Periphery w/ Chris Barretto - THE WALK

- Waaaaaaaaay better than the album version. Personally I liked Chris-era Periphery a lot more than current Periphery. But to Spencer's credit he improved his low range to where he can be practically as br00tal as Chris now.
All credit for this goes to Periphery and Chris Barretto. Chris is now in the bands Friend For A Foe and Ever Forthright, check them out. If you want a high quality download of this or other Periphery demos, go to Bulb's soundclick page.

Matt Halpern still has the deepest V on LOL
these boys have nothing on mr Vpern
Damn, I didn't know Eric Andre used to be in the band! :D
Yeah he was.... Monumental dohoho
Gees guys, save some pussy for the rest of us
Underrated comment XD
Chris has become one of my favourite underground vocalist. The dude is so bloody talented! Wish he didn't have to leave Monuments. It's a shame he's no longer doing music :/
He isn’t into music anymore??
@@adityachakravarthy nah, even after his departure he’s still worked with haunted shores (misha and Mark’s side project), working as vocals.
@@speeddemonji9547 glad to hear it
who told you he's not doing music? His instagram says differently
I had no clue Monuments and Periphery had a connection.
That is so awesome.
john browne filled in a whole tour for jake bowen a couple years ago. and mike malyan filled in for halpern a bit during a european tour last year.
John Browne was actually considered to join Periphery when Alex Bois left.
chris also was the vocalist for the haarp machine after mike left
Chris is also the vocalist of Ever Forthright. :)
@@YoLpIsBest Alex was fired, he didn't leave. Would you leave Periphery?
Would have been pretty sick hearing Spencer on Cleans and Chris on uncleans in today’s lineup.
just listened to some of their songs with casey and I love both their growls so much more than spencer. Deeper and more gutteral. Would be perfect if Spencer just did the cleans like you said.
The dream team. Too bad chris is an asshole...allegedly
@@boobiemiles7735 damn so many comparisons yeah we get it already. Nothing wrong with Spencer's cleans or screams I think. He just has a higher voice then Chris and Casey.
Chris Barreto is incredible, his Michael Jackson style singing and Corey Taylor growls is an incredible fit for any modern metal band.
whats up with the youhooth
I found the outro very informative.
This still absolutely fucks my face off in 2021
now I know why P1 had such weird sounding screams. Makes sense that spencer was trying to imitate a vocal style he isn't used to using rather than using his technique like on subsequent albums.
I always thought Spencer's vocals sounded the best on Periphery 1.
@@TheBallinCollin96 You're definitely in the minority there, consensus is that he was way worse there. Me personally, I don't mind his performance so much, but that it just didn't sound like Spencer.
Chris is a killing vocalist though and I love his work in Monuments. Insane voice. Makes me wonder what Periphery would've sounded like if he wasn't a bitch to work with and was able to stay with them the whole way.
@@beidouvirus3978 Idk, it sounds more raw and powerful to a lot of other people. When he sings at volume it still sounds good, but the whispery nasally Disney thing he does sometimes is ugly. Like, Spence, you're a grown straight man in a metal band and it's not 2008 🤣
@@TheBallinCollin96 Yeah the bad lyrics and vocal melodies totally turn me off from the new Periphery albums.
@@TheBallinCollin96 I'm with ya dude the cleans sounded very raw, every album since has been slightly nasally, tho on P V he seems to have grown quite a bit since P 4
Damn he sounds so much like Jens Kidman it's sick.
When mastered, fry screams sound fucking insane.
Imagine if they re-did P1 with current Spencer's vocals
Would be an improvement for sure.
Spencer has improved tenfold, but when it comes to screams...Chris has still got it on lock.
I Like Chris' growl/screaming parts more. They sound a little more brutal. but clean vocals, spencer wins hands down.
Dunno, if you listen to The Amanuensis by Monuments, Chris absolutely destroys at both the cleans and br00talz.
flagmuffin1221 Listen to LIGHT - PERIPHERY, it's not my opinion. And now, you can check "OMEGA" out. Spencer's cleans are better.
flagmuffin1221 I talked about Chris' version of Light :)
Teddy Marquise It's still your opinion bro lol At the time these songs were written (5 years ago) Chris definitely wasn't as strong with his cleans but dude is on the same level now.
