When this movie was first released, it was just called "Raiders of the Lost Ark", like it says on the poster and the title credits. Apparently, the "Indiana Jones and the" part has been officially added more recently.
6:30 - You've never heard of these stories before? Were you not introduced to anything Biblical as a child (regardless of what you believe or not)? The stories are iconic. 10:33 - Ford's shooting of the swordsman was completely ad-libbed as he and several crew members were quite ill at the time and feeling quite "sick and tired" from all the takes. 15:24 - If you look carefully you might be able to discern the sheet of glass between the cobra and Harrison Ford. 17:55 - The plane that never existed (except in some versions in Nazi concept drawings).
Fun fact: the "big guy" that he fights by the plane plays The Big Guy That Indy Fights in all 3 movies. Former British wrestler Pat Roach played the huge Sherpa in Marion's bar AND the bald German guy, then went on to play a massive Indian guy in Temple of Doom. He played a massive Gestapo agent that Indy fights in Last Crusade, but Spielberg ordered his footage cut and destroyed after Roach said publicly that Spielberg couldn't satisy his wife, Kate Capshaw, who he had met while filming Temple of Doom.
Indy's friend who helped him find the ark is played by actor John Rhys Davies. You might recognize him as the dwarf Gimli in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The "shooting of the swordsman" was supposed to be a full fight but Harrison Ford was unwell so a quick change out of necessity turned into a classic moment!
Not only a classic moment in cinema but I feel a full on 'Pat Roach' fight would only slow down the chase for Marion. These 10 seconds keep up the pace while giving the audience an unexpected chuckle.
Not actually true. Harrison ford has said that was a myth. That scene how it is on screen is exactly as it was In the script. One of those pre internet myths that has been dispelled by a lot of proof but keeps making the rounds.
Glad you enjoyed it. I think its a testament to just how skilled/talented Spielberg is as a director that this movie holds up so well with modern audiences. He's truly a master at blocking out a scene for the frame and his efficiency in conveying information is incredible. And that all comes together here to create a wonderfully paced adventure that's a heap of fun from the first moments of the film to the last. That and I still think action sequences that are actually filmed will always be more thrilling to watch than anything you can do in a computer. The scene where he has to climb under the moving truck, get dragged holding the whip and climb back up just wouldn't hold the same weight if they had done that through cgi.
Another great reaction. Not sure if you noticed, but Indy's Egyption friend Sallah, was played by John Rhys Davis, who played Gimli in Lord of the Rings. Hope you are doing well Jade.
VERY excited you got to react to this. I read about the collaboration in the spring before it's summer release and my geek friends and I lost our minds. "How amazing was the combo of Spielberg and Lucas going to be?" They did NOT disappoint.
Saw this during its premier back in 1981 while in college and the audience in a packed theater absolutely loved the film! Gasps, cheers and laughs-a real thrill ride of a cinematic experience! Regrettably the series never quite captured the magic of the first film, but the first three films are well worth the time to view.
When this came out, and for at least 20 years after, it was just called "Raiders of the Lost Ark"... Indiana Jones didnt get added until a much later box set video release... which is also why the Titles still just say "Raiders,,,"
It's nice to see you watch a movie that doesn't make you cry. You deserve a break from all those heartaches. It's good for me as well because I don't have to cry either.
Hahaha true! I didn't even think about that cause in my day to day life I get to laugh and enjoy things a ton especially as I do content for my gaming channel as well with fun games!

I wish you all possible happiness, young lady.
Welcome to one of the greatest adventures, ever made as a movie! I saw this in the cinema, in 1981, and just saw Indy #5 last week (I'm 54 year old) George Lucas and Steven Spielberg were already friends, and film-makers, and the tale goes that the week that Star Wars was released, the two men were on a vacation. Spielberg said that he wanted to direct a James Bond movie, someday, and Lucas countered that he had a better idea, about an Archeologist and his adventures. The scene where Indy shoots the Arabic swordsman -there was going to be a long fight between, Yet, as they filmed in Tunisia, and Harrison Ford, and others in the cast and crew had "issues" with the local food and water, Ford told Spielberg that he was not able to do much action, with the condition of Dysentary. So, Ford didn't soil himself -it was agreed to quickly ditch the fight, and shoot the warrior. This got laughter often in cinema, on home viewing, and from Yourself! The U-Boat, and the base were borrowed from the German film, "Das Boot" that was in production at the same time (filmed off France, where the still existing U-Boat base of Nazi Germany exists (I have visited) Seek the other films of Indy Jones out -generally fine adventures, over the years.
