They fail to mention that they could have been stranded on the islands. You can’t take a huge ship up to tiny islands, you take the row boat. My idea is they forgot to set anchor on the ship, went on the island with the dingy, the ship drifted and they got stranded and no one thought to check and see if they were on the island.
My thought exactly.
Would be interesting if they did some archeology today, in the areas where a possible landing would take place compared to where the ship was situated.
You think an experienced captain would make this kind of mistake??
@@QueenLiliTheRed Well, one of the other takes I've seen pointed out that those who scrutinized the log book of the Celeste... realized that she was abandoned while close enough to the Azores that one could in fact get to the Azores by a ship's launch. She was found far from the Azores... but she'd been drifting for weeks at that point.
which is a detail of the story that makes it so much less mysterious. Getting in a rowboat on the high seas is a fool's errand unless truly desperate. But if you're within sight of land? suddenly it's far less ridiculous.
🎵Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, the tale of a fateful trip ...🎵😄
@@marhawkman303 drifting for weeks? But according to this video, the last log entry was dated "10 days earlier" before the Mary Celeste was intercepted. So just over two weeks. If they purposely left the log behind in case someone chanced upon the ship, why not write the reason for abandoning ship? To me it suggests a last minute dash - some papers and navigational instruments were taken but not much else. It's very peculiar.

The Mary Celeste was a brigantine about 100 ft long and weighed about 200 tons and had a crew of 11. It was not, by any stretch of the imagination, a "HUGE SHIP".
As Morehouse and his crew approached the Mary Celeste, they noticed that the ship was in good condition and that there were no visible signs of damage or distress. However, when they boarded the vessel, they found that it was completely abandoned. The lifeboat was missing, and there was no sign of the crew or passengers. All of their personal belongings and the ship's documents were still on board, and there was no evidence of a struggle or violence.
The mystery of the Mary Celeste has puzzled investigators and historians for more than a century. There have been many theories about what happened to the crew and passengers, including piracy, mutiny, and a freak wave. Some people have even suggested that the ship was visited by aliens or that it was the victim of a supernatural event. However, no one has been able to provide a definitive explanation for the disappearance of the crew. The case remains one of the most famous maritime mysteries of all time.
I mean there are so many potential possibilities. Did a crucial component of the ship break down? Did they run out of food and take the life boat to a nearby island they saw off in the distance? Maybe they took a day trip to check something out they saw in the water, or took the life boat to go visit a nearby ship crew on another vessel, and somehow the boat drifted away. Another possibility is they were trying to fish from the lifeboat. Maybe they lost power aboard their ship. Maybe they hit something ant thought the ship was going to sink.
@@buffalokay It is difficult to say which theories about the Mary Celeste have not been ruled out, as the true cause of the ship's abandonment and the disappearance of the crew remains a mystery to this day. Despite extensive research and investigation, there is no concrete evidence to support any of the theories that have been proposed about what happened to the Mary Celeste and her crew.
Some of the theories that have been proposed over the years include the possibility that the ship encountered some sort of mechanical failure or malfunction, that the crew encountered some sort of external threat, such as pirates or a sea monster, or that the crew abandoned ship for some other unknown reason. However, none of these theories have been supported by concrete evidence, and it is likely that we will never know the true cause of the Mary Celeste's abandonment and the disappearance of the crew.

I think i have to play a bit Poirot here and ask, how many of the proposed answers to this have considered the psychology involved?
The captain's young daughter being on board could very well have helped him to make a more hasty decision than he otherwise would have.
My guess would be that the bad weather the day before the last log entry directly or indirectly disturbed the barrels enough that the red oak ones started leaking overnight(or perhaps leaking -more- or getting spread out faster due to water taken in from the bad weather, also potentially causing already leaked alcohol to spread faster and further), shortly after the log entry, this is discovered, the crew gets in the lifeboat as the captain not quite panics, after opening the hatches to air out the fumes, ties the boat to the ship while waiting for that, and then the increased oxygen content in the mix from said airing allows it to be extremely easily ignited(possibly the increased air circulation causes it to reach a lit candle or similar) and explodes, severing the towline in the process, or possibly even damaging the lifeboat and the people in it(and very likely stunning them enough that they cannot react quickly enough)...
Definitely agree on the psychology angle. The captain had his entire family onboard. If there was danger on the ship, he likely did not think clearly. If the barrels were leaking, inhaling the fumes would have only made it worse
The Captain and the crew had been properly trained in the risks of transporting alcohol. It was no leak.
@@TheBlueScarecrow That assumes that there's absolutely zero possibility that something rare happened or that someone made a mistake. Just because it shouldn't happen or because it's more than a million to one odds does NOT mean that it does not happen, just that it's RARE.
Or like the sketch by Tage Danielsson about probability(truth, sanning vs probability, sannolikhet), when something is so improbable it shouldn't have happened, clearly it never did happen, except for the fact that it DID. He made it about Harrisburg, but the same argument could be made for many other "impossible" events.
ruclips.net/video/y46esp5xRDA/видео.html
@@DIREWOLFx75 Yeah, the Alcohol leak thing was actually proven TRUE. Some of the barrels were in fact completely EMPTY when the cargo was off-loaded. Apparently the construction of that batch of barrels was defective. most of the cargo was in other barrels not from a defective batch. So it IS true that there was a leak in the cargo.