Teddy Marquise Chris Barretto is every bit as good as Spencer Sotelo in every bit of singing.
Objectively, Spencer's growls are a lot more raw, much like Matt Rose off of Monument's first album. His cleans are very good, but much more like a poppish, metalcore-ish way. His cleans aren't bad at all, I love everything about his singing, it's just the objective style of his singing I'm describing.
Chris Barretto's growls are much more like Satan himself, powerful, deep, intense. A different style to Spencer. His cleans are also slightly poppish but have more ambience.
I love both singers equally, and I'll go through phases of loving one over the other because I become obsessed with a particular song (The Bad Thing vs. Quasimodo for instance).
Imagine Chris’ vocals on ragnarok.....
This is also with Travis Orbin on drums. You can tell because he does that quintuplet bass drum thing at 3:25.
Is it just me or does he also do some… bass flams (?!) after that
I'm only here for Misha's sideburns
Wait so the monuments guy was in periphery first?!?
It was originally Jake Veredika who started some vocals on some of the tracks that never remotely made it to the album. Then came Casey Sabol who basically set the ground for vocals on the entire album. Once Casey departed, Chris took over for the vocal recordings. There are still a few tracks with some lyrical lines/melodies from both Casey and Chris that made it into the album and since the album never released with Chris's vocals, the band decided to keep most of what was already there, re-record and re-do some of the vocal lines and make the album into the one we know today. There are still a few faint hints of the others like a melody with Chris's voice in the song 'Light' close to the start of the song, Casey's "I see light" at the end of 'Racecar', and I believe that some of Jake's lyrics from 'Zyglrox' were kept but the song almost completely redone vocally, along with a few harmonies across the album that Spencer lined up with the other vocalists melodies. Long story, but the album is a complex kinda 'mash-up' of about 4 vocalists, 4 guitarists, 2 bassists, and one drummer. I honestly do not believe there will ever be another album that could ever go through that much processing, mixing, and re-recording as this one did. In honesty, the final result is probably the best result it could've been.
But to answer your question, yes. Chris came before Spencer.
Damn, Chris owns Spencer bigtime when it comes to growls.
11 years changed a LOT, other way around now.. but if Chris had kept going it would prob be the same. Different styles, though.
Gaagagagagaa
even tho this sounds brutal and great, spencers melodies and harmonic singing is a staple for me with this band. i doubt they would get so much exposure without him.
Matt still wearing V-necks
I listened to a bit of Periphery (i.e. a mate sent me Icarus Lives! and Jetpacks Was Yes) and I thought it was pretty good.
Then I stumbled upon this.
Honestly, the first minute is the best introduction to any song I think I've ever heard.
Very Meshuggahish inspired vocals.. Probably why Misha decided to go with Spencer.
yeh, Chris was apparently a bit of a dick.
Apparently, to what Misha and Chris have said, they just could be around each other for too long. Probably one of those conflicting personalities kind of situation. Allegedly no hard feelings.
Your allegation makes no sense because misha loves meshuggah. It's his favorite band haha
This is quality, chris barretto will always be a fucking sick vocalist. He did a great job for the Haarp Machine on their latest tour with BoO
no matter what vocalist this band has, they are still crazy
SO FUCKING BRUTAL
Chris brought out the best in this band in my opinion. D: I miss him.
i just wanted the growl at the beginning of the song on the album
Chris has joined Monuments now - fantastic band, worth a listen.
Glad spencer added some freshness to this band years ago. This Cat has just got luck on his side, thus getting him some serious good gigs with bands over the years as well. However not that FABULOUS
Gear Gods intro!
Side show bob was in periphery?
💀😂
Chris's screams and growls definitely have the edge on Spencer's, but there are few who can beat Spender's cleans.
