- Running out of wood is not an option. The cold is coming and I don't want to be caught without enough wood to heat the cabin. Today I pick up my saw and axe and get busy preparing for the extreme cold. Thanks to all who watch! God bless!
There is nothing like the sound of a real Husky best saw ever created
Little brother, your a young man with an old soul..full respects, something i figured out many years ago, the only time we're finished with fire wood is when we empty the ashes..Stay safe, God bless you mightily always..i truly enjoy your post
A man who cuts his own firewood warms himself twice.
Thanks for keeping me entertained throughout the year. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.
Excellent commentary, excellent content, and excellent editing (set-up for the continuity makes it look seamless!). And no stiff critters, that's a plus.
Great, informative video. Reminds me of my Gr andpa who passed in 1959, and what they endured earlier, as have many stories at 84.
Keep up the good work as they did.
…from Upstate NY, USA…👩🦱🙏
Merry Christmas Sir Kusk and family. Cut down, limb, buck up, split and haul back an entire tree to the cabin then unload under the shed...what a day! Your work ethic is worthy of an Oscar eh.. Thanks for the view of a white Christmas, haven't seen that in many years. Stay safe and warm, God bless.
Thank you for the kind words! Merry Christmas and God bless!
Great video dude. If I could offer two suggestions please. I’m an experienced wood cutter. Could you please find a comfortable pair of safety glasses as a must when cutting. It’s too late after something happens that could have been easily prevented. Secondly, please stay off the logs while cutting. Much greater chance of slipping, falling and potential saw injury. I ask this with nothing but good intentions for your safety. I have been there and done that. Great beard by the way. I wish I could grow one like that. 🤙
Thanks for the advice. You're certainly right! Safety first. Thanks for watching! Take care.
That was my first thought. I too am an experienced wood cutter (71 yrs old) where's his safety glasses
Get hold of a proper log splitting axe they make life so much easier
Same here but they make us say arborists. That way the customer pays more, the boss says we see it in our checks as extra pay. Must have forgotten me cuz I haven't seen a nickel a still ride the bus with my Husqvarna...I find it relaxing to sit in rush hour traffic, back of a loaded bus 1 hour late while I file my chains. No one's ever complained....I should by a hockey mask
Ya should have saved one of those big rounds for a chopping block . It's amazing how good they split on a hard surface instead of on the forest floor . Merry Christmas to you ! 😊
He said in a video not long ago he prefers splitting the wood on the ground because he gets more power in the swing.
Chopping blocks do have their place. Right now the ground is frozen so one isn't really necessary. Merry Christmas!
I can't thank you enough for your videos, you are living a lifestyle that I always wanted. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family. May you be blessed with good health and happiness
Thank you for watching! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours!
Have a Merry Christmas to you and your family 🙏
Merry Christmas to you and yours!
No matter if your trapping or cutting wood, I really enjoy your videos, Merry Christmas and may God bless your family.
Merry Christmas! God bless you too!
Great day in the woods ! Success on the tree fell ! Keep up the great content !
That was some 3-D action driving those wedges with that axe. Made me think of those old 3-D movies. Enjoyed it since I was far enough away to not get axed.
Little brother, your a young man with an old soul..full respects, something i figured out many years ago, the only time we're finished with fire wood is when we empty the ashes..Stay safe, God bless you mightily always..i truly enjoy your post

Really enjoyed this Ryan!! You’re truly living with god!! Wishing you a very merry Christmas!! ☮️💕
Merry Christmas to you too! Thanks for watching!
Hey, I just came across your video and it was a treat to watch. Keep up the great work out there!
Great video as always! Love these videos from the cabin so much!! Merry Christmas!
Thank you! Merry Christmas!
Wow! Now that’s a “hard days work”! You sir are a beast!
Thanks for another video.
10 years ago I took some 3/4" thick oak, glued 3 pieces together with wood glue, and cut out my own handle. Still works good today.
Thanks for the tip! I think I'm going to try this!!
A good day in the bush, indeed. Good vid, too. Thanks. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Merry Christmas to you and yours! Thanks for watching.
