielen Firmen Leute die da schon sehr lange arbeiten und weniger verdienen wie neue Kollegen, obwohl beide die gleiche Arbeit machen.
Wenn wir darüber nicht reden, werden andere Menschen ausgenutzt! Und deswegen gibt es so viele Neider!
Aber keiner tut was dagegen!
Gegen diese Ausnutzung! Von den Zeitarbeitsfirmen will ich gar nicht erst anfangen, da wird es noch schlimmer!
Hochhäuser sind laut Definition höher als 22 m OKF und das gibt es auch häufig außerhalb Frankfurts

Es freut mich, dass ihr endlich in meiner Stadt gelandet seid :) aber mal ganz ehrlich, ihr hättet besser in andere Stadtviertel fragen können um bessere Antworten zu bekommen. Es gibt auch "normale" Menschen die auch "normal" Leben können, mit einen "normalen" Gehalt. Ja, es ist etwas teurer geworden wegen Inflation, man kann aber trotzdem mit einen Gehalt als Single von 1,500 netto zurecht kommen. Es ist zwar kein luxus leben, aber man kann schon davon leben in dieser Stadt. Soooo teuer ist es hier nicht. Kann aber auch sein, dass ich etwas voreingenommen bin weil ich seit Jahren hier lebe 😅

Wie schafft man es, mit 1.500,-€ zurecht zu kommen? Das habe ich mich immer in Frankfurt gefragt, wie lebt eine Krankenschwester, ein Pfleger oder jemand, der/die im Supermarkt arbeitet? Ich frage mich das wirklich immer wieder. Vor allem, wo wohnt man, wenn man 1.500,-€ netto verdient? Sehr weit außerhalb, so dass der-/diejenige eine Stunde braucht, um nach Frankfurt zu kommen? I'm the head of technology department in Poland at German company. I earn 6700 polish zloty what gives netto ~1550 EUR per month. And it's standard salary in my quite small town. Cost of living in Poland is maybe 30-40% smaller than in Germany so be grateful for the conditions that previous generations have created for you.
When i was poor student I used to shop in a German supermarket called Netto. Wonder if there's any link with the German word? You would onky shop there if your Netto was really low.

ist schon richtig so das das man persönlich sein gehalt nicht verrät. Meine Erfahrung ist auch das das gehalt privat bleiben sollte. Warum ? Es sorgt für Neid, Eifersucht, falsche schlangen aber auch unruhe in einer firma. Aber wenn man sein gehalt anonym teilt oder im internet ist es absolut legitim. Ich war früher anderer meinung und habe mich gefragt warum man das gehim hält aber Menschen beurteilen einen nach seinem gehalt, aber auch die erfahrungen die machte sind erschreckend. Aber wenn man sowieso den reichen lifestyle lebt und spendabel ist ist es kein problem oder wenn es im bekannten kreis sehr stabil zu läuft.
Das hängt aber auch stark von der steuerklasse ab

Das ist die Finanzhochburg in DE, das sollte man bedenken. Wenn die jetzt das gleiche in Berlin - außerhalb des Regierungsbezirks natürlich - fragen würden, kämen da wahrscheinlich deutlich niedrigere Summen dabei raus.

Ich bin immer im Frankfurt gegangen, um Kaffee zu trinken und zu. Und ich wundere immer wie verdient man diese Leute mit Anzug. Die sehen so kuhl aus. Obwolh die nicht so hier offen sind nach Befragung, mindestens habe ich Idee wie verdient manche und welche Beruf kann man im Frankfurt besser leben.

Ich finde es lustig, dass so viele haben die gleiche über Amerika gesagt, dass in Amerika man teilt sein Gehalt miteinander. Ich glaube das eigentlich falsch ist. Amerikaner sagen was sie sind von Beruf aber es ist trotzdem unhöflich normalerweise zu sagen wie viel man verdient.