The ending
Eh. I don't care what anyone says...I listened to Periphery for a long time before I even HEARD that they had different previous vocalists (Casey and Chris) I'm so used to hearing Spencer that I just grew to love how he sounds. I mean, Casey and Chris are both awesome, don't get me wrong. I just prefer Spencer.
2019
Whhhaaaaaattttt!! This version rules! Spencer who? dangit...
Holy hell, I only recognize two of these people. Band went through some heavy changes, I suppose. Also, the instruments aren't nearly as good sounding on this version. Vocals are better, but I bet Spencer kills this now.
Yeah. They overhauled the band a lot from the first demos to now. They have gone through numerous line-up changes over the years.
Misha, Jake, and Matt are the only three in this photo that are still in the band. Obviously Chris left in 2010, and Alex Bois and Tom Murphy left in 2011, to be replaced with Mark Holcomb and Nolly.
Lukas Lawler R.I.P. Nolly
Yeah this song does sound way better than the album, chris makes it so brutal.
Anyone know if you can find the other songs from this album with barrettos vocals? I know this one and the light are out there. Any others?
There's a short demo clip of Letter Experiment with Chris on vocals which used to be on MySpace and their cover of Black or White. Misha said there are some demos with Chris "...which weren't worth using" a few years ago. We'd have to harass Misha to release those demos for them to be heard. He also removed every demo of Chris off SoundClick.
So much better compared to Spencer's version.
I need to see more duet vocals like vildjharta’s album first masstaden, imagine spencer with the high screams and chris with lows
Hahahaha, Jake's hair.
WE MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARCHHHHHHHHHHHH
BALLS
personally i think this is the most brutal song from periphery
dejaron hermann
Marc Holcomb, guitar
Misha mansoor (bulb, haunted shores) lead guitar
Chris Barretto (ex-periphery, ex-friend for a foe, now in monuments) Singer
Matt Halpern (ex-animals as leaders) drum
Alex Bois (ex-periphery) guitar
Tom Murphy (ex-periphery) bass
Pierre Simonetti That's not Mark, it's Jake
sorry ^^'
I think that Misha plays the drums in this song, because doesn't sound like Matt grooves, and in one video in the channel of Misha of the 2nd show of Periphery you can see Misha playing the drums.
+JoelMetal That's definitely not Misha. If anything he just programmed the parts recorded by Travis Orbin.
i love spencer but this is the best version of this song. That ending is the greatest thing ever
@PrecursorOfficial I understand your concern. I just said that on reports that I've heard before.
Im like 98.45678% sure this is Travis Orbin on drums, not Matt Halpern as the picture suggests. Correct me if I'm wrong
Chris was the perfect voice for this band.
I'm so used to spencer now
@NoaOno Not really. It's just some nice annunciation; which is what vocalists should have.
And Chris is still rocking the fro, but with Ever Forthright now.
Not gonna lie, this is great. I love Spencer though. So much passion.
I wish chris was still in the haarp machine
DOWN7UNED thank you! Everyone is commenting about monuments but forgot he was in the haarp machine. Great fucking band too
what about Ever Forthright ;)
I wish Sp0nce has the cleans of Chris (or at least like the cleans on the first album). Everything since then has been bitch-toned. I don't like "highschool cheerleader" inflections and cadence. All in all though, Periphery will always be one of my fav bands.
dude Spencer's voice was godawful prior to periphery ii the fuck are you on lol
The vocal melodies on the first album are interesting. After that I compare Spencers vocal style and melodies to Britney Spears. And I prefer Britney.
brunnlake exactly. They are too poppy and whiney. Still love the band though.
Omni Codex Too poppy and whiney? I always enjoy when people say that, Spencer has a diverse sense of music, he has a lot of influences and it does't reside in just pop, there are a variety of styles he shows in the music, though there are many, many more elements you seem to leave out.
Whiney? that's his vocal range, and it's not just high pitched.
facebook.com/misha.mansoor/videos/10153782425884533/?permPage=1
I recommend actually getting involved with the bands multiple sides of music before criticizing the 'style' of one of the musicians and ignorantly implying you know what you're saying.
