I’ve been a flat bedder since last October, it’s definitely hard work but I get a great sense of mission accomplishment when I’m running down the road with a secured, tarped load. Plus it’s keeping me in good shape and from getting fat while trucking. If you’re thinking about coming to flatbed, make the commitment in your mind that you’re all in before you start day 1 of training. I’d recommend Maverick or TMC or Melton to get your start, you’ll definitely want some solid training before you go down the road hauling a 48,000 pound steel coil. Good luck, it’s actually a great job, the tarping really ain’t that bad. Takes me less than 2 hours to strap or chain, and tarp. It usually takes less than an hour to get loaded or unloaded, like someone else on here said, the consignee is usually waiting for me to untarp.

Give me a step, detach, or a stretch any day. FYI flat beds don't pay lumper fee's either. When I started driving I hauled a load 650 700 miles the lumper fee's for both load and unload were over a hundred dollars more than I got paid as a company driver to haul it. Looking at it now there’s an even bigger reason. Lack of proper training. They’ll throw you into a 2-4 day class and expect you to know how to do everything. Flatbed is very hands on, need more hands on class training. Stretch it to 5 days minimum, first day first half of class teach about the straps chains weight limit each supports and distance between each strap to be DOT legal. After that 4 1/2 days minimum of outside practice on things like coils, heavy equipment, lumber loads metal loads speciality loads. Just cut the Execs pay for a few months so they can afford to have this extra stuff for their classes.

agree with 1. I hate tarping. especially for customers that require it on all loads simple because "we want the wrappers to arrive clean." when its 100° outside and you want a full load tarped with no rain in the forecast. im getting a load from someone else.
I don't mind strapping and chaining. part of the job. keeps me fit.
I love overdementional stuff. long as its not tarped too . I've done over weight, over height, lots of over width (up to 12.5' wide), and overlength (up to 80').
I've spent more time at customers when I pulled box van than I ever have with a flatbed. even when tarped. plus flatbed don't have lumper fees.
oregon flatbedder here. 8 axle setup. (4&4) 62/65k lbs loads and 102/105.5k gross plenty.

I run a small earthmoving business, so I'm a defacto flatbed truck driver. As others have said it's great exercise.
I suffered serious back pain for 30 years (6 damaged disks in my lower back) before I started this work and the physical exercise of loading and unloading, tying down etc has cured that for me (pain free for two years). So I'd drive flatbed all day if I was just driving.

I work for a company in Germany that delivers construction materials with side-kid trailers without covering and anti-slip beds.
Since the police can see the parts of the freight which sit higher then the side-kids of the trailer, they can check your Freight and how you secured the freight in a drive-by.
I am diving for 4 months now and I have multiple incidents where police or German Freight-Transportation-Authority sped past me just to pulled over the curtainsider in front of me. And when they pull you over, they also check for defects on your vehicle and your driving records.
Which means...If you are driving a truck where your load is visible to the authorities, like on flatbeds, and you properly secure your payload, you have much less to worry from them, because they don't pull you over in the first place.

Let's not forget the weather elements that accompany the work with the flatbed. And then the region that you pick up in or deliver to. Wind, rain, heat, dust, snow, and ice just can't be healthy for your body to withstand the constant changes that quickly, in the time that it takes to do the work of a flatbed. It's nice to just jump out and close the doors and ride.

  • @michealdufour617

I used to do flat bed and the number 1 reason why I won't do it again is because of the amount of time it takes to tarp which effects your drive clock and when you are putting on the 2nd tarp they consider it as the 2nd part of the 1st tarp which means they don't want to pay you for putting on 2 tarps and you better believe the 2nd tarp also burns your drive clock. I drive from 500 to 800 miles a day as a dry van truck driver and I make way more money working less than I did doing flat bed. I had to bust my butt off just to make $1,200.00 a week as a flat bed driver. Now I make from $1,500.00 to $2,500.00 as a dry van driver and I pick up and drop off preloaded trailers and work way less and make way more money than I did as a flatbed truck driver.

When I did flat bed, wait time wasn't a issue, load securement was fairly easily, tarping was ok, but really hated lumber tarps and bad weather.
The true issues are with carriers,
Knuckle head dispatchers who don't know anything except what a screen tells them. Companies who take their driver's for granted.

I just did 9 months flatbed at age 62 after doing van, reefer, hazmat. Albeit few tarp loads. I got the Guillain-Barre syndrome from J&J vaccine just after starting flatbedding again, hardest year trucking of my life, and I am taking a brief early retirement. Hope to return to steering wheel holding soon.
NUMBER ONE REASON: since 2006 the safety situation with shippers and receivers has gotten too hazardous. Construction companies worst. They hire insanely mean ex-cons, and fill the slots with anything with an empty head to slap a hard hat on.
Apply OSHA safety regs to trucking, Brandon, dammit. And make trucking companies back me up in the field. I miss the old I.C.C. Police. I actually got poked in the back twice by lift truck operators this year! Never happened 20 years ago. I lost count of times stuff was thrown down on me and hard hat saved my life.
I am also still healing from injuries caused by these Generation-Duh manliness = meaness, hawhaw boys.
NUMBER 2 REASON: shippers do know how to load trucks, but intentionally load illegally and impossible to secure. (hawhaw) so reload/fixing loads and securement was taking as long as the travel time. Flatbed load distances are mostly one day travel time, so lower wage by mileage pay, harder work.
