You copied Coralina Unrein’s comment. How does it feel to copy a comment and act like you came up with it ? Here with an interview with Pretty little liars. *shoved a microphone into her mouth*
I think Marina is the type of artist who really masters their craft, she has combined her strenghts and made this record. I remember one interview in which she mentioned she can't belt like most pop female artists, instead she reinforces a really unique timbre and she's really confident on her lower/middle notes and falsetos/"lyrical" aproach (vowel shapes and melismas, etc). This record has surprised me as much as Froot. I also love the fact there's lot of guitars (which is very trendy and she knows that, a recored based only on this 70/80s sound trend would be boring cause I think this is kind of over) plus insane bass lines. The lyrics are deep but also funny, she doesn't take herself so serious, which is really necessary for a pop record imo. Favs: Venus Fly Trap, I love you but I love me more and New America.
@@voss9352 commercially maybe, but also her first two records she really didn’t have any creative control over. She wasn’t a fan of Electra Heart and how her record label made her write/sound. She has more control over what she does now, but that may have come with the risk of not having as many resources as she had with her previous records.
@@Katrina._. I have to disagree here too, I’ve been following her since the beginning, and I can say undoubtedly that her debut album the family jewels is extremely personal and unique. Her voice and lyrics on that album are what made me a fan in the first place.
The Family Jewels is still her best album ever made (and it was her debut lol). I dont think it can be topped, even if EH and FROOT have better production, TFJ is just too unique and weird in a good way.
not a bad review but I honestly love the more sentimental, ballad-infused approach that she does with Pandora's Box and Goodbye, she really excels at that kind of style
I'm probably biased because I'm such a huge fan of Marina's music but I love this album a lot. I thought the highlights (Purge the Poison, Ancient Dreams, Venus Fly Trap) were so great they overshadowed the weaker parts of the album (Flowers, Goodbye). Tho I definitely get your criticism, I'm just more lenient because of how much I enjoy the singles.
Listen deeply and seriously to The Family Jewels. It's some Kate Bush / Fiona Apple / Björk - level kinda shit. Seriously. No one understood it truly cause it was a mix of indie and pop that wasn't really accepted back then. I mean there is a song about killing a dog on there which serves as a metaphor for childhood trauma. Would love to hear your take on that album.
@@ghosty8745 "Guilty." She's just describing a dream in which she kills a dog, but it stands in for all the shame, guilt, and self-consciousness of her childhood and youth.
exactly!! The family jewels is easily one of the best albums of the 10s. I dont think the critics that reviewed it at the time really had the palate to appreciate the album
TFJ still stands as my favorite Marina album. It switches with Froot depending on my mood. Me and my husband agreed that Marina’s music was at its best when she was dealing with battling herself. And i know that sounds awful but it just seems as though her writing is so much more meaningful and hits way different than in her last 2 albums. Like Froot was her best attempt at writing songs about being happy and learning to love herself and those songs are amazing (I’m Not Hungry Anymore is one of her best songs period) but Love + Fear just was not at the caliber of her other songs and this album increased in quality of songwriting at some points but I just don’t think it ever met her first 3 albums. Marina knows how to write how she’s feeling when she doesn’t feel good and that’s why she connected so well with fans is because her writing was so cathartic to hear, it’s just not the same, when she’s writing about being happy it just doesn’t seem like she goes passed the surface, I wish she would kind of dig deeper like she does when she’s battling herself. I want her to be able to make music about how she feels, I want her to be happy of course, I just want to see her spend more time going passed the surface level of loving and accepting herself even if it means having to wait a long time for new music. I would love an album with songs similar to I’m Not Hungry Anymore, but she won’t even give that a full release :(
while i agree that the more upbeat tracks are the highlights of the album and man’s world is absolutely one of its best songs, i think flowers and goodbye closed the album off beautifully and are far from bland. definitely a 7 or 8/10 for me
