I want to put a colony on a ship made out of an asteroid.
@tottyto i dare u to make an original vid that wasnt stolen from someone else, because they made so many videos about this ice ship and they all had millions of views, u were one of my fave youtuber until 2 years ago then like 90% of the content creators u started stealing openly, its a shame u stopped caring, ty so much for so many interesting videos prior to this tho, im unsubbing, it hurts to witness what happened on this channel wish u the best
@thoughty2 amazing stories as always
why did you change the name and preview?
Pyke's craziness was indeed genius, and his work, despite its final outcome, is a testament to the power of unconventional thinking in times of crisis.
Hello there 42 :D
You fought he, too?
LMAOOO this ones pretty good
Hi@@nofretzDW
I always hear that as an American 😂
@@nofretzDWyes
One of the greatest content creators on RUclips. Thanks for all you do Thoughty2.
'The single' greatest creator you mean
Absolutely. There are a lot of content creators I respect deeply for their work, but it's hard to name any single one who's brought me more quality "leisure" time than Thoughty2.
Edit: And also knowledge..I guess I can't just leave out the absurd amount of things I've learned from the channel.
Did I miss something? When did it become popular to brown nose the content creators? :P
@@Schmorgus It happened 2 days ago
Thoughty is great.
I read an article on this a few years ago. At the end it mentioned some results from his invention of pykrete, the only one I'm remembering being that the massive Ice slides and Ice castle tourist attractions have wood pieces spread throughout them to make them act more like pykrete.
Actually, the plough screws replacing the tracks on ice are being used, even today, although with rather unique vehicles.. Check out the "Screw-propelled vehicles". They have been used mostly in USSR during cold war but not only.
They do work great on snow, but cannot take a road, that's the main issue.
Makes sense that it was the USSR
They were marketing screw propelled amphibious vehicles in the US in the late 90's/early 2000's. They also use the screw treads on industry specific vehicles, namely equipment meant for "mud farming "
Another huge issue for the project was that as they experimented and came up with innovative mechanisms the Battle of the Atlantic was being won. Eventually there came a point where the U-Boats were no longer the menace they had been and Germany's surface raiders were either sunk or trapped in port.
Also, longer-ranged land-based aircraft were able to close the "Atlantic Gap" and provide continuous air cover for convoys, so there was no longer a pressing need for a floating airfield capable of operating large maritime patrol aircraft in the middle of the Atlantic.
Breaking of the enigma machine was why the u-boats weren't a problem anymore
GODDAMN!!
So much intentional alliteration, a work of art I say.
except everything in this "work of art" is stolen from other creators this subject has 15 videos with all 300k+ views on youtube alone and even more on tiktok, i guess this is a channel for people living under a rock like urself since u dig it so much...
@@BartanKepar-ci8iican tell me where this video was stolen from?
@@BartanKepar-ci8iiWho would've thought "topics" are supposed to be original?
There are millions of people out there with opinions like yours. Calm down.
Fantastic video on one of my favorite WWII stories! For anyone curious, this project was done at Brule Lake in Alberta, about four hours west of Edmonton. From what I've read, there is a plaque dedicated to the Habbakuk on the shores of the lake. I was planning to visit last year but had to postpone. Can't wait to try again this spring!
You were going on a trip to visit a plaque?
It wasn’t done at Brule Lake. The prototype was constructed at Patricia Lake in Jasper National Park. The plaque there is underwater, and can only be visited by divers.
The difference between madness and genius is very thin. This guy was walking in the absolute middle. Great story!
Genius is controlled insanity.
I was literally just reading Stick a Flag in it with my friend and then this popped up and I just had to show him the author haha!
Always excellent to have a surprise notification from Thoughty2! Really appreciate you Arran!
13:56 Yes, Mythbusters made a pykrete boat. It somewhat worked.
I'm a simple man, I see a thoughty2 video, I click that video and enjoy that video.
Imagine the reactions of the Titanic survivors after hearing an actual ice ship was being planned
Wow 5 million subs that’s what you get for great story telling. People need to take notes 🤣🤣🤣👍
Thoughty2 uses the Rhyme As Reason effect to captivate you and it's honestly very well done.
You had me looking for what the Rhyme and Reason effect is. Thanks.
@@soundscape26 now that you know, his entire lines filled with words that start with the same letter or hinge on the same consonant will sound very different haha
@@cw8958 I had noticed some alliteration and that had been pointed out in the comments already but never that rhyme and reason effect. Very interesting.
Well pikecrete might have been shelfed, but regular concrete ships were actually built and there is still one in kiel harbor today!
Fort Drum is my favorite
There is a concrete ship in Charleston harbor as well.
I think there are some concrete ships literally embedded in the mud of the side of the river Severn near a tiny village called Purton.
And on the Manchester ship canal, and there was a concrete barge off Alex dock until about 1970.
I love how you find these overlooked stories in people. This is really interesting.
Ah yes the pykrete carrier
Anyone els falls asleep listening to thought2 in a relaxing way
Sometimes. I have to re-watch the episode because of it
Me to I do that exact something
Yeah cures my insomnia
He has ASMR voice, I could listen to him talk for hours...and I do 🤷🏻♀️
I can and have fallen asleep while listening to Thoughty2 videos.
His voice can put me in a lul if I’m lying down.
As Always GOOD JOB Thoughty2, Arran🫶🏻🙏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Ice was sold to folks back in the day.
Saw dust was sprinkled on the blocks of ice to slow down melting.
That was how my Finnish immigrant great grandfather built his first business, getting him a huge house on hundreds of acres of land, and when the electric refrigerator started to impinge on his business, he parleyed it into a home heating oil company that my father later turned into a bankruptcy.
@@MonkeyJedi99 I have a similar story with my family settling in the western provinces in Canada. I learned a lot from their hardships to apply to todays problems. What is important and what is not............live within your means......improve yourself.....help others.
We should spread this stuff over Greenland

