- 5 Watch Brands That Lose A Lot Of Value ! - Federico Talks Watches
In today's episode of Federico Talks Watches I talk about watches that are probably best bought pre-owned. Watches and watch brands that lose a lot of value from their retail price. Watch brands like Breitling, IWC, Ulysse Narden, Baume Mercier and Zenith. Great watches and brands but that are much better deals if they are purchased pre-owned. Let me know what you guys think in the comments section below.

Ulysse Nardin is considered as Haute Horlogerie. All of their watches use in-house movements and the aesthetics are by far one of the best. Won countless number of awards in the past and consistently made into the finals of almost any watchmaking competition or awards.
Off to a TJ Maxx to buy my Breitling.
I saw a Rolex at Costco.. lol
I follow
I concur. It's a great time to pick up a deal on these softer brands, especially IWC, Zenith and Breitling. You're better off grabbing a deal on one of those while they are cheap than paying over list for Rolex
UN and Zenith are some of my favorite brands, underrated but very charming designs and good pedigree.
Hublot are tanking also after purchase. Easy to get a 30k watch used for half.
yep, and you'll still lose 50% when you go to sell it
So isn’t that buying a $15K watch for $15K? 😳
I like that you listed swiss watches below this video for those of us that can only afford to spend $500 on a watch. I recently spent $435 for a Tissot PRC200 Powermatic 80 that is a more dressy alternative to the Hamilton Khaki King I bought a couple of years ago. Being retired I can't afford an Omega or Rolex which would be pretentious to wear in flyover country. Thanks for the great information. Please keep these snippet s of watch knowledge coming.
You only lose if you sell, I never sell so I never lose and what my next of kin do with them well I don't care.
You just can't find another dumber to pay for your mistake. What a winner
True.
I tend to agree on B&M although I don't own one anymore since their more interesting designs are dress watch imo. However, I had several occasions (fairly recently) to deal with B&M customer service and they were outstanding. The best I've come across.
I knew you’d be spot on when I saw ulysses nardin in the thumbnail. 😂
The Time Teller who dis? ;)
Captain 69 are you asking who he is? He is one of the most successful watch youtubers. He probably gets more views than the Urban Gentry.
Also probably doesn't buy his views like the Urban fraud.
The Casual Watch Reviewer omg guys! I know who this is!! I’m a big fan of him! I’m just messing around! Hahahaha
James Brown ???
Good video. You're a real asset to watch enthusiasts everywhere. Especially a relative newcomer like myself even though I turn 58 in a few months. Keep up the great work.
This dude sucks and needs to stop teddy all the way!!!!
I would love to hear your opinion on Frederique Constant
Tag has to be the gold standard for watches that aren't worth half their retail.
yeah, when I'm on vacation, I always check out a TAG boutique to have a good laugh over their retail prices.
IWC, Zenith, Ulysse Nardin and Baume et Mercier are all my favorites. Losing value makes it a good purchase for us collectors.
Discount stores like Kohls, j c penneys and dillards sell the same Bulova watches for 10 % of the prices you find at jewelry stores. Watch mark up is rediculously high. Thanks for the video mr. Frederico!
My watch dealer says he can't offer more than 30% on my IWC watch I bought 28 months ago. He said it's almost like there is no real life to resale IWC
Interesting. But then he'll sell it for 70-80% of the original price
Then look for a second opinion...
@@ragnarbluechip8795 Correction. He will TRY to sell it for 70% and end up accepting 50%.
Great video Fed.....please turn it into a series. Price is so important. These are once in a lifetime purchases for most people. Dont hold back pushing Delraywatch...you earn it!!
Every other watch brand loses value once you buy it from retail, that's simply how the market works, similar to cars. Just because the watches lose value does not necessarily mean the brand is going down. Apart from Rolex and some very specific watches from very few brands, all watches and brands tend to lose value.
You seem to completely understand how to keep your videos short for your viewers. Never ramble on about nothing, really appreciate that.
What I love about your videos is your absolute enthusiasm, exuberance and your love of story and craftsmanship!
That was a very nice comment. Shame that most of the people around here never get an answer.
I think the king of this discussion is definitely U-Boat. Literally 85% discounts on the grey market lol
Mad support Fed. Keep it coming.
Btw. Picked up a nice IWC Aquatimer for $2800. Was minty pre owned. Totally satisfied and it gets plenty of wrist time.
Comfy on the rubber strap.
Good video. I also went on your website and was shocked to find that you have better prices than a lot of pre owned sites. You’ve earned a subscriber and a customer.
Good video. Thanks Federico. The problem for the Swiss watch industry is that the retail prices of all of them is way to high for what you get. Besides a sinking economy that is why their sales have plummeted.