I love how he like answers it really well and it sorta seems like he closes the case and then its 5 seconds of silence and then ".... BUT!!!"
It would be interesting to learn the prequel to this story: What were the circumstances surrounding the commissioning and building of this ship? Was she built of trees from an unlucky forest? Was a curse put on her by the wife of one of the workmen, killed due to the negligence of the monstrous owner? That sort of thing. But maybe the records aren't specific, since no one knew this was going to be such a strange ship. Your channel is brilliant, btw.
Maybe aliens boarded the ship looking for booze. The crew became frightened and fled. When the aliens noticed thier mistake they abandoned the ship.
WOW! Unlucky Forest. Travis Walton knows first-hand about unlucky forests. Fairies live in trees. You can Google that. And Travis Walton was hired to clear out all the dead wood. The Fairies didn't like that and they abducted him and put him through hell for a week. He's lucky they brought him back.
Oh come on,man!What the fuck?!
Unlucky trees? There was a fire place on board. That sounds like the Captain's cabin may have had a carbon monoxide issue. A few captains died. Possibly of related CO issues like heart attack or wot not. Maybe the whole vessel was affected below deck too. If they thought like they would have back then (like you with your unlucky forest) they could have put the CO poisoning down to a curse and gone in the life boat already disorientated. The Captain was off course too. Was he disorientated too? They were at the same latitude as Spain in December in Winter. The weather was poor. The fireplace was mentioned in a newspaper article about the disappearance. It was probably burning. I bet the issues with the ship's history occurred mostly in Winter too. I came up with my theory before I cross referenced the date to check if it was Winter and it was. It seemed unimportant at first and thus did not acknowledge it. But after I came up with my prognosis I checked the latitude and date. This kind of feedback after coming up with the theory is affirmation that a theory is on point. This type of after the fact affirmation will continue the further you look into it. CO is a flammable gas too. It could have mixed with the alcohol fumes. A superficial fireball was much more likely than alcohol fumes on their own. They had oil lamps then. The Mary Celeste wasn't cursed in my book, it was a CO trap.
1408? The ship
Damn that final captain.
Imagine how awesome it would have been to have that ship as a visitable tourist attraction.

Arg!!! Matey yon ship is mine!!!
Has anyone ever tried looking for the missing crew in Santa Maria? The Açores back then was a somewhat neglected part of Portugal, but Santa Maria was already one of its main islands. Whilst I doubt there are written records of people arriving there, there could be records in churches and alike as the crew would likely need distress support and that was a job for the Church then.
There was a search done on Sta Maria but nothing came up. Locals have a story that it was sighted but never came ashore, nor anyone else did. The dockmaster found it odd because in those days it would've been a port of call to bring on provisions.
If they are still alive, they are probably on the Great Ark now.
samehere
I think that one of the main theories about it is that they supposedly abandoned ship farther away from where they actually thought to be, probably resulting them to think they would reach Santa Maria but failed to

Imho the alcohol-fume version still holds up. It would explain why they left the sides open (increased air-flow) and let the ship go forward (increased airflow).
I don't think they went on the boat in case the ship blows up, but to reduce health-impact of the fumes, as well as the risk of any of the sailors accidentally creating a spark and setting off an explosion. when they are all on the boat, they can't ignite it.
The smell would have probably created a cloud behind the ship, so they could have just waited for the air to stop smelling like a tavern before going back. A plan they, for whatever reason, couldn't finish back to the ship.
I would agree ,that is the most plausible scenario. The pirating the ship for salvage is my second choice.
The Captain and the crew were well versed in the transportation of dangerous cargo.

