On Scene: FDNY Engine 65 and Ladder 4 Extinguish Ice Cream Truck Fire in Midtown Manhattan, NYC

  • A soft serve ice cream truck, parked on the side of the road, caught on fire due to engine problems. The fire grew for approximately 5 minutes prior to being extinguished by responding FDNY members from Engine 65 and Ladder 4. This incident occurred at approximately 16:35 hrs on the SE corner of E 50th St. and 6th Ave. in the Midtown area of Manhattan, NYC. I personally believe this is karma for charging $10+ for a sundae, plus extra for toppings.

    The firefighters were wearing the SCBA but it would have been great to see them actually using them
    The IAFF is always bitching about safety but support these types of operations and then file suit because the department didn't enforce OSHA and NFPA standards
    What a joke

      @@warren6891you clearly have no concept on fire fighting at all. You talk about technology when technology has nothing to do with it. From the time that video showed the fire it took them less than a minute and a half to get water onto the truck. You have to completely stretch a hose line. Then once that is done the driver goes to the side of the engine or truck and pulls a lever that brings water pressure into the hose. Only then can you start spraying water. I hope that was simple enough for you to understand. Also they're in the middle of this city where water wastage / usage is no issue

      @@jayp7171 There were several things in the video that could have been tweaked to do better. One of the biggest ones I noticed was the lack of SCBA's being utilized. I also would like to point out that, if you have dirty gear, your cancer risk increases significantly. Wearing dirty gear also poses a SIGNIFICANT safety risk to you. If you got done with a fire and lets say there was lots of chemicals burning like gasoline.. Your gear will break down after time if you don't get that nasty stuff washed off. And if the chemical you got on your gear didn't wash off, it also now has the protentional to catch your gear on fire. Dirty gear contaminated with other hazards, can also react to the next call you run... So yeah, I think I'm going to wash my gear after every call like NFPA requires. I'm curious as to what kind of training you have.

    I imagine the huge response is due perhaps to how hard it can be to deploy resources navigating the crowded streets of NYC but also perhaps because of a default assumption to anticipate exposure problems with nearby buildings. Just a random theory from someone with no formal training. But even as an amateur I cringe at the lack of masks in of all places NYC. Then later when these guys get sick they'll sue saying it wasn't their responsibility. It's someone else's obligation to force them to protect their lungs...

    • @BLAB-it5un
      @BLAB-it5un 10 месяцев назад +3

      @@deew_knird_reeb_ekomS Thanks for proving my point. They DO need them. At that moment. Because some of them will get cancer or lung disease and die later in life for not having put the mask on at this fire and many others because in the moment it seemed unneeded and inconvenient. But then don't sue later on when you get sick. But this is precisely what many of them do. So, yes, on a certain level it's a judgement call when outdoors, when the fire is relatively contained, when the "hassles" and costs of switching out bottles is factored in etc. But again unionized members of many of these departments are being sued claiming someone needed to force them to wear a mask. And where I am there are squads whose sole responsibility is to rotate the bottles. And on most fire grounds there are relief crews that step in while the bottles are switched out. Time consuming and costly sure. More expensive? Sure. Unnecessary perhaps? Maybe. But again the few that get sick later should then simply keep quiet. Happy to hear alternative reasoning

      Too many resources in a city of 8 million where we're the number one terrorist target in the country? It was 2 companies, an engine to fight the fire and a truck to protect the men and women stretching the line from being run over from behind in the heavy and crazy traffic you see. We lost one FF years ago crushed on a highway from behind by a car, then 2 others from a Rescue Company hit from behind and pinned against their rig, losing their legs in the process, so the policy is to send a second rig to protect the men. And with all the high-rise occupants surrounding them in, they often get multiple calls from the hi-rise saying they smell smoke in the building, hence a chief sometimes responds depending on the call. So the bottom line is after 200 years of firefighting, they kinda have figured it out.