Imo, this album's at least a 7 or an 8. I see it as a huge improvement over her last outing, Love + Fear, while despite it having some good tracks, it sounds watered down and each track sounding the same in terms of composition compared to her first three albums. I love how Marina is able to add social commentary in her lyrics without sounding forced, and the first half of this album really shines in that (disappointed that you didn't mention Venus Fly Trap since it is a BANGER). Maybe this is also the biased Marina stan in me, but I personally liked the piano ballads on the album. Goodbye is a huge grower on me, and I see it as a more refined and grown up version of some of her older songs sharing the same theme, such as Fear and Loathing from Electra Heart, and I'm Not Hungry Anymore, her unreleased song from Froot. Funny that you compare her to Lana when almost 95% of Marina's fanbase desperately want her to do a collab with Lana and how the both of them are friends irl and having somewhat similar aesthetics, lmao. Leading to my next point, I also see each of Marina's albums as growth in not only as a musical artist, but as a person as well. The Family Jewels, being my personal favorite from her, deals with her hating herself, and has a lot of complex themes and metaphors in each track, such as depression, alcohol addiction, childhood trauma, body image, living with a mental disorder (particularly anxiety and OCD) and trying to get by in the music industry. Electra Heart has her fighting with herself and coming to terms with her identity, and ultimately creating a persona that isn't her (there's a series of music videos that showcase Electra's storyline that's worth checking out), and also going for a more commercial pop-like sound (almost everyone on Tumblr ate this up back in the day, and that's where Marina garnered a lot of her fanbase from). Froot is her ultimately accepting herself and coming to terms with her happiness and self worth, and also the last two tracks on the album, Savages and Immortal, see a growth in her songwriting and also questioning human life and morality. Her last two albums, L+F and this, continue her growth in her self worth, and also moving away from a commercial pop sound and doing her own thing. L+F was a decent start, but Ancient Dreams really elevated that between composition and musical beats, with each song sounding different from the other, which I can safely say Ancient Dreams is a huge stepup in Marina's discography, although I do wish it was a bit longer. TL;DR: Ancient Dreams is a damn good album, and I humbly respect your opinion, Melon. Also really take a good look at Marina's discography aside from a passing glance to understand her growth in music and personality.
If you at least liked this album, especially the more up-tempo/anthemic tracks, I think you’d LOVE her first album ‘the family jewels’ and her third album ‘froot’.
It’s her shortest and most cohesive album yet, but I still wish it were more cohesive in theme. Starting off with such socially charged bangers and then ending with these less memorable heartbreak ballads, kind of disappointing. Still enjoyed the record overall though! The lead up to this album made me a fan
Actually the heartbreak ballads makes totally sense if you see that she's talking about the abusive relationship that ~opened up her pandora box~ for those themes that the character of the album is into now.
@@wadsonsousa4161 Guess I never thought of it that way. I can see what you’re saying, but even so, the first half of the album is still the strongest in my opinion
It's a pop anthem. I was listening to this album this morning and I was actually shocked about the lyrics. There's some heavy topics there. She's a great artist!
Never clicked so fast on a video in my life, you finally did it Anthony! You stopped neglecting the Queen and now I can finally stop forming my own opinion around her! Edit: I take that all back, how dare you give it a 6 and call it Marina's best album
Ancient Dreams is definitely the album I think is deserving of Marina’s rebrand. I love the return to her campy and quirky roots with her carefree attitude. I am proud of her bc Love + Fear definitely let me down as a fan (aside from Orange Trees, she snapped on that one).
I personally preferred the ballads to some of her other songs, like I LOVED Pandora's Box and Goodbye, but wasn't a big fan of Purge the Poison (probably going to get slander for that, but might grow to like it) or New America/Man's World. Each to their own though :) Oh, and Venus Fly Trap ROCKS. EDIT: I love quirk lmao - never saw it as a bad thing
It's fine! I absolutely love Purge the Poison, but I believe this album is so brilliant that it talks to people of all ages, cultures etc.. Most of the people my age I know like Marina, loves PTP, and then some of the younger ones like other songs better, etc.. I like these reviews and I believe it's genuine, but let's remember that his review comes from his experience with the album. For which every person has a different one.