Due to all of the information that you gave us, my new theory is that they had stopped at the Azores, anchored ship, and decided to take the smaller boat to shore for some enjoyment, rest, and relaxation. But, then the ship broke free and floated away, leaving the crew stranded on the Azores.
Wouldn't someone have noticed that the anchor was out? No one mentioned it and I think it would have been. That's something that would have been brought up when trying to piece together what happened.

I think it’s hilarious how he presents you with a scenario then ends up explaining it, with no trouble
No problem if you believe in Fairy Tales.
Well, it's not 100% certain what REALLY happened here. We can only deal with probability here. It seems fairly certain that the crew abandoned ship for some reason and either couldn't return to it or chose not to. The reasoning becomes a little less certain as many theories such as explosions, fear of sinking, ghosts, etc can't be confirmed by anyone. We can all have our guess as to exactly what happened and why, but we can't know for sure.
Part of the "mystery" is the salvage inquiry was more interested in screwing the crew out of their salvage rights than finding out what happened.
The evidence that the Celeste's crew abandoned ship while carrying a dangerous cargo was overwhelming but the inquiry kept trying to prove foul play had occurred and didn't investigate plausible theories.
The only mystery is:
Was it an explosion, the fear of an explosion or toxic stinging fumes that drove the entire crew into the life boat?
I don't think they believed the ship was sinking , in that scenario you have time to make log entries and grab personal items.
They had 9 barrels worth of pure wood alcohol sloshing around in the bilge and no way to get it out because the alcohol would cause the pump to jam (freeze).
So they were sailing along letting the wind carry the fumes away...when the wind died the fumes became unbearable.

As with a.m. and p.m. in English. Hard to remember if you are living in the 24hr system. I forgot what that really stands for, and I'm sure many English speakers don't know it too. But for them it's a habit.
I remember it like this: a.m. = after midday. Then knowing that the English are opposite (driving on the left) the after midday must be before midday. And the p.m. is the other Part of the day (because even less logical: is it pre midday or post midday?).
@@duudsuufd I like that..I had the thought yesterday that the moon is actually the sun and we forgot at some point in time ... i guess that time was p.m. which would make the OTHER part a.m. ( I heard once, at least, that it means post-meridian, and ante-meridian, but I'm not that sure about anything, anymore..truly ) i always thought the sun reflected light, found out yesterday it is a deflection.. i was there, but i dont remember much about it.

42 ... You're One Of The Very BEST Storytellers That I've Heard In Years !!! It's A Talent & You've Got It Down Pat !!! Please Never Stop Storytelling !!! 🤙🏻From 🇨🇦 42 🙋🏻♀️
I have been watching his videos since forever (sorry I haven't been able to sponsor you yet) I have seen you with and without a mustache, with and without suspenders, and sometimes with a bow tie? but I have just noticed his bright blue eyes. Wow I am ...Wow
Blue? Wow, on my screen they look vividly green. Even my brother, who was sitting next to me, saw them as green. Weird how different screens render things differently.
All things considered, I fully believe fear of (or an actual) alcohol explosion is the best explanation. It explains the two hatches open (either blown open in the blast or opened to off-gas the hold), why the crew and lifeboat were gone (abandoned ship, either to stay close while it off-gassed or to make an attempt at land), why all the food was still there, why a few barrels were empty, etc. Especially if the captain expected to come back to the ship, leaving the log book behind may have made at least some sense.
All the other theories are just too far of a stretch with no evidence.
That or someone was hidden on board who was sabotaging them and threatened them to leave
Wouldn't it be known what happened to the crew then? I mean if they left the ship wouldn't they tell someone that they were on a ship that blew up and left it floating
@@kgilbert2245 That assumes the crew were found and rescued, and didn't just drift on the ocean until something horrible happened. Remember, this didn't happen close to shore or anything.
They were "Frozen" and abducted.
After the end of the war, Rail sleepers from Auschwitz and Dachau were used to construct houses and buildings. It was said that the buildings became haunted with the tormented souls of the innocent, and the evil of the happenings there. The story of the mary Celeste makes me wonder if the wood used in it came from ancient burial sites or was used in the civil war. Lumber was extremely expensive so maybe they chose to upcycle.
its just a thought.
Fantasies doesn't really fit reality though. Ofc people will say things get haunted when they know where the construction materials come from. Especially when they're from the most talked about places in the world. And you can't build ships with old wood. They would sink within minutes from the constant stress of the salt water. Sure, you can fantasize about them using a tree where slaves or whatever you want to imagine got hung from. But let's be real. Ghosts are human imaginations.
@@Schmorgus I'll certainly beg to differ on the Ghost front. Where are you from? im from the UK. I can take you to a few places that are well known for paranormal events.
@@stavrosgiannaros9498 You can claim how much you want. "Ghost sites" are tourist attractions to earn cash. Nothing more. I'm from Sweden. I've been to sites like that. And every time they claim nothing happens because I "don't believe in it". Weird, isn't it :P
@@Schmorgus I think though you also need to look at Auschwitz and the land that the camp was on. Birds do not fly over it even now. Dogs will go nowhere near it either. Ghosts, spirits, Energy. Dogs are incredibly sensitive creatures as we know. They see things that are not there, they sense things that are about to happen. Yet they will go nowhere near Auschwitz willingly. It has been documented a lot of times. Everything has an essence. Some people feel it more, but i can walk into a place and tell immediately if I'm welcome or not, even if the owner or proprietor is smiling and laughing with me. I definitely wouldnt say im psychic but i am sensitive to energy. Having visited Auschwitz, Dachau and Belsen you can feel the energy there. Sure you know what happened there, and you know it was hellishly evil, but you can still feel it. The energy has not left.
I haven't watched a Thoughty2 video in years and wow, the editing has drastically improved and definitely made the whole experience more entertaining. However, I don't really see how that first caption dying was important in any way other than to keep people tuned in until the end of the video hoping for a concrete explanation.

