- Arcata, California is one of two main cities in Humboldt County. This video shows different facets of the town, including the center of town, Cal Poly Humboldt (formerly Humboldt State University), the Arcata Mash, and the Arcata Community Forest. This video shows both the town itself and the natural environment around it.
Special note: the day that I am uploading this video, there was an earthquake in Humboldt County, but this video was made a week ago, before the earthquake. But it does put the "tsunami zone" signs into context!
I was born in Fortuna. Gave birth to both my babies in Arcata. This is a special place. Its incredibly unique. For such a small area, we have people from all over the world here. Its always so interesting when I find videos about Humboldt.
Well if you want more videos of Humboldt I have about a dozen more! It's also interesting that you have a positive feeling towards Humboldt County. As you can see in the comments, not everyone agrees. :/
My daughter graduated from Humboldt State in 2022!!! So proud!!!
Awesome!
I wonder how high Jolly Giant Creek is now after all the flooding. I haven't heard much about Arcata or Eureka in the news with regard to all the flooding, but they must have had their share. I graduated from 'Humboldt State University' in 76. You did a great job on this video.
That is a good question. From what I can tell in news reports, the heaviest rain was to the south, but Humboldt County still got a lot---but not to a catastrophic level. I am glad you liked the video, I tried to give a fair look at what the town was like. There are several others about Humboldt County, as well. :)
The creek is fine. No flooding so far.
The city has invested huge time and energy over recent decades restoring its urban waterways so they can do their job, and they are.
@@Arfshesaid457 Very glad to hear it! :)
Huh…stumbled upon this. I live in Arcata!
I wonder if RUclips suggests videos by location? This video gets a lot of views, and I wonder who the audience is. My guess is that it's tourists or perspective students.
It's Beautiful I visited there once so beautiful
I also liked it! :) I wish I could have shown more areas in and around Arcata!
My friend had a black bear and her cub behind their tent when they woke up and ended up wandering in the middle of Tom and I saw a mountain lion literally I could pet it and I realized it can eat me
Arcata is very close to a lot of wildlife, it is true.
Bro i walked past this every single day for school
Yep, that is why I used this as a thumbnail, it is immediately recognizable.
Removing the statue was like ripping the heart out of the plaza.
I hope your safe out there since that Earthquake yesterday.
Yep, I got home five days before the earthquake happened---I am just uploading all my videos now. It was close to my mother's house, but she is safe. I have another video taken very close to where the epicenter would be.
I lived in those bushes
That sounds like an interesting story!
Is that great little sandwich shop still there from around '78-'79?
I don't know...I wasn't even born until 1979! :)
@@glowingfish Lol, sorry... I was 19. My buddy and I just spent the summer zig-zagging the country to Arcata from Michigan hitchhiking. My Aunt lived in McKinleyville. Learned to climb redwoods there and worked for almost 6 years doing powerline clearance, then residential over some insanely miraculous homes from there to Willow Creek. What a ride. Thanks for the vid~
@@tymesho I don't know if I talked about this in the video, but I am actually not a "local" to the region exactly. I first visited for a week in 2006, and visited a few more times, before living in Eureka for a year in 2019-2020, then visiting two more times. So I have been there enough times to get a feel for things, but I am not really local.
@@glowingfish Well, dOrK mE wouldn't think of THAT! LOL. Back then it was WAY countrified, hippie style. Folks were so mellow, though the gals didn't wash much. (kidding, kinda) That sandwich shop fed me for a couple years! Sangguiches were awesome for a good price. Just a great place to be a kid, let me tell ya'. I got lucky and became friends with some cats who grew up there. Crazy, but in a cool way. They showed me everything! Fish, I do thank ya' for jarring the old memories. (Also, this is when the very first buds of the Sinsemilla strain were being developed, buds as big as your forearm, and local freaks on the precipice of becoming rich beyond their dreams. The banana slugs never seen it comin', by gawd!
Westside Pizza
The one I went to was Paul's Live From New York Pizza, but I think there were other pizza restaurants I might have shown.
I was raised in Arcata, and have to thank you for showing the truth. Awesome sneery and the reason why. I will always call the "big school on the hill , Arcata Collage of the Redwoods. I left in 1961 and was shocked in 69 when I went back. And again in 1978, what a culture change. Liberals took over., I was shocked. But , now in 2023, I see what has happened. Not good, even for a small town like Arcata California.....
A
I don't know what you say in my video that made Arcata look "not good".
“Liberals took over” 😂 It’s always been a progressive community.