@@Roter-MooN Absolutely - and to be fair, my opinions on songs change all the time. PTP isn't awful at all, don't get me wrong, I LOVE the message, it's just not my favourite melody of hers. This is the thing about music, it's so subjective, which makes it hard to review. But scratch what I said about Man's World - it is good ahah, just got overshadowed a bit by some of the others imo
Dunno why the ballads are considered to be the weak part of the album. Yes, they're not bangers and one could argue that it's not what you'd expect after an explosive and powerful first half, but I really think that one half compliments the other. As if the 2nd half, wants to focus on the emotions of the artist and her inner world, instead of, you know, the actual world. And even though the melodies and the lyrics maybe are a bit repetitive, I strongly believe that each and every song has a purpose and has something different to say. And all that leads to Goodbye, a g r e a t song about self acceptance, forgiving and moving on. She says Goodbye to her former self and now she's wiser, more (emotionally) mature and ready to conquer the world, as promised in the 1st half of the album. Great piece of art, loved every single bit and one of my favourite projects of this year...
@@alexchatzi9107 Really good analysis - like that a lot. The ballads definitely fit within the album of ancient dreams (some of these ancient dreams of Marina's could allude to past relationships and "ancient" feelings of wanting a future with this man). I liked that after all these songs with strong messages, she came back to very personal feelings, and closed out with simpler melodies. We can talk about worldwide issues all we want (it's incredibly important), but we shouldn't neglect our own individual selves and needs. It seems as though the natural/environmental imagery throughout - 'Venus Fly Trap', 'Flowers' etc - ties the self to the wider world. We can only help solve all these issues if we grow as people first, and take care of our own emotional states.
Ok Melon I'm gonna let you finish but Marina had just released one of the best pop album of 2021! and it's full of bangers. I do agree with some of the points you made but being an old Marina's diamond this record is by far superior to L+F and has more continuity with TFJ, Electra Heart and Froot. Is a strong 7 to a light 8 for me
The Family Jewels and Electra Heart will never be topped. Those two records changed my life and the way I listen to music. Froot was her last decent record, but these latest two albums just don't hit the same way.
It was the other way round for me. I appreciated her so much for the anthems but the album ended with all these cliche break up songs and I was like... kay.
It's a Lockdown album that explores the personal and the political. Marina said lockdowns gave her time to self reflect on the sociopolitical state of things as well as her own personal life (she moved continent and split with her boyfriend). This album captures that experience. It can't be purely politically-charged because the personal is just as important.
Honestly, I am a giant Marina fan, and I love this album, but everyone saying it deserves a 7 or 8 are just being bias. The singles are stellar, definitely some of her better work.
this is probably never gonna be seen but I really enjoy your content even if I don't agree with every rating you give. being able to express my music opinions and discuss with a fanbase that seems to get me and won't get hurt if I dont like something they love. i hope you know how much your channel means to me. love you melon, never stop making great videos.
@@nellies that song made me sob on first listen... at the first few seconds i wasnt a fan of the instrumental but as soon as the second goodbye hit i was in love. i think the second verse really secures the track as one of my favourites from her.
I feel like Marina’s political critique lyrics are forced and it feels quite off and disconnected from the real world. Still pretty good album though, shout out to I Love You But I Love Me More and Venus Fly Trap.
yeah, I think it would have been cool if her takes weren't so shallow. More of a 💕girlboss💕 moment than an actual thoughtful critique. It kind of felt like Lana del rey's woke posts: oddly reactionary.
yeah, that's what puts me off from this one. great production, great singing, hamfisted lyrics that come across as more tone-deaf than anything. really love her high notes on highly emotional people though.
@@jiribb9300 Yeah, but for me, someone who listens to songs with political or social commentary in them, felt Marina’s lyrics like she just want’s to attract audience of people that are against opression instead of actually making genuine lyrics about problems in society. Peak was her ,,capitalism made us poor” when she literally has a job and millions thanks to current system
Mmm, I thought this was a solid 8, never heard of her before I checked this album out recently and I was pleasantly surprised. I liked the lyrical topics she was exploring too, not used to that from music that sounds like this.
damn i really wanted to be mad at you for this one melon but unfortunately i agree, this album is a little disjointed - stacking the singles in the first half with none of the other songs in the second half being anywhere near as good was a weird choice. the singles are absolute bops but the album as a whole is just ok.
