As an introvert myself, it’s admirable. My wife and I smiled at “socially stunted but what are you gonna do”. I don’t know, overthink? 😂 You’re very good at this, and the mic setup sounds like you’d be good at podcasts as well. Good job man, can’t wait for the next one.
Can I just say, I VASTLY prefer your content without your "TV voice" or cadence. Your material is all fantastic, to the point and insightful and I find the packaged voice a little distracting. So glad you enjoyed our fair city! (I'm pretty sure Proud Mary is Australia-based, and therefore less representative of Portland coffee, but maybe being an international coffee hub is actually very "Portland." Lots of special independent coffee shops here. Hope you can come back soon!)
These kinds of natural videos will always be preferable, but most of his content is reviews and guides/breakdowns, and it’s better to have a script for those. Otherwise you end up getting 30 minutes of rambling. I like that he keeps his reviews/guides concise and focused, but that obviously comes with more of a performance feel.
I get these kinds of comments somewhat frequently about my voice and cadence, but what Annyong31 said is 100% correct. When it comes to just waxing about something without any particular context, angle, or end goal is very easy for me. But when it comes to my review, tutorial, or other very linear or focused content having a script allows me to keep things clean, tight and avoids things feeling like they’re dragging. On top of that, with how my brain works starring into a camera alone in a room just makes my mind go blank. So a script keeps me on track. Proud Mary is Aussie based, and I didn’t get as much of a chance to try out Portland based stuff as much as I wanted, but I really enjoyed my time there and want to plan a return trip without so much of my time spent in a loud room of salespeople. That Alberta Arts District area was great.
Thanks for all the work, going out there solo to make some new connections and bring your viewers even more great content. So many exciting machines on the horizon. Are you planning to try to get your hands on a meticulous? Would love your thoughts on that machine once it becomes available.
I was in a meetup once a long time ago and let's just say that you're not the only one who can feel socially stunted, especially when you actually meet people for the first time who you're used to see online. It's a disconnecting experience yet nevertheless exciting to be around and meet everyone. Also Timemore has seriously expanded their reach beyond the infamy of their Black Mirror scales. Their hand grinders feel like just yesterday but already are they elbowing into the mainstream grinder market. Time will tell if their brand will rub shoulders with other veterans of the coffee world.
Yeah, I already wasn’t the most social creature before Covid, but after it hasn’t gotten any better haha. And for sure. Timemore has really leveled up. Their hand-grinders are nice, and I have the Black Mirror 2 and it’s pretty solid, but the Sculptor line is definitely going to give the big guys a run for their money.
Would love to see you review the Breville Dual Boiler mated with the Breville Smart Grinder Pro. That's been my set up for over 5 years now. I've considered more expensive, Italian or German made machines but have my Breville combo so well dialled and producing consistently good shots, it represents incredible value for money IMO.
Hello Spro! Grate and honest video, I totally get the overwhelming feeling of being recognized in person, it can be a bit shocking sometimes that so many folks know you, Happens to me even though I don't have as many subscribers ha ha... I would love the see the ES.1 and YOU the most. by the way, Shad is an awesome person, didn't know you are family :) All the best from the Bay Area -Y
I think an espresso macchiato or Cortado are my go-to. Gives you a good idea of the espresso flavor and quality, on top of their milk steaming ability.
I used to live in Portland & now I live in Seattle ....so sad to see that the same thing that happened to Seattle when it became "America's coffee capital" is happening to Portland now that it has become "America's NEW coffee capital (my humble opinion). To many people, too much traffic, etc. Maybe I'm getting old!
On the breville topic, the dual boiler was a strong standing a few years ago in nearly every review. I wonder how the back then highly praised machine would stack up in a comparison in todays market (same or similar pricepoint)
Cable management ❤ Huge thumbs up for that travel montage, it really did work well, despite being "quick and dirty" thanks to the good editing. Good inspiration !
pregnancy and alcohol do not mix sign I saw suggesting this coffee bar also sold coffees with alcohol which If I may ask did you try...Yes I checked the menu they do have coffee Cocktails
Did you see and spring lever machines at the show ? I dont know if the Argis is a spring machine or not, howevwr i was under the impression that its not a spring machine. Thanks
I didn’t see it, not even sure if it was there. I was so focused on connecting with espresso machine folks that some of the filter stuff sort of fell off my radar.
I did get a chance to quickly check it out, didn’t get a shot of coffee from it. At the time the booth was pretty crowded. But I’m in talks with them to get one to demo, but it’s looking like it won’t be ready for international export until the Fall.
Hi, it would be great to see a review of Breville Oracle/Oracle Touch. Is this machine a way to go for people that wants to have great coffee at home, but are not so interested in getting into coffee so much? Is integrated grinder good enough to get great and consistent shots?
Coming from a Flair 58 for the last year and a half and really like it, but now want a Linea Micra for my new home. Do you recommend this machine at all or what do you prefer in that price range that is not a Decent or an E61 Group please. Thank You!!
Personally, I love the look and overall performance of the Micra, but in that price range I could never see myself choosing it over the Lelit Bianca. It’s control and build quality is top notch.
