You can do it another way by converting a stroke to an object. First select the stroke (using the selection tool "V") , then go to Object > Expand Appearance. Now you should be able to apply a gradient like you would with any other object. Hope this helps.
Make sure the "Artboard Tool" from the side toolbar is selected, then go to the top toolbar and select the "Artboard Option" icon. Under the "Display" check the "Show Center Mark" I hope this will help. Thank you for watching!

nice looking clock but unfortunately my version of illustrator (cs5) doesn't let me add gradients to stroke, only to fill. Strange.