13:54 "Ooh -- His hand got _deeply_ burned." You may have missed it, but this is why the nazis were digging in the wrong place. They created a replica of the medallion based on this scar, but because of this they were only able to reproduce the side that had burned into his hand. The additional instructions inscribed into the other side of the original remained unknown to them.
Some other iconic Harrison Ford roles: "The Fugitive" (1993) based on a TV show, This movie has some iconic scenes that are often referenced and parodied, and the whole movie was parodied in the spoof "Wrongfully Accused" "K-19 The Widowmaker" (2002) based on real events, drama "Witness" (1985) mystery/suspense "Six Days, Seven Nights" (1998) comedy "Sabrina" (1995 remake) remake of an older film
Add to that one of my favorites, "The Frisco Kid" (1979), a Western comedy starring Ford and Gene Wilder. Wilder plays a Polish rabbi traveling to San Francisco in 1850. He gets robbed in New York, and seems to be stranded until he meets Ford, who agrees to accompany him across the country. But when Wilder discovers that Ford is a bank robber, he faces a conflict.
Thank you for sharing your reaction to this. You may be the first reactor I have encountered who recognized that the red knee tarantulas on their backs are harmless.
It's taught at a young age what spiders are deadly or not and it's usually the small/skinny but coloured ones that will kill ya not the big fluffy ones hehehe
@@MovieJoob When I was two and one half to four and one half years old we lived in rural Virginia. I am told that I would often come back to the house holding a spider, leading Mom to fear that I would be bitten by a black widow, whose bite can be serious.
The thing that I think summarizes Indy so much is when he says, "I don't know. I'm making this up as I go." He accomplishes so much with determination and luck.
Such a cute reaction to this beloved classic! Yes, watch part 2 and 3 too, they are fantastic! The Last Crusade is my personal favorite! You will have a lot of fun for sure. 😊
The showdown scene in Cairo initially called for a lengthy fight scene which would have taken 2-3 days to film. Harrison Ford was sick with dysentery at the time and instead proposed what we instead see, Spielberg agreed. It was unscripted, the stuntman had been practicing for the "big fight" only for it never to occur, yet it's probably one of the most famous scenes in Raiders and seems to fit perfectly well.
Yep, That's a kookaburra alright. American sound people started using them as a stand-in for monkey noises in the Tarzan TV show in the late 60s, and they've been using them ever since, in the solid opinion that no-one but Aussies would ever notice. In tons of old Hollywood movies, if you step two feet into a jungle, the kookaburras start cackling.
Hahaha it makes sense that non Aussies wouldn't notice cause they wouldn't have heard it before but I hear it every other week so I recognise it immediately! 😊 I looove kookaburras!
I just found your channel recently and subscribed immediately after watching the first reaction I saw, which was The Green Mile. In this one, right in the beginning, you said “definitely a kookaburra” (right after A bird sound effect) and it made me laugh because I was recently watching a documentary about motion picture sound effects and the kookaburra call is the most widely misused bird sound effect in movies and TV. They put it in movies that take place in South America (like the opening of this one), China, Africa, you name it… Anywhere where you’d never in your life see a kookaburra. I enjoy you reviews and completely relate to your empathy
Aww thank you so much for subscribing and joining me on another journey!! And yes hahaaha they use it for everything it's so funny. And aww thank you so incredibly much!
I actually watched through the Indiana Jones movies myself a few months ago. (Mostly in anticipation for the new one "Dial of Destiny.") Indiana Jones is my 3rd favorite Paramount movie series. (Number 2 is Mission Impossible and Number 1 is Transformers. Which, funny enough, both are getting new movies this year. "Rise of the Beasts" for Transformers and "Dead Reckoning: Part 1" for Mission Impossible. Counting Indiana Jones, that makes 3.)
"Raiders of the Lost Ark": An homage to cliffhanger movies of the 1930's, it had enough stunts for THREE Action movies of the era, second choice Harrison Ford created another movie icon, "two-fisted Marion Ravenwood" stood tall as Indy's equal, and a generation of college students were persuaded to "dig in the dirt" as now-Cool Archeologists.
Hahaha I'm so glad you enjoyed!! And yes, sadly the reliance on cgi has lead to so much less creativity! I would rather things look more 'staged' like a play but be cleverly filmed and creative than too much cgi to the point things look uncanny and busy!