I agree to a fault, I would have given a 7 because I really like the musical blend she goes for. A lot of the poppier songs remind me of mid-2000's dance music mixed with 80's throwback instrumentals. Though I also agree it's too easy to find tracks like these out there in the world that do the vibe better. Marina has always followed her own weird muse into 1,000,000 different directions, and I respect her for it.
pandoras box and goodbye were actually my favorite tracks haha. They remind me of family jewels and I guess I just don't listen to enough pop music to have the problems you were having with them
Good review. I think I'd have it a bit higher, somewhere in the 7 or light 8 range, but I also might have just leaned heavily on the songs I liked. You've given me new things to think about on the next listen.
I love it, probably an 8 for me. I can definitely see the faults, but I find them easy to look past. I think I'm especially happy with it as it's coming straight after my least favourite of her projects.
So happy for this review. I find myself agreeing with most of your points and finding some of the ballads a bit melodically shallow as well (love the messages though). For me the first part of the album is absolute perfection. The title track and Venus Fly Trap being my favorites. Venus almost makes me want to take over the world - literally get injected with a lot of motivation and bad bitch vibes. The two last tracks were sadly underwhelming to me as well, but overall I absolutely enjoyed the album and Marina sounds better than ever. I can see this becoming my favorite of hers with time. Great vibes
Now i kind of agree in your opinion but idk man the highlights on this album are really HIGHLIGHTS you know? I can't give this album less than a 7 but i get your point, thanks for the review as always
I felt heavy Sinead O'Connor vibes coming from this record, but yeah overall I found it to be very enthralling and moving and while the lowkey parts weren't my favorite, some of them did hit for me and I ended being pleased by this record.
Hey Anthony, i honestly have to agree with you on most aspects that you touched on with this album. Honestly felt like she didn't really commit her biting tone and criticism throughout the entirety of the album. Being such a huge fan of Marina, her more politically charged songs on here really brought me back to the "Family Jewels" era of her music. It seems after Purge the Poison, she kind of peters out into what she was doing on Love + Fear, an album that I would give a 5/10 to. I honestly would give this project a 7/10 because when it bangs, it bangs super hard, but when it dials itself back, I feel as though she's being too safe. I'm glad you're finally covering her though, although I'd like to here your thoughts on her earlier works

yeah one part of it is like uobeat social critism songs and the others are breakup songs
So basically he liked everything rocky and hated all 4 ballads??? What does he have against ballads, they were beautiful
Not as hitting and unique as her anthems
I personally preferred the ballads to some of her other songs, like I LOVED Pandora's Box and Goodbye, but wasn't a big fan of Purge the Poison (probably going to get slander for that, but might grow to like it) or New America/Man's World. Each to their own though :) Oh, and Venus Fly Trap ROCKS.
EDIT: I love quirk lmao - never saw it as a bad thing
Strange woman
I personally think it’s her best project overall. Not her best in terms of vocally, but in every other aspect I think it for sure is her best.
Weird way to say 10/10
Marina was correct, I don't wanna live in a man's world anymore 🎶🎶🎶
I think her ballad lyrics were more sincere and well thought out than some of the rowdier tracks... Even if they were simple musically.
It was the other way round for me. I appreciated her so much for the anthems but the album ended with all these cliche break up songs and I was like... kay.
This review just killed a thousand of gay men.
Thank goodness! A marina fan who can think for themselves!
melon has officially stopped neglecting marina but has officially started neglecting venus fly trap
this is probably never gonna be seen but I really enjoy your content even if I don't agree with every rating you give. being able to express my music opinions and discuss with a fanbase that seems to get me and won't get hurt if I dont like something they love. i hope you know how much your channel means to me. love you melon, never stop making great videos.
Ur comment is so wholesome :3
TASTELESSSS!
goodbye is literally one of the best songs on this album...
Ikr
It was my first fav
@@sofiaaaaa888 me too!!
@@nellies that song made me sob on first listen... at the first few seconds i wasnt a fan of the instrumental but as soon as the second goodbye hit i was in love. i think the second verse really secures the track as one of my favourites from her.