It was the ships revenge for the titanic. ''If thou kill one of us, thou shalt not become one of us''
Dude, I listen to you while I work, and it's so much fun absorbing all that information. You're awesome.
How do you feel about a ship made from iceberg?
42 : welll you're about to ....
Thank you, Arran for all the hard work it takes to bring us these wonderful videos. I've been watching since at least 2019 and look forward to your posts eagerly. Thanks again.
Wouldn't have to worry about dehydration lol
By far my favourite RUclipsr ever
I love your quirky stories of quirky inventions, Arran. Keep up the great work!
I just want to say, your content is absolutely amazing. Thank you for continuing to deliver obscure history to us!
Once in awhile you hear about an iceberg the size of a small country breaking off Antarctica and floating around the ocean for five or six years. I always thought some rich entrepreneur should helicopter out there, plant a flag on it and build an ice hotel & resort on it. A lot of adventure eco tourists might pay for it. Obviously it's temporary, but it might be fun to own your own floating island for a few years.
I’ve thought of the same thing, maybe we should go into business together
A lot of it is underwater though and only the tip of it sticks out
@@Sniperboy5551I'm sure you've both got a whole lot more ideas to share with each other. This one is probably just the tip of the iceberg!
…I'll see myself out

Thanks for all the videos you make. I always learn something new be it about history, science or any other field that i'd otherwise be oblivious to. Your videos are funny, memorable and a joy to watch. Once again thank you for them.
There's another factor that prevented the building of a pykrete aircraft carrier - the range of aircraft was increasing. In 1941, the Kriegsmarine's submarine fleet had plenty of space in between air patrols from Canada and those from the British Isles. In this space, they could easily hide by submerging, and lie in wait for convoys. Pyke's massive carrier would sit in the middle of this space, allowing air patrols to cover the entire width of the North Atlantic.
By the end of 1943, this space had almost disappeared. Patrols from Canada were almost able to overlap with patrols from the British Isles. Thus, Pyke's carrier was no longer needed.
The adorable animation just keeps getting better and better ! Looking forward to the next episode THANKS
love your videos. Thanks for the research.
Love your Videos Thoughy the amount of effort you put into every upload is insane, keep up the good work
Who else remembers the Mythbusters episode about Pykrete
Hell yeah!
'How do you build a ship from an iceberg?' Balls. Cold frozen balls, that's how.

I've never heard this story before. Thank you for sharing. It would have been a beautiful ship.

This made me miss The Mythbusters.
The story of Mountbatten invading Churchils bath to show pycretes properties is sooo hilarious!
The epitome of fantastic. What an idea. Who would have thought this happened? A very COOL way to travel. Thanks Thoughty2.

Dont tell them Pyke!!
I automatically read that in Mainwairing's voice 😂
I really enjoy your channel and I watch it every chance I get.
It really does make me wonder how many amazing materials we are overlooking. When true AI eventually exists, or a powerful physics simulator maybe, we could see some amazing materials invented overnight, potentially. No doubt there are many sitting around we haven't thought of.
We're probably overlooking a lot of good ones, but we're also overlooking a whole lot more bad ones
Don't forget, pykrete looked promising at first, promising enough to be worth doing the research on, but after they did that research no one ended up actually using the stuff. So maybe it wasn't as great as they hoped
Stable moscovium😂
Ah, but does AI have imagination?
@@lorellgingrich1334 you'd have to define what "imagination" means
But if you're asking whether AI can come up with new things, new ideas, things that aren't a direct copy of something that already exists? Sure. It already does that
Thank you Sir
Fun fact: the bit where the guy gets shot in the leg during the demonstration actually happened. He was an Admiral, and the ricocheting bullet allegedly grazed his trouser leg.
Before refrigeration was invented in the 40's , saw dust from the local woodmill was the perfect insulation for ice. It was a great idea.
Great video as always. I just have a small thing: the map at the beginning, where you are talking about WWI, is actually a map with borders as they were shortly before WWII. Nonetheless, keep up the good work.

HABAKKUK: I've got the power of foresight
HABAKKUK II: You didn't see this failure coming?
I remember hearing about pykrete on oversimplified but never knew that it was supposed to be a ship
I suspect that this project was the inspiration behind making ships out of concrete during the cold war. Several cargo ships were made out of concrete but it found more use in the pleasure boats, numerous sailboats were built out of concrete.
Thank you from Ireland
Great, a melting boat manned by a bunch of frozen corpse's. Genius.
Am i losing my mind or did this thumbnail change from the ship being viewed from the more left side to now being more front facing?