Absolutely another great reaction. Jade I could never be bored in the slightest when coming along with you, your reactions are like a fine wine since they get better every time. If you and I were in snake pit, I would go to great lengths to make sure you got out first before I followed suit. I would very much like for the trilogy to continue, because it means I am getting to enjoy it with you. You are absolutely gorgeous and I absolutely adore you. Please don't stop being as great as you are
1:10 VERY old Hollywood trope. To Americans who grew up on Tarzan movies, a jungle just doesn't sound like a jungle without the sound of a kookaburra in it (which is ridiculous, of course, but in the early days of Hollywood they threw the sound effect in to make it sound "exotic" and it stuck).
I love this movie! Indiana Jones was my favorite movie series as a kid. Temple of Doom is probably the weakest in the trilogy, and the third one, the last crusade, is definitely the best. So glad you’re getting in to these, can’t wait to see the reaction for the others!
So sorry I'm 3 days behind watching this (have had it loaded up on my computer...but couldn't get to it). This WAS one of the iconic movies of my youth (I took one of my first dates to this movie). It's also amazing that they did do a significant amount of research regarding the handling of the Ark. This is and always will be a classic. The next in the initial trilogy isn't "bad"...but is certainly not as good as this. The 3rd movie rises to the enjoyment level of this one. The 4th (and apparently the 5th out now) can be ignored if needed. Thanks as always for an excellent review. Peace.
A kind reminder that the addition of “Indiana Jones and the…” as part of the title was introduced with the second and subsequent films. This one is just named “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
10:31 In this scene, Indy was supposed to fight the sabre guy. But Harrison was ill with fever and diarrhea during filming of this scene -- very unfit for a fight scene. So they decided he could just shoot sabre guy and be done with it instead.
Incredible movie and so much influence on Hollywood. Oh and the reason they had a headpiece with only one side is they made it from the burn scars on the one guy's hand!
I love Indiana Jones. My dad had me grow up on it. It’s one of my favorite franchises. I’m so glad you’re enjoying it. Sadly though, because I love this franchise, I don’t think I’ll like the new one. Would you be interested in playing one of the Indiana Jones games?
If/when you watch Temple of Doom, keep in mind that it's a prequel, with its events happening a year before those shown in Raiders of the Lost Ark. (Some first-time viewers miss this and so get confused by some of the character behaviors.)
Another great trilogy of action films is The Librarian movies with Noah Wiley. Quest For the Spear, Return to King Solomon's Mines and Curse of the Judas Chalice. He's not quite a "normal" librarian and the library is FAR from normal. There's 2 TV series spun off, The Librarians and Warehouse 13. Both are quite good.
Another star was born in this film, the guy at the beginning who tosses away the whip then gets spiked, is Alfred Molina, who played Doctor Octopus in Toby Maguires Spiderman.
Welcome to the greatest trilogy there is! (Yes, please, please, pretty please don't do it to yourself to watch the other two.) Going by your reaction to this one, you'll love the third one, but I'm curious to see how you like the second one which (for reasons I cannot quite comprehend) was a tad divisive. That, however, ended when the fourth one came out. ^^
Some people (I suspect many) don't like Willie Scott. I'm one of them, but I don't think it is Kate Capshaw's fault. I think she gave the performance her director asked of her. Nonetheless Willie is a weakness of the film to me. Short Round. Short Round is not a weakness of the film, he's amazing! But some people think he's silly. Some people don't like the darker themes, the darker tone. I'd list examples but I'm avoiding spoilers in case our girl MovieJoob reads the comments. I'm not one of them. I love it. Some people think the film is racist with its depictions of Indian culture. The film has depictions of the behaviour of a cult, not of Indian culture. If anything, the graceful behaviour of an impoverished and desperate village should be seen as more indicative of the actual surrounding culture. I don't agree with that one therefore. I love Temple of Doom. I do not love it as much as Raiders or Crusade. I try not to even think about any other Indy movies existing.
@@mattp6089some people understand why she was like that that it was a normal reaction from a normal character that has not done anything like that before
@@jamesmeechan6983 True! And she has an arc, and you can see where they wanted to take the character. But, my opinion, they dialled her up to eleven, and it was too far. When she punches the guy off the mining cart with everything she has at the end to protect Short Round, it should be a real redemption moment for her, but I think most people were already sick to death of Willie by then.
Trivia: The actor that portrays the Nazi commander who's face melts at the end is the same actor in Band of Brothers as a general who makes the speak after surrendering.