***** I *do* know what I'm saying, because it's my opinion. Yes, I've listened to all of Spencer's other bands. His poppy vocals are the same. It's the inflections, that's all. Jason Cameron from Bury Tomorrow is a good example of what I'm talking about. He sings, but with no Brittany Spears inflections.
Like I've said multiple times now, this isn't something that ruins the band for me. They're one of my favorite bands of all time. Stop being such a butthurt fanboy.
@vdjn55 They had a bunch of reasons, saw it on their channel at one point.
I've listened to a couple of tracks off of the new album, and I agree there is definitely an improvement there no doubt, but I think it's worth listening to more to decide, so challenge accepted.
Chris is a fing beast sorry spence but he wins
Love the fucking kick drums on 0:37
After hearing this Ive concluded that Chris's voice hasnt aged as well as spencers.
hmm i dont think so. as spencer said himself to remember that metal started with singing. my favorite bands incorporate a mix of screamig and singing but i do like bands that do one or the other as well.
@PrecursorOfficial We must just have completely different ears and hear things differently, because I haven't seen a Periphery video where Chris sounded good at all. And I really haven't seen one where Spencer sounded bad.
If you listen to Spencer's most recent vocals, they kick the fuck out of Chris's. Spencer ftw.
@blueburnsred Why do you think that? Because you read some off hand comments Bulb made about him? Ask the bands CB is currently in now, they'll tell you much different. And find me one video where Spencer Sotelo could actually make it on stage live to sing better than Chris, because personally, I haven't found one. I'm not saying he can't, but so far, I haven't seen a Periphery show better than when Chris was involved. Same goes for the music itself.
this is heat
Porque sacaron ese tema de Spotify?
Jakie-poo with emo hair, i love it!❤
he's the new Jens fuckin' Kidman yo.
This version is so much better
Anytime :)
can you name these guys from left to right plz?
n0pe Jake Bowen, Misha Mansoor, Chris Baretto, Matt Halpern, Alex Bois, and Tom Murphy.
Yeah, they're sick as fuck. Chris was a damn boss, that's for sure.
Hey Chris are you the son of Ray Barretto Salsa?
He is
Its very strange hearing this, after fully getting into the song via the album with spencer on vocals. I love them both for different reasons, but they're just plain different vocalists. Chris does sound mega brutal, but i certainly didnt get into periphery just because of bulb alone. I know his name is Misha, but i've been sucked into the alias-porthole. But yeah, both suited somewhat for the band, and who gets sick of spencer's voice by the end of the album? Not me.
Yooo i like this better than from the debut album
Knowing Mark's policy on 7 strings, don't let him see your comment, haha.
4:34
Click it!
Chris Barretto owns this song just like Casey owned the fuck out of Icarus Lives.
Anyone know where to find a HQ mp3 of this version?
this is good but in my humble oopinion, Spencer's nails it
Why does Misha look like Jermaine Clement in this photo
@AndyAngelZ The only song that even comes close is Frak the Gods imo.
towards the middle it sounds identical to spencer... kind of weird honestly lmao
where can I get this?
Fuck I wish this guy was still in the band, I found out about these guys by listening to this particular version of this song, they would be fucking worlds better with this dude still in the band.
Get Chris Baretto doing scream and Casey Sabol doing clean vocals, Periphery would be awesome
they arent programmed they were played by matt on an electronic kit
This band so was so good with Chris. New scene singer can blow me...I'll even give him 10 dollars.
Was the challenge beaten?
I think the growlig vocals are a little beter here, but noone beats Spencer's clean vocals!
Dat ending quote
Programmed or not, this is Travis' drum version.
Dude, This Chris Barretto guy looks like Sideshow bob O.O
Is no one going to _even fucking mention _*_Jake?_*
No. Literally no one wants to mention Jake.
HardCountered Hey, had to ask. Just love his hot topic look.
Weirdly enough yes..
so much better o_o
This version absolutely shits all over the redo. My goodness.
Honestly it's because the contrast in vocals just works with this kind of music. It's nothing new...
hes voice is fucking brutal, but i like the vocal dynamics and delivery of jakes version better
