This is a place where you will start feeling guilty for not bringing your own bags to the grocery store. You will suddenly find yourself getting into brewing your own beer, jarring your own pickles and walking or biking to work and school instead of driving. There is an endless list of outdoor activities to enjoy, as well as heaps of community events and festivals to attend on the weekends. I've been living here for almost two years now and I love it
I had some dumbass college kids give me dirty looks at arcatas wildberrys for using their paper bags, its like.... I compost, you fucking piece of shit, and the damage is already done, I wasn't the one who made the paper bag, and sold it to a liberal store who bought it for their customers
@Harrison Bergeron I haven't lived there in 7 years. I've moved to 3 different cities and another state since then and Arcata is still my favorite place I've lived. I get that it''s not for everyone, but I personally would gladly move back to the area if I could afford it or find work there.
Went to school here and it was the best decision I ever made. Met some really good people here and its a beautiful place to live. Sometimes I regret leaving but I know it will always have a place in my heart. I will see you again someday Humboldt
It doesn't rain here nearly as much as it used to. I moved here in '92 and I swear it drizzled for 3 months straight. Even summer that year it was foggy and overcast most days.
me and my bros r making a journey by foot to live our lives as hippies in the name of peace and love. r starting point is Tennessee and we being walking in 2 weeks.
Now, that it has been 4 years--what company you working for. That Hippy thing has always been a temporary sub-culture. Most people drop out and back in again..
Looks like my kind of town. Pacific Northwester here (WA State) and there are a few places like Arcata around here as well. Peace to you all, and come up here for a vacation...it's legal for recreational use and the cops don't bother you! :)
Arlyn thanks for the tip. I have friends from Hupa rez, and some Hupas who live in Arcata, which I love/hate due to the amount of tweaker and rainbow kids on the streets. I want to move where people don’t treat you differently for having brown skin. That’s my only concern.
Are there ANY decent jobs in Fortuna, or is it just another forested retirement town? I mean, it's pretty there, but can the average family manage to find decent employment and actually survive there??
u really caught the groove feeling. Sounds like a background Grateful Dead soundtrack. Nice job! Liked that swish pan. How? Went to school (a couple of times in 76') A lot stays the same..
How is HSU? I really want to transfer out there for a wildlife major, and where I live is way too urban and way too hot to enjoy the outdoors (I live in the desert area). I heard they have a lot of good organizations for living more responsibly and green, so it seemed like a good choice.
"The Chinese and Russians have just invaded!"....."Huh? Oh yeah, that's a bummer, man, but have ya got a light and can I get a ride to the weed store, bro?"
Grossness. I'm glad I got the fuck out of that place. Still, I'm grateful that my parents met at The Alibi (and conceived me, of course!) and I hold quite fondly my memories of our redwood adventures and trips to the beach. It's sad that Humboldt is still a magnet for waifs and burnouts.
Marvin the Maniac it’s not like this all the time I promise💀 it’s more just a whole bunch of hippies chilling in town square but it’s really nice town to walk around and visit most of the shops but it’s mostly cafes and smoke shops and gift shops and stuff like that every now and then it’s a college town so I would expect it
DIDNT Believe IT UNTIL I SAW IT FOR MYSELF...it is a true hippie town was there last week. Cool people but not my type of town, the town I loved was Ferndale Ca.
Humboldt county was a great place to grow up, hard working people, fishermen, lumber mills, loggers........it's unrecognizable now with the pot heads, homeless, and beggars........never be the place I knew, so if you go there make sure you lock your car and park in well lit areas.
Kinda. It’s a cute little city and you’ll see little gatherings like this in certain spots on the weekends. There are some tweakers and homeless people there but it’s definitely not the worst part of CA lol. A lot of the people in these comments are hyperbolic because they’re from bland little suburbs so they freak out when they see some homeless people
grew up in this area..living in OK. now...my mom worked at the Humboldt state university jolly giant commons..about 25/30 years ago,,Does anyone remember Dot? Dorothy
These are the kinds of festivals I would rather be at. I live in Huntington Beach and fucking HATE it here! Up north is where the good green is at! ❤️🍁🙏
I lived in Arcata for over a year before moving to Loleta. Have to say, Arcata was a very cool place to live. Great vibe, and there are a lot of cool people. It's the place to live if you are a college student.
@Zed Love everything humans do has a price. A lot of forestry practices in logging can be sustainable, especially select cut practices. Housing is in short supply, building with wood is one of the least carbon intensive practices there is. There can be a balance with sustainably and future development, but it becomes difficult in today's world of profit driven practices.
It costs more to live in Beaufort, SC (total cost of living) than in Arcata, CA. With rents between $650 and $950 and the ability to buy a full buggy of groceries in Eureka for under $180, it costs between $900 and $1,300 less to live in Arcata than what it costs my family to live in Beaufort.
NatureBoi Hikes the town of Arcata is super full of tweakers. I’m just saying. I’ve seen people handing lit joints to children downtown. I’ve seen young adults standing on the sidewalk so wacked out that they shit their pants. You see some crazy shit in Arcata. No thanks!
"They ought to throw a net over the whole bunch of 'em." - Dirty Harry, 1971 Still, as a libertarian, to each his own; America's still a relatively free place - for the time being - so if people want to live like this so be it. However, if EVERYONE in the country wanted to live this way - as non-producing remoras - we'd be in very big trouble indeed. Still, I can respect someone who decides to bum around as long as they don't expect someone who doesn't to ante-up and provide for him.
hey from new orleans. i lived in arcata. i was never so in love with a city. xoxolove hell house charlies daughter. friends find me on facebook april spiva
Man what a great time we use to have. Now everyone is scared of each other, and guilty of their right to be alive, especially if you identify as white. Miss this little hippie town of activist, renegade cannabis growers, and natural remedy believers of intuitive health. Comply and signal you are PC and compliant is the new norm. Polytech college with more students then infrastructure can handle, but hey it's the future $$$. Keep it real Humboldt, our children are watching
I'm a libertarian as well, but I approach it from a very different perspective. First off, as a libertarian, you should be fully on board with the non agression principle. You let people live as they wish (regardless of your personal opinions) so long as they do not initiate force upon you. That means no "throwing a net over the whole bunch of 'em". Live and let live. Secondly, it's fallacious to think the whole country would want to live like that. It's not possible with a free market.
This is NOT a cool place. Humboldt county is a cruel place. Go there and your life might change forever. The cops will harass you over nothing, and you might be robbed and jailed by the local business like motel6, or Denny's. this place sucks

7 years later and it's required to bring your own grocery bags. Do you have any more observations, if so, please share them?
@@mrtimezone8658 Nope because I haven't lived there since 2014, nor have I been back to visit since then.

Everyone missing Arcata makes me appreciate more living in such a cool and down to earth community 😊
One of the 5 days out of the year that the sun was shining. ;-)
Chuck J Haha! Yes, we get a ton of rain there.
@@natureboihikes162 Can't be anymore rain than I get in Memphis but I bet the temperatures are a lot nicer.

Nothing says "Start the Revolution" like a statue of President McKinley in the town square!
It's not there anymore. It was just relocated to his Presidential museum in Canton Ohio.
I was thinking more like wanderlust the movie
Ahhhh, to hell with occupy wall street.....OCCUPY arcata....John in ct.
This could be many places - but at least it doesn't get too hot or too cold. Unfortunately nice places attract lots of homeless people .
The plaza sucks without the statue.
How does the statue make it better? Seems like you’re just offended that it was taken down, snowflake
