Haystacks provides the connection between the Great Gable group and the northern branch of the horseshoe. Immediately to the south east are Brandreth, Green Gable and Great Gable, forming the head of Ennerdale. North west are the well known trio of Buttermere fells, High Crag, High Stile and Red Pike.
The Buttermere-Ennerdale watershed descending from Brandreth is initially indistinct, running north west across a broad plateau. After one-half mile (1 km) it reaches the rocky protuberance of Great Round How, 1,817 ft (554 m), and then its character changes completely. The watershed narrows to fine ridge, steep enough on the Ennerdale side and rimmed by crags throughout above the head of Buttermere. The beauty of the scene is completed by a succession of rocky tops and nestling tarns, until the high point is reached at the western end. A sharp descent over rock now follows, leading to Scarth Gap, 1,460 ft (450 m), a walkers' pass between the two valleys. Beyond the ridge rises again to High Crag, a steep climb on scree.
The summit sits on a short rocky spine, set at right angles to the ridge. Both ends of the ridge have cairns, that at the northern end being the accepted summit. A lower parallel ridge lies just to the east. The view is excellent, the high points being Gable Crag on Great Gable and the western panorama of Ennerdale Water and High Crag.
Crummock Water and Buttermere are also well seen.
The summit has a number of tarns. The highest is just below the top, generally referred to as the summit tarn but officially unnamed. Halfway along the ridge is Innominate Tarn, a popular beauty spot with an indented rocky shore and a line of tiny islets. At the eastern end is Blackbeck Tarn, a long slender pool which overflows through a cleft in the crags.

Thanks for another great video Andy, Haystacks is always a favourite with the family but by a different route. Amazing how a slightly different route makes the fell feel like walking it for the first time again. Have added this to the list for this summer. Thanks again for the videos and the GPX. Stay safe and keep it going 🙂 ATB

Just watched another great video Andy, more happy lakes memories, I remember visiting the falls and the 2 bothies on a walk back in 2020, I parked at Honister slate mine and got the bus to Buttermere and walked back to the car via the lake and Fleetwith Pike, epic. You're lakes videos are probably one of my favourites now as I'm getting bored with all the wildcamping ones. Keep them coming.

Ah, Buttermere and its fells. A place I could spend the rest of eternity. There is something hauntingly beautiful about Innominate Tarn, especially with the right atmospherics. The waterfalls and pools look fantastic. I'm surprised the Instagram mob haven't got wind them yet 🤫🤫🤫. Another smashing video Andy. I really enjoyed it. Tell Tracey I usually fling my sticks before sliding down too ha ha. I always find it a bit tricky coming down off Haystacks but your path looked a bit easier. Perhaps I've been taking the wrong path down. Billy the mountain dog has no such problems. Four legged drive. You can't beat it.

Superb video and footage Andy. Just love Buttermere. Sensational views up towards the bothy and crags and so clear to see the paths and waterfalls. Ive never gone up that way but the path to the bothy looks a lot more interesting than the left hand one and gorgeous waterfalls an added bonus. Another one on the to do list! Ive done Haystacks but not Fleetwith Pike so can fit both it together hopefully. Cheers Andy, Tracey and Billy ATB

Another great video, guys. We love Haystacks and Warnscale Bothy - have been in there in fine weather and foul 😂😂. We're back home in Somerset after 4 weeks up in The Lakes. We managed to do 11 new Wainwrights so we're up to 179 now. Back up in September to hopefully collect a few more. This time, we went around to Wasdale and did Pillar, Scoat Fell, Steeple and Red Pike - that was a brilliant day - we didn't go near Dorehead Screes though 😂😂. Jill chucks her poles around when she's scrambling too 😂😂 ATB Brian and Jill 😊😊

I commented the same on Tracy's video, the route you came up is what I have planned as our descent on a Fleetwith/Haystacks route (up Fleetwith Edge, over to Black Star, Great Round How, and Haystacks). This route just looks class. Wanted to have the view down to Buttermere to finish that day out. We did Scarth Gap on our last hike last year after Red Pike to High Crag...in full clag. Looks like you had a great day for it.

Cracking video, Andy. It's been a long time since I've done that route up Haystacks via the pools (were there any rocks left in the stream bed after Billy's visit?!). One thing I love about your videos it reminds me of stuff I need to do again and new routes - even if my 'to do' list gets longer all the time, which is all your fault! LOL Super drone shots of Warnscale and the craggy face of Haystacks. I do love that piano music you choose (play?! 🤣) and you used for the bothy shots, and Tracey does well on the violins! And that path across the face of Haystacks has to be one of my favourite traverse paths, both for the tarns it passes and the view down the valley.