That was a good log, good filming too, good luck trapping!
We just found your channel this morning! Really enjoyed it. Hello from KY! Merry Christmas!
Thanks for tuning in! Merry Christmas to you too!
Neg 5 is quite truly the absolute best wintertime temp. Great stuff
It certainly is hard to beat! Thanks for watching!
Great job of wood for this Winter.
Good looking, and good performing, woodshed. The horizontal poles keep wood high and dry so that it doesn’t get wasted by moisture and rotting. Plus, a woodchuck or two will nest under it, and are available to become “dinner guests”. 😏

An entire 20 minute video of you cutting wood. Truly riveting
You’re a hard worker. Great video. God Bless and Stay Wild. Merry Christmas
Thanks for tuning in! God bless you too. Merry Christmas!
happy holidays to you and your family, you are good with woodwork, make your own handle
If I could get my hands on some hard wood I definitely would make my own. Thanks for watching! Happy holidays!
@@KuskWild happy holidays and God Bless
Looks like you're gonna have a warm cabin this winter Bud.
O hell no I’m in Texas and it’s going to freeze again 😢😢😢
You people are extremely tuff skin and hard headed 😮
Merry Christmas and build fire 🔥
Merry Christmas!
Make axe handles with what you can find. Yellow yellow birch or ash are good and the limb wood is better, so 'm told. have a happy holiday.. tks. for sharing
Hardest wood we have here is white (paper) birch. I'm going to try using it for axe handles. Harder wood would certainly be better though. Thanks for the advice! Take care.
Happy Holidays to you and your family!🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
Blessings to you and family
Watching you from here in The Netherlands 🇳🇱. I hope I can live like you some day. Learning a lot from your videos. Thanks 🙏🏻
Looking forward to seeing you on the trapline again, have a great Christmas.
Thanks! Merry Christmas to you too!
❤ Hello. There's a lot of snow here, it's very cold but you can still build a house. That's amazing. Wishing you happiness and health for your new trips ❤❤
Greetings from Los Angeles, California, where it's nice, warm and 70°F.
Merry Christmas.
I would recommend Killinger Handles. I have a French Curve of his that I love! Thanks for the videos bud.
Thanks for the recommendation! Merry Christmas to you too!
Keeping up the fun stuff
As a Jersey shore fella this is such a nice change to watch and learn
Merry Christmas from Finland! Great tubing!
Merry Christmas from Australia we're gearing up for +40°C over Christmas.
Haha wow, that's hot! Hope you stay cool! Merry Christmas to you my friend!
@KuskWild and to you mate stay warm
Always great content!
This video caused me to learn something today.....LOL
As a Michigander, we use Fahrenheit.
The thing I learned? Fahrenheit and Celsius converge at -40.
God bless you and stay safe.
God bless you as well!
A beautiful morning with a cup of coffee and a new Kusk video, good start of the day
Lots of good qualty wood. It will definitely help once the weather gets colder. Hope you have a Merry Christmas. Cheers, and God Bless! ✌️🎄🇨🇦
Merry Christmas to you too! God bless.
Good axe handles are hard to get. Have you considered making some from ash or iron wood if you have any on your trapline.
Unfortunately we don't have many hardwoods up here. Hardest we have is white (paper) birch. I cut some birch logs last year that I'll try to make handles from. Just have to let them season for another year. For now, I'm stuck buying. Thanks for watching!
Slaying that wood man doesn’t look like you need longer handle. Props on technique and gear clearly you know ur gear as well. Carpenter myself wish I had experience with handles would love to help you out. Essential craftsman has some good handle vids but not tried em’ yet .. dude knows his stuff. Stay safe bro and happy holidays from Deep South.. boring no snow land.
Thanks! I'll check his videos out. Happy holidays!
The sound of the chainsaw makes me feel nostalgic for the days my family and I used to get firewood when I was growing up
Get some ash and make your own axe handles. Would make a great video. Im sure you can find a local lumber mill in your area with some blanks. Hickory and ash are the two best woods for handles.
Thanks for the advice! I'll see if I can source some ash around here.