I love Breitling and just ordered my third one, but I won‘t buy it from an AD either. The depreciation is just too high, so why buy a Chronomat for 7.900 € from an AD (or let‘s say 6.500 € after bargaining) when you can get it around 5.500 € new full set. But for that money, they are REALLY worth it. The B01 is a fantastic movement and I personally think they look great, too.
Very informative! Specially for me who is just about to get into watch collection... being a super techie guys, i am amazed at the variables to consider when buying collectors watches... love your video reviews! Keep them coming... cheers !
Federico is a legend hands down
I'm also surprised about Baume et Mercier. I think they make some great watches
You just named three of my favourite brands ever, especially Zenith. By the way awesome video as usual!
Thats a good thing! You can get some awesome deals!
I had a pre LVMH Zenith elite chronomaster 18K bought in 2001. A lovely watch although finishing wasn't perfect. At the time Zenith was highly rated as an 'affordable' brand with great heritage, award winning movements, in house manufacture etc. I sold it last year, but boy did i struggle to find a dealer who was interested. Eventually got less than a grand part exchange for it, even though an equivalent new model Elite was in the window priced at over £9000.
the Moser Perpetual 1 Rose Gold by H. Moser & Cie is definitely one of them.
Breitling and IWC havent dropped, they just needed to lower prices because Rolex is popular among social media icons. Guaranteed, once the new social media watch craze ends, the cheap IWC and in-house Breitlings will go for more than Rolexes made the same year. When IWC is in the toilet, there is something wrong with the market, not the brand
Uneducated watch buyers.
Aside the Breitling Navitimer, the one watch I bought and is very useful in my life is the Breitling Bentley B05 Unitime watch for world travel as well as conducting international business.
Indeed…conducting international business without the Breitling Bentley on your wrist…truly is virtually unthinkable.
thanks fedrico, you should do this more often!!
I can honestly say that id have no problem paying full pop for a Brietling Navitimer, a Ulysses Nardin, and a IWC Porteguese. Those are forwver watches for me.
I’m only buying a breitling because I love the navitimer (specifically the 38mm with the 18k rose gold bezel) and I don’t plan on selling it. 😂
You left out Girard Perregaux, Chopard and Roger Dubuis which are in my mind great used buys especially in a world where sports Rolex, sport Patek and sports AP watches are going for over list price. Chopard, Roger Dubuis and now Bulgari present good ways to get micro-rotor movements.
Please make this a series with different price points. Starting from $1k and upwards maybe.
Really useful vid and REALLY useful comments. Technology has always struggled to keep pace with emotion! Thanks all.
I actually like all these brands, except Beaume... Some great values there! I just recently picked up Breitling Superocean Heritage 42mm
Love the mesh!
If you don't mind me asking how much you paid for yours ? I'm in the market to buy the exact same watch.
Try grinding hard with cash at an AD, perhaps you could score one at $3k. Have it (mesh), love it.
I think the worst of all are Franck Muller and Hublot ...
mradmz20 The good thing about these 2 brands are that they dont try too hard to entertain all. They are dedicated and invlolved into thier own areas making these 2 brands appealling to a small group of clients. I mean wtf is Zenith or IWC coming up with a submarainer line?
tq yu I agree all they did was homage watches that replicate the true collectors..
and Bremont.
Pawnshops around my place take only Rolex, Omega, Tudor, Cartier, and Frank Muller lol. Seems they've judged my market quite differently. Not much variety for my taste.
Those are fashion watches for rich want to be with no heritage.
I love that Baum & Mecier triple date moonphase. Can one find that for cheap? I keep seeing the for $3k, which does not seem to impress me.
The B&M Capleand Chrono is a beautiful watch but their pricing reminds me of Invicta. $4500 MSRP but you can have for the low low price today of $1500. Makes me think of the SNL Bass-0-Matic skit when I think of that. I think a couple Holiday seasons ago you could pick them up on the gray market for less than $1000 even.
I think their "deep discount" is more reflective of their ridiculous starting MSRP.
Thank you for the great content. Do you think the hit to Breitling spreads across the product line or could certain models, such as the B01 43 and 46 Navitimers be a better bet long term?
Where can I get a Navitimer for . 30 cents or 40 cents on the dollar. Im in
Great topic Fed - good content for bargain hunting. Its like having a friend in the bussiness. Thanks again. 👍
i love Panerai and Ulysses Nardin and Iwc.
The record is held by Maurice Lacroix. Horror story. Some models retail for 1.800 Euro and you can pick them up three weeks later on Ebay for 450 ...
I had a masterpiece date i got grey market for 850, sold it a year later on ebay for 600. retail price? 2,700. "Taking a hit" is a gross understatement with that brand. Beautiful watches though, that case was superbly finished and was always complimented when I wore it, just make sure you don't pay retail.