If you're coming from a Flair 58 (and not in a hurry to get your machine), the upcoming Meticulous Home and Odyssey Argos are both coming in at fairly market-disruptive prices. Otherwise 4k is kind of a difficult number for a new machine. Most options are still E61 unfortunately, because we get crazy upcharges here in North America on most European machines. If I am to make an E61 recommendation like Sprometheus, I would suggest a VBM Domobar Super (either the Digital or Electronic model). The digital costs the same as the Bianca here in North America but has touchscreen-programmable 7 stage time based pressure profiles that it can run from its rotary pump automatically. (And since it's E61, I suppose you could install manual flow control too)
Did you happen to stop by the Kaffelogic booth? Did you see any other novel home roasting machines? I’ve had my Nano 7 for just a few weeks, and, having used a popcorn popper, cast iron, cheap blowers, and a Behmore drum machine, this is the first home roaster that I’ve used that doesn’t feel like a kluge, and isn’t big, and overkill either. It took me a bit to find the right starting point, but I recently tried the Adaptive Raost (yeah, “Rao”st) profile on their community forum, and nailed it on a Tanzanian coffee. Yesterday, I put the tower style roaster under the range hood, put in 1/4 lb of beans, hit “play”, brewed my wife and I a couple of flat whites, and before I was done, I had a perfect roast. I was even able to hear first crack across the kitchen and log it, just because I could. Perfect simplicity. The tower design means that the smoke is drawn out well. The chaff collector is a 💯. A key point, compared to a profiling drum machine, is that it automatically cools and shuts off. Pretty much the only babysitting it needs is to make sure that the beans are moving, so there is no fire hazard, and to ensure that there are no early warning messages. Given a clean launch, you can just turn your back, brew, and let the roasting happen. When dialing in a bean, it can be a bit nerdy. Once you’ve got a profile, the workflow is very Niche-like. You put the dose in, turn it on, and it just does its thing. Anyway, reviews of the Nano 7 or similar would be cool. And please include the economics. My wife and I drink 4 espressos a day, total. Home roasting saves us nearly $1,500 per year. Home roasting easily pays off a good machine. And finally, there are machines that are kitchen appropriate with a friendly workflow. Dialing in the roast is the only challenging part, but even that has been clean and enjoyable.
Enjoyed the video but I got dizzy from it. You may want to buy a gimble or something for any future videos where you walk around. I had to close my eyes until the intermission.
Thanks for all your good and hard work. ☺️ Did you manage to see the Meticulous Espresso at the expo? Came across them in Kickstarter. Was wondering how's the machine.
Depends on what you’re looking for. I was on the hunt for more espresso machines to test, so that was my goal. But there’s some cool stuff on all sides. The Aries is an upcoming 83mm conical burr grinder that looks amazing.
The price barrier of entry to high end grinders has IMO been lowered by the Zerno Z1, which I was hoping Sprometheus was going to mention as incoming for review. The couple of folks I found online who put them against P64s gave the nod to the Zerno- one just on lower price and convenience, the other also on quality of shots (the Zerno's prebreaker makes a difference). I ordered one recently, which adds on blind burrs, an ionizer, and a slower prebreaker over the ones currently in the wild.
My first home espresso machine was a Sage (Breville) Oracle Touch in 2019 and I was so happy after I sold the machine. All of its defects forced me into learning everything about making espresso. I switched the hopper with a single dosing hopper, removed the tamper automation, switched the brew head etc. but I however was always afraid that the machine would eventually start leaking because it was so cheaply made. I am so happy now with my Rancilio Silvia Pro X paired with a Niche Zero.
I'd like to see a range of Breville machine that represent the Low, Medium, and High Tier for comparison sake. Really interested to see how their bean to cup espresso machine fare against equipments within the same budget.
Case Study is the bomb. I really enjoyed the place, the product and the people. While you are up in Portland, you should treat yourself to a trip to Cascade Brewing for some elite level sour beer if you like such things. Two of my favorite places in Portland.
I remember the Bean Bar, great coffee there from 49th parallel. There were a few downtown coffee shops that didn't make it through covid unfortunately.
If you have them at a similar time I’d love a comparison of the You and ES1, both seem to have a similar target market though the ES1 has an almost Single Group Slayer price tag so curious to see if it lives up to that.
Thanks for the slightly different content, makes a change. Hope the contacts you made come through with test machines for you (and us) to review in the coming months. Take care, all.
Please look at Breville - the Barista Pro! It’s a really nice semi-entry level espresso machine that has a good balance between manual espresso making vs ‘automated’ features
great to hear you may review the argos, i keep going back and forth in my head for next machine pavoni pro or wait it out for that, glad to also hear you will give breville some love, beginner machine for sure but can make great shots once you dial in, IMS basket on that made a world of difference for me

Will the Odyssey Argos be the Olympia Cremina update we've all been waiting for? Time will tell.
Possibly…I wish I could say but I haven’t used the Cremina yet.
@@Sprometheus The only weakness of the Cremina is temperature instability at the grouphead. The Argos apparently addresses this issue.
If it ever ships!
Meticulous? Some other youtubers were able to get beta versions (alpha even?), was hoping to get your thoughts too.
Breville Bambino! I’d be excited to see what you can do with and around this compact, simple espresso machine/appliance.

I’ve never been to Texas, and would love to visit. But I still found the graffiti hilarious. Vegemite makes me cringe! Lone wolf represent.
Most exciting things in 2023:
1. Thai coffee
2. New generation of decaf (sugarcane processed columbian)
3. Cascara summer drinks

The new Breville Barista Touch Impress please!
No Meticulous!