Trapper Gord’s carry’s a fair selection of axe handles, I like the Ardvika handles with the texturing carved into them, think he has some double bit handles too….
Thanks for the tip! Next time I'm through that area I'll stop and have a look.
There are a number of tool handle makers in the US, but I assume some may not ship to Canada. Bummer for the folks there. But it may be worth it to try making contact with some of them as maybe you'll get lucky enough to find what you need. Most are in the Eastern half of the country, so I'd wonder if there are handle makers across the border in Canada as well.
Best of luck, and Happy Holidays to you.
I'll have to look into handle makers here in Canada. Shipping from the US is pricey! Thanks for the tips. Happy holidays!
Merry Christmas. Have you got any Iron wood trees on the property? The make great axe and mall handles and he narrow tops can be used for your ice spuds and beaver dam pulling tools. Great video and nice to see such a solid tree even it is standing dead, Another good suggestion for finshed axe handles are the country feed and seed stores. Good luck. Trapper Darn, Central Ontario Canada. Waiting for your trapping videos to get going again for the season.
That nice tree make a lot off lumber for new cabin. Big timber make a lot lumber in a short time . 😊
Holy smokes -40 is 20 degrees colder than coldest days here . Certainly for the tough. I’m not sure how feasible it is, but if you could find a specialty wood store, one that sells hardwoods I mean you might be able to get the hickory stick your looking for. Good luck and stay safe out there friend 👍👍
I've looked around and haven't been able to find much. I can find hickory boards online, but between the cost of the wood and shipping, it's just not feasible. Hopefully I'll be able to find something that works. Thanks for watching!
Hull around the edges in firewood sized pieces.. less swings and won't impact the shoulders as bad.. and get a 6-8 pound wood splitting maul.
Buckle Bill Ray today making axle handles
-40° is the only time C and F are the same temperature
You forgot to yell Timber....Have a great Christmas
-2 F here in Michigan, US this morning.
i make my mine with ash boards i get from a local woodworking shop. lot of work but you get exactly what you want!
I'm going to see if I can find ash boards in my area. Thanks for the tip!!
Buongiorno, complimenti per il video 🐺
Happy Holidays everyone!!!
Musk outdoor s get ahold of an arborist in a bigger city and they generally will give some ash elm or cherry 🍒 trees and apples 🍎 trees 🌳 usually they will give to you for free as I used to turn bowlsan that is where I got my wood. Merry Christmas 🎄 and merry Christmas
Thanks for the tips!! I'll give it a try. Merry Christmas!
@@KuskWild if you are going to glue them together make sure you glue them with a100% waterproof glue. Or the.boards will come apart a polyurethane glue will work fine but ordinary carpenter glue will not do
Try Whiskey River Trading for axe handles.
Thanks! I'll check them out!
I would advice to even travel to an area where there's hard wood, I think oak is the best, and get some right from the woods, season it for a least a year, and there you go, you're set for a while, plus you can make videos etc.
Maybe go to a local saw mill for your ax handle wood. Thanks for sharing what you do.
Love from lndonesia 😍
40 below will certainly be a test!
Beaver tooth handle company in the states makes decent handles ..I have used several on my axes and hatchets
Thanks for the info! I'll be sure to check them out.
Dead wood is rarely good with steering or holding during felling, all consider the outcome was pretty good!
Hey Ryley, great to see you out there doing what you love…The cabin, wood pile AND the beard all looking in great shape….Merry Christmas to you and your family from my gang here in U.K….stay warm man 👍🏻
Thanks for watching!! Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Bottom rounds of spruce are nice for splitting but the knotty rounds at the top can be stubborn.
New sub love the content keep it up
Bet you sleep well for those days you’re lumber jacking. Good luck on finding some hickory handles.
I don't know if you prefer to carve your own handle, I know you're great at carving and working with wood. Hoffman Handles sells Hickory billets that you can carve your own, and if you just prefer to buy one ready they have a wide variety also.
Whiskey River Art and Trading is another great option. They both are excellent choices for axe handles IMO. Thanks for the awesome content 👊 I enjoy both your channels!