Every single human being is raised on the Christian studies and beliefs you are absolutely correct how silly of me 😄 Not a single other religion exists!
Actually, chronologically, this is the SECOND movie. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was set in 1936. The second movie made, "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" was set in 1935. This was so they could have a different leading lady.
Indiana Jones was the brainchild of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas when the pair were vacationing in Hawaii, with Lucas dipping out on the Star Wars premiere. Spielberg said he wanted to make a James Bond film as well as an homage to the action-adventure serials of their childhood. Most everyone got sick while filming in Tunisia. Spielberg only ate canned spaghetti he brought with him and taped his mouth shut when he showered to avoid getting sick. This led to Harrison Ford coming up with the idea of shooting the swordsman rather than fighting him with the whip. The U-Boat was borrowed from the production of Das Boot, while the sub pen is an original WWII one in La Rochelle, France. Paul Frees didn't actually eat the fly. A single frame was cut for fun, as it upped the intensity of the scene. None but the High Priest of Israel could touch the Ark, let alone open it, and he could only do so in Yom Kippur. I love the ending, as the US government has all of the most powerful historical and religious artifacts in the world dumped in a nondescript warehouse in the Nevada desert.
"A single frame was cut for fun, as it upped the intensity of the scene." Do you mean that the apparent eating of the fly was an inadvertent side effect of that cut, or that it was the purpose of the cut?
The Ark of the Covenant is a big part of the Jewish religious story. In the stories, God commanded Moses to build it to store the Ten Commandments and it accompanied the Israelites through the forty years in the desert. They believed it contained the power of God and used it as a totem in battle. Israel has a holy day to celebrate the Israelites crossing the Jordan river into Israel with the Ark. It was in Solomons Temple when Babylon destroyed Jerusalem and was never seen again. At the end of the film, Indy knows, probably from the book of Samuel not to look inside the ark as you may instantly die. There is also the belief that you cannot look directly upon God without dying, so he knows not to look at the angels destroying the Nazis.

What a great movie. Such films can't be made in today's times and that's very sad. I liked your radio to God joke a lot. 😂 Greetings from germany
Hahaha I'm so glad you enjoyed!! And yes, sadly the reliance on cgi has lead to so much less creativity! I would rather things look more 'staged' like a play but be cleverly filmed and creative than too much cgi to the point things look uncanny and busy!
Glad you've started on the Indy Trilogy, Jade.
Love your reactions to classic Hollywood movies.
I'm so glad you're enjoying!! Thank you for being on this ride with me!
Love your reactions jade! My favorite is the 3rd one The Last Crusade
Ooh I'm excited to get to it!!
Sallah played by John Rhys-Davies also played Gimli & voice of Treebeard in Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Fun fact the Egyptian character Sallah, Indies friend, is played by John Rhys-Davies also known as Gimli
Please don't stop being as great as you are
I saw this movie in the theater with my family when it came out back in the day. Great memories
There are 4 sequels, the first two are continuations, the latter two (one is currently in theaters) are epilogues.
The fourth one is watchable but not in the same league. The fifth is apparently pure garbage and not worth watching.
I find it so funny! 😂 I love kookaburras so I'm happy to hear them anywhere
I also started the series a few days ago! I’m on the 3rd one right now :)
Oh hell yeah!! We're on this ride together!
I heard there was a deleted or unfilmed scene that explained how Indy knew to not look at the Ark's power.
It's semi Biblical. A normal person cannot look at God and survive.
Hi Jade you will ❤ the Indiana Jones movies. Hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Thank you so much John!! ❤️
Yes! I love this movie! Indiana Jones is even from my hometown lol.
Oh that's so awesome!!
I love this movie! Indiana Jones was my favorite movie series as a kid. Temple of Doom is probably the weakest in the trilogy, and the third one, the last crusade, is definitely the best. So glad you’re getting in to these, can’t wait to see the reaction for the others!
Hello Jade, sorry I have missed some of your reactions but I’m back now, and this has to be one of my favorite sagas in cinema history
That's okay! Welcome back! And I'm so glad you enjoy these films. I can't wait to react to the others!
As always great fun reaction. The next movie takes place prior to this one. The third then continues after this .... ❤
Thank you so much! So glad you had fun too! and ooh exciting!! ❤️
15:55 ... think you are
But you think too much
Shut down, turn around
Don't look that way anymore 🎶
1 and 3 is how to do it
4 and 5 is how not to do it
So sorry I'm 3 days behind watching this (have had it loaded up on my computer...but couldn't get to it).