Do a redux review of emotion by Carly Rae jepsen and give it a 10
Hi Mikan Tsumiki, SHSL Baseball Star
Can we all just forget that Love + Fear happened? She made up for it with ADIAML
I enjoyed the subtlety she had an Electra Heart. These lyrics are too literal.
yeah, that's what puts me off from this one. great production, great singing, hamfisted lyrics that come across as more tone-deaf than anything. really love her high notes on highly emotional people though.
R u kidding? The power anthems are what I loved the most about this record. She was doing something different from what ppl usually sing about in pop
Damn I really was hoping for a strong 7 - light 8, maybe the next album. I am still shocked however at Goodbye being the least fav damn
Same :(
I agree to a fault, I would have given a 7 because I really like the musical blend she goes for. A lot of the poppier songs remind me of mid-2000's dance music mixed with 80's throwback instrumentals. Though I also agree it's too easy to find tracks like these out there in the world that do the vibe better. Marina has always followed her own weird muse into 1,000,000 different directions, and I respect her for it.
for me personally it was an 8 and one of my favorite albums of hers. i expected at least a 7 smh
pandoras box and goodbye were actually my favorite tracks haha.
REVIEW THE FAMILY JEWELS
THINK, MELON. Why would you have ancient dreams if you’ve been awake for several years busily reviewing music?
Why do I feel the need to argue about the 6 even if I haven't listened to the album?
because the cover alone guarantees a 7
OMG. THIS IS MY FAV ALBUM THIS YEAR 😭
ALBUM OF THE YEAR! I SAID WHAT I SAID AND I MEANT WHAT I SAID
Who’s seeing her in concert next year?
This is my favourite album of 2021 so far
I love it, probably an 8 for me. I can definitely see the faults, but I find them easy to look past.
I think I'm especially happy with it as it's coming straight after my least favourite of her projects.
I saw it as a Froot 2.0. A return to form for me as it felt more memorable then the last record.
Great vibes
did I just hear melon use the word camp ??? MELONS AN ALLY CONFIRMED /lh
melon is a very strong ally ⭐
Still struggling without And The Diamonds
I think Froot was her Magnus opum
Please go back and review some of her older albums!
my girlfriend is gonna be pissed
Now i kind of agree in your opinion but idk man the highlights on this album are really HIGHLIGHTS you know? I can't give this album less than a 7 but i get your point, thanks for the review as always
Am I the only one who thinks the new America chorus sounds exactly like Froot (another marina song)
No, I do too!!
froot’s chorus is incredible, the one in the new american don’t even come close
Marina gave us a near perfect album this year my guy
More like a 8’s dream in a 6’s land
We need to purge the melon from our system 😤
he really gave this a 6 and didn't even mention venus fly trap? where's the taste??
Melon thanks so much for reviewing this! Now please review Audrey nuna's mixtape, Qveen herby and Griff's mixtape One Foot In Front of the Other for the YUNO Review please and thank you...
FIRE ALBUM LETS GO but where was Venus Fly Trap in favorites bro
IM SAYIN 😭😭 easily the best song on the album
i somewhat agree with the score but dude he didn’t even mention VFT
The Highlights are few and far between, wdym the first half is non stop bangers and the later half, while not my favorite material, is nowhere near skip worthy. Was hoping for at least a 7 from u, but at the very least you reviewed it.
This might be the first time I've heard someone call Love + Fear ambitious 😅
I don't wanna live in melons beautiful dark twisted fantasy anymore
omg it's the first time he's reviewed Marina, right?
"It's quirky and tumblr"
Worst review yet, Fantanthony
Ew yeah. She's too cool to be compared tp Tumblr.
I didnt think there was such a thing as a wrong opinion, but here we are
I’m screaming, not Cleopatra 2525 😂❤
It took Marina writing a highly left-leaning political album for Melon to review her work lol
Anthony, you're sounding better today! Hope you are feeling better now.
Songs were pretty catchy but the lyrics sounded like some political twitter poetry
Yeah… marina is very much giving white saviour complex whenever she talks about these subjects. It’s why I couldn’t stand a good portion of love + fear