@@kingtrance307 There is nothing progressive about Arcata, unless you think we're progressing towards a homeless camp dominated by screaming college kids from some other county
I go here 👌 engineering very nice 👍.
Glad you like it! How long have you been there.
I've lived in Eureka since 1950 and attended HSC. Ever since Arcata started waving the Earth Flag above the American Flag I have stayed away and have no intentions of going back.
There seems to be a variety of opinions of the city, but that is why this video is here. This just shows a few hours of my experience.
How could any earthling be anti-earth flag, lol
@@heidiho3089 Well, Martians and their ilk are also welcome in my comment section! :)
No one will miss you either Steve.
@@kingtrance307 Hahaha! Most of them don't stay sober enough to miss anything.
I would NOT recommend this University, nor Arcata. Hellish parking, one of the worst Universities in the State. 46% graduation rate for 6yr. (4yr BA.. forget it!) homelessness at the University, security issues. It’s in the middle of nowhere but u can forget about bringing ur car, it’s cheaper to park in SF. Arcata&Eureka: crack, fentanyl, homelessness, one of the worst i hve ever seen.
A lotta students get out here attracted by “nature”, hyped up by “green” marketing schemes. Some get stuck out here, others move out. Job opportunities are rare.
“It’s a hippie nightmare!”
Nah, Ive lived here 23 YEARS...its improving all the time, along with all the homelessness and addicts, which are EVERYWHERE in America.. WE F'n LOVE Ourcata here, we dont need your opinion!
To be fair, a lot of tourist or university towns (and Arcata is both) have a bad side to them. After seeing all the nice parts, there can be a lot of problems. I've lived in Humboldt County and on the Oregon Coast, and it certainly has its disadvantages. In general, in my videos, I try to stay mostly positive. I'm not denying there are problems, but I usually like to show the good side.
@@glowingfish Hi @glowingfish. I respect your views. I moved here early 2019, I was really attracted by the climate and the University. I knew HSU had a bad rep, but I was totally sold on the transition to Polytech. The reality is completely different from what is advertised. HSU is doing a lotta marketing all over the BayArea and SoCal, to bring students to Humboldt, if HSU was upfront about the issues, students will come prepared. HSU is not even close to being a Polytech, it might get there in 10yrs, but it can't be a Polytech overnight, and they should definitely be upfront about that.
At the very least, HSU should be upfront about health care in Humboldt. This is the most underserved community I have come across. 2 hospitals, MadRiver and St.Josephs. From personal experience; I wouldn't go to St.Joseph for anything.
@@indigomcginnis4958 just making sure I understand what you're saying..
You do accept existence of the issues as I described it, but because u've been here for 23yrs and you feel like it's improving, I should stfu about what I'm seeing and experiencing ?? not all of us can afford 23yrs. I'm sure u love ur part of gentrified Arcata but Humboldt is also Fortuna, Mckinleyville, Eureka etc... I'm not even getting started on the blatant racism.Every POC I have met here has some nasty experience. " don't go to fortuna or Mac if you'r black.." common recommendation my friends have got from well meaning locals. We're all used to some form of that anywhere in country, but Humboldt is pretty late on those changes, one might even say 23-25yrs late.
@@RasTona_ Well, I can't speak a lot about the university. It has a nice campus. I think that most university students are mostly there for the access to natural resources and the unique setting, but I don't know what the academics are like.
You bring up a very good point about the lack of health care etc. It is something I have wanted to make a video about for a long time, but it would involve a lot of charts and diagrams. Humboldt County is in what the USDA calls a Frontier and Remote area, meaning that it is more than an hour from the boundary of a metro area with more than 50,000 people. Only about 5-10% of the US population lives in an area like that, and it is hard to conceptualize what that is like for people who haven't been to one. Because most "rural" Americans still live in an area where they have access to a lot of services. So especially someone coming from a place like the central valley of California, if someone's definition of a small town is Merced (which is small compared to San Francisco or LA), they are still used to having lots of hospitals and clinics to choose from. So it is hard to explain what it is like to be in a FAR area. I have certainly been in that situation myself---when I lived in Brookings, Oregon, and needed a root canal, the dentist told me there was no good options in the town, and I would have to go 100 miles to Grants Pass.
In a lot of ways, FAR areas like Humboldt County are like getting a puppy---people think it is charming and cute, but it is really a big commitment and responsibility. I agree that the university should probably prepare students more for what it is like to be there.
Also, for context, I have lots of other videos of communities from San Jose to San Juan, where I look at communities of different types and sizes, and those videos would put this into context.
