- Giselle, originally titled Giselle, ou les Wilis, is a romantic ballet in two acts with music by Adolphe Adam. Considered a masterwork in the classical ballet performance canon, it was first performed by the Ballet du Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique at the Salle Le Peletier in Paris, France on 28 June 1841, with Italian ballerina Carlotta Grisi as Giselle. The ballet was an unqualified triumph. Giselle became hugely popular and was staged at once across Europe, Russia, and the United States.
Librettists Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Théophile Gautier took their inspiration for the plot from a prose passage about the Wilis in De l'Allemagne, by Heinrich Heine, and from a poem called "Fantômes" in Les Orientales by Victor Hugo.
Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot created the original choreography. The role of Giselle was intended for Carlotta Grisi as her debut piece for the Paris public, and she was the only ballerina to dance it at the Paris Opera for many years. The traditional choreography that has been passed down to the present day derives primarily from the revivals staged by Marius Petipa during the late 19th and early 20th centuries for the Imperial Ballet in St. Petersburg. One of the world's most-often performed classical ballets, it is also one of its most challenging to dance.

Giselle is a very iconic Ballet, a Romantic ballet. To dance this iconic Ballet today, I believe, that the Ballerina must put certain elements aside, such as the too high leg and delve further into the history in order to understand fully what she is about to interpret.. This is not a technical Ballet as we think of technique today but at the same time like other Ballets of this time , they are technically perhaps more difficult because, they call for a very refined technique on pointe, and a purity of movement, difficult to find today, details sometimes forgotten. It takes a very special type of Artist to bring out the true meaning of the role of Giselle.
Novikova, Osmolkina, and Shirinkina were the standouts to me. Very different interpretations that felt equally authentic.
My favorite (at least for the Mad Scene) has always been, and still is, Natalia Makarova. Of any Giselle I've seen to date, she seemed to create the most effective "madness", both in terms of acting and technical dancing combined. All of these dancers, of course, are great in their own rights. But I haven't seen the level of Makarova.
In my opinion, Makarova is the greatest Giselle. Of this group I liked Tereshkina, Osmolkina and Vishneva the most. Most of the others were good or quite good, while a few, such as Nagahisa and Khoreva, need more time to develop their interspretations.
Let's not forget the late, great Carla Fracci.
Nadezhda Batoeva! 😭
Все хороши, но самая трогательная Нагахиса.
Сомова и Новикова.
Maria Khoreva is no Giselle. How can a RUclips girl like Khoreva express these deep feelings as Giselle has
agree
skorik is frankly awful alas
I don’t know how any of them can be judged ‘awful’ when all are principals or soloists at Mariinsky!
@@fairlyvague82 because the director fateyev is a moron and this is the reason why garbage as skorik askerov and parrish are principals in mariinsky
