I remember this game well. Liverpool were simply unstoppable. The passing and movement was surreal. The midfield quartet of Ray Kennedy, Jimmy Case, Terry Mc Dermott and Graeme Souness was the best midfield unit in British football history. They had power, aggression, steel and skill. All four of them were powerhouse players but they were brilliant individual players and would score regularly too. They were the nucleus of a magnificent team. I am so fortunate to have seen Liverpool live at Anfield, every two weeks from 1964 till 1984 when I left home.
Brilliant to see this; thank you. Arguably the greatest Liverpool team in an era of consistently outstanding teams. An era when there was so much parity between teams (no Arab billionaire sugar daddies) and yet Liverpool's dominance was unmatched. In a 9-year period between 1976-1984, Liverpool won 17 major trophies - 7 League Championships, 4 European Cups, 4 League Cups, 1 UEFA Cup, 1 UEFA Super Cup - 1 more trophy than Citeh has won in its entire history. This team won the League at a canter scoring 85 goals and conceding only 16 in a 42 game season - a record at that time. Although it is impossible to compare generations of teams I wonder what would be the result if this Liverpool team met the modern Citeh - I know who my money would be on. YNWA.
@paul smith Typical no-nothing comment. I'm not even going to bother putting you straight because you have already embarrassed yourself far too much for that. Just do a little bit of research before you post your ill-informed, simplistic prattle.
M8 you sound bitter! A bit jealous... Look up your football history on city before mentioning owners etc... The amount of money you have spent(even back then) in the Pl era you should of done better no excuses, you had the money, brought the players and so how come it's taken 30 years for you first title? Liverpool and utd are the only two clubs allowed too have money, buy players, no problem, no questions asked... When other clubs do it, its the same old mainstream media shite, sugar daddy owners, what a load of bull.... And you wonder why your club and fans are disliked! Mcfc4ever!
IMO the best Liverpool team Started season with Hughes as capt and by end he wasn't even in team Gone by next Paisley was ruthless Absolute Rolls Royce of a team
Been watching a couple of old matches with Liverpool now, and what to say about Kenny Dalglish - he wasn't very technical or even elegant, but always so absolutely effective and correct in all his choises, with quick dicisions, opening up for others and then so often also being on the right spot to score, with no unnecessary ego nonsense and making it look so easy. Must have been a dream to play with.
I agree with everything you said except the bit about not being very technical or elegant. Personally I think he was extremely technical (some of the goals he scored & the way he constantly brought others into the play required extreme technical quality) & I think he was very elegant with his running style, so easy on the eye the way he just drifts all across the pitch as though he owns it. I guess people see things differently.
He was extremely technical and elegant. His ball skill, turning on a sixpence, cutting inside etc is why he's my favorite British player of all time. He had an off day in this particular game - but he was very technical
Based on watching “a couple of old matches” you have descended from the heights to declare that Kenny Dalglish “wasn’t very technical or elegant”. Well, I’ve read it all now!
My point is that Dalglish was no typical dribbler or ball artist, like Pelé, Maradona or those guys. What he did was simple but highly effective, which doesn't necessarily mean easy. His best skills was an immense ability to be in the right position, receive and pass the ball on the best possible way, quickly and with top precision, and without any nonsense. He truly made the game flow, which absolutely is elegant in it's way. I have watched many Liverpool games through the years, ever since Shankly was in charge, but watching some again so many years after was a good reminder of how special he was. If anyone must misinterpret that, then go ahead.
The Man City players were Kenny Clements, Gary Owen and Ged Keegan. When this game was played in August 1978 Michael Owen had not even been born ! Kevin Keegan had left Liverpool a year earlier and Kenny Clements name is spelt ending with a ts and not a ce !
If Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan didn't buy City then they would be scrapping in the Championship or maybe even lower with all the other shit mediocre clubs & Pep wouldn't even know who Man City are. Admit it, you got extremely lucky so just be grateful. And BTW Liverpool were just toying with this City team, played them off their own park without getting out of second gear.
Very confusing. Man City have a player called Keegan and a player called Clemence. The Man City player called Clemence looks like Kevin Keegan. Liverpool no longer have a guy called Keegan, but their goalie is Clemence, and Liverpool have a guy called Kennedy on the left, while playing on the left is a guy called Kennedy.... AAAAAAGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

Always great to see these old matches. 22 real men all playing for the badge in stadia full of character and atmosphere
Maine Road was such a wonderful stadium..
These were the best times in English football, and two classic simplistic kits of the day on display. Miss these great times
The kits were great. A kind of purity to them.
This team was relentless. A machine that wouldn't stop.

LOL Man City have Clemence, Keegan and Owen.... confusing!
Yea - was surpriced to find Keegan at first, and then I saw what team.

them were the days
To think two weeks time after this they played at Forest in the European Cup
It's always been a nightmare playing Liverpool for as long as I can remember 🤦♂️we missed quite a few chances at the end their
A nightmare would be preferable, you can wake up from a nightmare, but you can’t from reality!
If Channon had taken it chances the score would have looked very different.