Have you considered tamarack for firewood? Don’t know if you have any handy to the cabin but it makes great firewood. Burns a bit hotter and longer than spruce and pine but pops and farts a lot. I loved it when I had a woodstove. There’s a good stand of them on our property and I burn it in our fire bowl. The only downside in an outside fire is the aforementioned popping. Tends to blow coals out of the fire at you. Just keeps you on your toes! 😉
We have small stands of tamarack in this area. It would take a lot of trees to fill up the wood shed. The spruce is just more accessible and available.
@ Yeah. My tamarack are almost as big as that spruce you cut in the video.
You can cover that outdoor wood with a tarp! Easy.
When you cut your scarf (notch) and back cut, I noticed they were angled towards the river. That is probably why you missed your target direction.
Hope you find the longer handle for your axe 👍
Would a snowmobile be better for the conditions, brilliant videos
Try Kidron town and country in Kidron Ohio . They have some really nice stuff and a lot of off the grid items also. They have a big Amish customer base .
-40 on both Centigrade and Fahrenheit is the same temperature. That’s where the two scales cross.
Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
I had good luck with synthetic handles
Get a piece of old tire wrap it on the front half of the handle with wire . It will make your handles last a lot longer. You don’t need a huge piece just enough to cover he area that get wear.
So what do u do for work ? And how far do u live from the cabin ?
How often do u get to go their
Whiskey river trading is the place to go for really good axe handles ready made . I have a bunch of hickory here I have to lmill up and i could mill some blanks for you as well if you want
I'll check them out! Some hickory blanks would be awesome. Shipping them would probably cost a fortune though!
Love your videos! I highly highly recommend Beavercraft they have high quality products and also have hand forged axe heads which i know you don't need but I would def check them out!
❤ Find Ash, Hickory or even Oak Handles. Ash is becoming harder to find and the Baseball bats are breaking now because they are made of Maple and differn’t woods. A good Ash, Hickory or Oak handle is not too hard to find. With Hickory being the best ⚠️ ⛔️ Some of the newer, better axes today (FISKERS)
are made with fiberglass handles and seem to be the most durable.
You could try at W G Chanin Hardwoods Ltd in Edmonton for what you are looking for in a handle. They have a lot of hardwoods there if that is close enough to you
Try looking at legman’s catalogs great Amish axe handles maybe call them ask what u need and order them
Thanks for the advice! I'll have a look!
The fact that you dont wear goggles when cutting and splitting the wood baffles me. Last time i went to cut down a tree, i almost lost my eye from a piece of wood flying towards my face. Missed my eye luckily.
😂 As a fan and follower of your other channel. Have to say it was a strange seeing you drive around on a quad bike, and use a chainsaw sir! Loved the video and looking forward to catching up on the content on this channel! As for your axe handle issue, I am guessing getting a saw mill like West of the 5th in Bluffton or K&H Sawmill in Mayerthorpe do a custom sawing of raw hickory would be to expensive? Or do they even do an order as small as you want and in the cut dimensions you need? Watching you shape a chunk of hickory into an axe handle might be a great video idea, for either of your channels!
Educate me: How is wood in a dead standing tree dryer than the stacked wood at the cabin that got wet? By the fact that the standing tree is dead, do its roots not continue to draw up any water into the tree?
I don’t know exactly where his cabin is but I willing to bet I live within a few hours of it so same climate basically. We have low humidity here all year. That dead standing tree has nowhere for water to sit when it rains and there is always air flow around it so it dries quickly after any precipitation. It also probably has been standing dead for several years so it’s well seasoned. As far as drawing moisture through its roots ; that generally won’t happen with spruce trees which is what he cut up in the video. I’ve only ever seen that happen once when I cut a tamarack in a swamp during a very wet year. The wood in the piles had rain and snow that probably froze on it and that takes a while to dry again.
i guess wrong on the bar length, my guess 32inch. Like 👍
You might try Hoffman Handles for some axe handles :)
Impressed with your tree dropping knowledge, from a full time tree guy. But honestly you should stay off the log and cut from either side of the tree.
Also try to break a side off the round you’re splitting and go from there at the edges. Hate to be the guy criticizing just some advice