Omg well it was comedic genius and I loved it!!
Incredible movie and so much influence on Hollywood. Oh and the reason they had a headpiece with only one side is they made it from the burn scars on the one guy's hand!
Love the reactions to your content, thanks for sharing 😊🙏👍✌️🇺🇸😊
Aww thank you so much I'm so glad!!
Thank you for watching! 😊
I love Indiana Jones. My dad had me grow up on it. It’s one of my favorite franchises. I’m so glad you’re enjoying it. Sadly though, because I love this franchise, I don’t think I’ll like the new one. Would you be interested in playing one of the Indiana Jones games?
11:40 “God what the heck?! Over…” 😂🤣
That's the first thing I'd say if I had a radio to god tbh. 😂😂
8:05
Can't read my, can't read my, no he can't read my poker face. :D
0:47 Just the Trilogy... you've made many Indy fans very happy 😊 It's been 15 years and I still have nightmares full of bad CGI monkeys! 😫
I'm surprised you didn't recognize GIMLI
HE LOOKS SO DIFFERENT AND TALL PLS DONT BLAME ME 😂😂
@@MovieJoob Well, at least now you know. You will see him again😜
If/when you watch Temple of Doom, keep in mind that it's a prequel, with its events happening a year before those shown in Raiders of the Lost Ark. (Some first-time viewers miss this and so get confused by some of the character behaviors.)
Inside the Ark was except for the stone tablets Aarons rod and a jar of manna.
The relics did burn on the ship to keep them away.
“God what the heck. Over” 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Straight up the first thing I'd ask if I had a radio to god
Indie Jones 1 is such a classic movie!!
I now understand why!!
You maybe noticed that René also pretended to be drunk?
He said that he grew up on that, that it was his family label.
Trivia: The actor that portrays the Nazi commander who's face melts at the end is the same actor in Band of Brothers as a general who makes the speak after surrendering.
I had no idea that is so cool!!!
@@MovieJoob - He's actually the one whose head shrinks as opposed to the one whose face melts, but that's a minor nitpick. :)
Great job! watch ALL THREE!!!! ( cause seriously there are only THREE. Trust me on this. ) There will only ever be THREE.
Looks like Black Cat from Spiderman reacting to Indy for the first time. 😄💜💜
THIS IS THE HIGHEST COMPLIMENT I COULD CRY THANK UUU 😭😭❤️❤️
@@MovieJoob You're always welcome.
There already was a female indiana jones "Relic Hunter" with tia carrere was a tv series.. my gf loved it :D
The mN who plays Sallah is the same actor who plays Gimli in The Lord of The Rings
The German army officer in the movie is the same actor who plays the German general in episode 10 of Band of Brothers.
No frikkin way!! Seriously! wow!!
Remember, there was no CGI. The truck scene had a real stuntman get dragged on the ground underneath the vehicle.
"I've never heard of these stories before" It's from the Bible my heathen child
Every single human being is raised on the Christian studies and beliefs you are absolutely correct how silly of me 😄 Not a single other religion exists!
Thanks, Jade! 🧭 #MovieJoob #IndianaJones #StevenSpielberg #RaidersOfTheLostArk #IndianaJonesAndTheRaidersOfTheLostArk
Thank you as always @auntvesuvi3872 !! ❤️
My pleasure! I hope you'll enjoy all the installments in this series; they're good.
The melting Nazi faces is an awesome practical effect
So brilliantly done! It literally holds up well to this day!
There are only 3 Indy films, there will only ever be three and all three are fantastic.
Enjoyed your reaction. This Indy movie is the first and the best, IMO. 😊
I'm so glad you enjoyed!! 😊
@@MovieJoob So what's next?
Belloq was also feigning being drunk.
The melting faces were Jello molds that melted in the heat.
Conan O'Brien had Harrison Ford on his podcast as Harrison is doing his press junket for the latest Indiana Jones.
Those spiders, I believe that they are males because females are more aggressive according to their handlers.
The best of the series
Actually, chronologically, this is the SECOND movie. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was set in 1936. The second movie made, "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" was set in 1935. This was so they could have a different leading lady.
But the storylines are independent of each other so the order doesn’t matter.
That movie I think very love it!❤️
Classic!!!!!
Better late than never, good job Jade!
I got to it eventually!! hehehe!
"A single frame was cut for fun, as it upped the intensity of the scene."
Do you mean that the apparent eating of the fly was an inadvertent side effect of that cut, or that it was the purpose of the cut?