Oh, fore and aft in sailing terms as you quite rightly state are the front and back of a ship. Please tell whoever does your graphics that the front (fore) of a ship is the pointy bit ;)
Yep... otherwise you'd be sailing in the other direction 😉
The log book was in the mate's cabin , that's why the captain left it behind when abandoning ship , couldn't find it .
There is a saying among seamen " your ship is your best life boat " , abandon ship only as a last resort .
Isn't it bad luck to change the name of a ship? I think I remember reading that somewhere....anyway great video with more to think about
It is said that the origin of the legend dates back to several centuries ago and that it was disclosed by the English navy, for economic reasons, to prevent pirates from changing the name of their ships and thus preventing them from being found after carrying out their misdeeds. Since the pirates were very superstitious, they began to spread stories of horrible shipwrecks and terrifying endings for the crews sailing aboard ships whose names had been replaced by another. With this, they tried to prevent pirates from changing names and thus facilitated the recovery of ships and goods that have been stolen.
Do you have to name it before it sails
I’m at the 9:00 mark and I just think they stopped at an island But the thing with that is you can’t take ships nearshore because they get stuck in the shallow waters so you leave them out so maybe it just Forgot to put the anchor down and it drifted off and they couldn’t catch up
I really love the snarky, witty, sarcastic humour in these videos! Thank you for all of your content Thoughty2! Also, sweet mustache!!!!

"And that was without even a single drop of rum"
I remember reading about this story when I was young and discussing it with my dad. Over the years there were embellishments or alterations to the mystery. But Thoughty2 did a great job of putting the different versions into perspective. I didn't know about the cargo which puts a different spin on things. Especially the recent chemical simulation. Joe Scott has a good video on this. I’m with him on the hypothesis that the alcohol leaked and the crew tied themselves onto the life raft until the fumes dissipated. The line holding them to the ship severed and the ship sailed away.

That bit about Jannette cracked me up.
That came out of nowhere ^^
"Fore and Aft hatches"..... No wonder she had so many accidents, sailed backwards.....
did no one look for the Mary Celeste crew on Santa Marie Island
What would they do there without their cargo? Taking advantage of the local hospitality will not last for long.
They could sell their alcohol and live like wealthy citizens. Even if they are not crooks who sell it for alcoholic drinks, but as a fuel to cook on it. You only have to make a jar with a wick to use it. And they also could sell (or trade) the food they had with them. But it all stayed on board.
@@duudsuufd In the escape theories.
@@duudsuufd if they had to abandon ship they wouldn’t be able to bring anything with them and if they worked well the locals would probably be at least ok with them
They did search, but there is no record that anyone from the Mary Celeste came ashore. She was sighted off shore but did not call at the Port, which most ships of the era certainly would have. (She either would've called at Santa Maria or neighbouring St Michael Island)

For info, Mary Celeste was an American merchant brigantine (Marie Celeste was a fictional ship based upon Mary Celeste {first name spelled differently}) She was a two master with square sails on the forward mast and mainly triangular sails from the aft mast, the aft sails configuration could be changed and a brig could be rowed. Much smaller, faster, and more maneuverable than a Man 'O' War.
