An extra tite reaction 🔧💸 ! It is a very critical thinking soulful song speaking on a universal real life issue that anyone can relate with. I see 👁👁 that you have reacted to Simply Red before: Holding Back The Years and Stars. Money's Too Tight (To Mention) was released as the second single from Simply Red's 1991 album: Stars. The song was written by John Valentine and William Valentine. It was produced by Stewart Levine. The song reached #2 on the Dance chart, #28 on the Hot 100 and #13 on the UK Singles chart. The music video was directed by Tony Van Den Ende. The song was originally recorded by The Valentine Brothers in 1982. The song was featured in the 2002 film 📽: 24 Hour Party People.
The song is about a guy going through some tough times financially, but getting no help from friends, family, or the bank. Many people would love to help, but are in the same position he is. America was going through a recession at the time, which triggered the song's lyric. "Our overall objective was to bring messages in our music that were in tune with what's going down today", Billy Valentine said. "That's certainly what's happened with 'Money's Too Tight'".
The Valentine Brothers had been through some financial hardship that helped inspire the lyric. When they moved from Ohio to Los Angeles, they had trouble getting a good job in the industry, so they took a lot of club gigs. They hooked up with the touring production of The Wiz in 1977 as musicians and understudies (Billy for The Wiz, John for the Tin Man). When the production closed in 1979, they once again struggled to make ends meet. Their first, self-titled, album was released later that year, and three years later their album: First Take, featuring the song: "Money's Too Tight", was issued.
In The Valentine Brothers original song, they mention "Reaganomics", which is the term for then US president Ronald Reagan's economic policies. Instead of altering the line, Simply Red doubled down on the Ronald Reagan bashing, with Mick Hucknall repeating these lines at the end of the song: We're talking about Ronnie Ronnie / Did the earth move for you Nancy?
The song lyric: Nancy, is a reference to then US president Ronald Reagan's wife, then first lady Nancy Reagan.
    Simply Red Info 📰:
Simply Red are a British Soul and Pop band formed in Manchester in 1985. The initial Simply Red line-up consisted of Mick Hucknall (vocals), David Fryman (guitar), Tony Bowers (bass), Fritz McIntyre (keyboards and vocals), Tim Kellett (brass and live backing vocals) and Chris Joyce (drums). The band is led by singer and songwriter Mick Hucknall, as lead singer and core member of Simply Red, he became the identifiable face of the band. His face and long curly red hair were featured prominently on album artwork and in videos. The Simply Red's lead singer: Mick Hucknall, was in a Punk band called "The Frantic Elevators" before founding the group Simply Red.
Since the release of their debut studio album: Picture Book (1985), they have had ten songs reach top 10 in the UK Singles Chart, including their signature song: "Holding Back The Years", and the 1972 Harold Melvin And The Blue Notes cover song: "If You Don't Know Me By Now", both of which reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. They have had five number one albums in the UK, with their 1991 album: Stars, being one of the best-selling albums in UK chart history.