Braume Mercier is among my all time favorite brands
you know tag is the worst when it doesn’t even make the list
Baume Just came out with their 1st in house movement 5 day power reserve $2900 not bad for Baume
I have one of these 5 day Baume et Merciers along with others. They really make some awesome and quality pieces.
Hello Federico, First of all thank you for all your videos, I have learned a lot from you.
I don't know if this is the correct video to ask you this question, but I wanted to ask if you have any experience of shipping watches to Europe? to be exact Croatia. I often see some great watches in your collection.
Best regards
Thanks for the helpful information. This video made me a better consumer.
Probably easier to name that brands that May hold their value......if Rolex turned the supply tap on they would probably join the list ..99% of watches will lose you money but if you buy right and from the right dealers then you can reduce the hit and just enjoy your Horology and stop getting hung up on its residual value....
Hi Fed, probably it will make great series if you can make comparison between specific models within a brand, which model tend to increase in value, keep or loosing one, and to make it more interesting, put some percentage estimation on it. Thank you for the great content!
The fact is all watches lose tremendous value, they are not for investment unless you are super lucky and of course rich to buy very rare watches to begin with ...
Watches are just like cars, both lose tremendous value in the very moment they´re purchased. The moment a person buys a watch and resale it without even wearing it, it has already lost about 20% of the value. Same goes to cars.
Not true, if you know what you are buying, and have a good knowledge as to how they resale. You can make money. Sometimes you may be forced to sell at a loss, but it's not like opportunities do not exist.
the only profit you get from watches is if you're a dealer)
@@reubenbaker2867I agree that you have to know what you are buying. If you bought an daewoo10 years ago, that was a bad investment. if you bought a honda 15 yrs ago, guess what? is a good investment because even if it has 200K miles. people want it, the Daewoo not so much. I bought a Rolex GMT2 coke bezel in 2005, guess what? its a good investment.
@@boffen1I agree that you can make money with some watch models. I sold a seamaster omega used to a 3rd owner for more than what I paid at the time I bought it from the 2nd owner. I made money, I bought a rolex GMT2 in 2005.
Zenith are really getting that act together. Getting rid of poor outlets etc .there movements are as good as any in the price bracket and I can only see them getting better
Shouldn't Omega be in the top 5? you can get most of their watches for like 40% on the grey. Which is great. I picked up a Speedmaster for like $2900, that's 2k under retail! It's on par with the Breitlings
Todd Stoilov which grey market dealer?!
05reddragon05 watchmaxx
Portuguese, Pilot, El Primero and Navimeter are a must in any serious collection imo.
I really like the ingenieur personally, it resembles the VC Overseas which I'm a big fan too
I liked this one. Thank you for keeping us in the know.
In buying a name brand watch, one buys the sizzle and not the steak! If a brand becomes more fashionable, or popular, it is usually due to advertising hype and not the quality of the movement.
Conversely, the lack of hype will effect the popularity of a brand.( When is last time you saw an advertisement for Atlantic watches ? ) It is the same in the Art World; when an Artist become more popular ( and their work gets expensive ) it is not due to the quality of the work. When a quality watch brand falls out of fashion, it becomes a buyers market.
Buy your ZENITH now because they are going up!
Except some weird exceptions, I don't think we should buy any retail watch, to start with. Preowned ones almost always do hold value pretty well. What's the point of paying a retail price?
I’ve been watching prices on the Superocean Heritage for a year and haven’t seen any drop. I wish it would 😉. At least temporarily.
I only buy watches I like. I take all the hit up front. I'm not bothered about resale value. Maybe if I had rolexes I would, but there are great mid price point watches out there.
I just bought a brand new Breitling Colt Chronograph at 40% off
My mom and dad got engaged in 1960. They exchanged two Zenith watches (18kt gold bands). I think my mom said she paid $300 for my dads watch which was very very expensive in 1960. Today the watch is appraised at $5k. What’s the present value of $300 from 1960? $4900!! Get the picture. Lol
Sir, what about Tissot?
I would say that you discussed medium priced watches. The more expensive they are, the more you lose. 20 years ago I bought gold Breguet Marine. It's list price was 16 800 Swiss Francs. I bought it from grey dealer for 12 300. 3 month ago I sold it at Antiquarum auction. The buyer payed 6500, I got 4500 net. This is the real situation. Besides you must know that such watches are far from accurate and require servicing every several years which costs about 1000. So it is a fake treasure. Only Rolex keeps its price. I am selling now a 10 years old Rolex GMT II and hope to get my money back, though I also payed 1000 for the service.
why was your rolex service so expensive?
I had a crown repaired on GMT2 and I had the service done after 11 years of purchasing the watch new for under $850 in NYC at the Rolex Service Center.
What do you think about the Breitling B2 Chronograph A42362. I picked one up with papers and box looks like I just got it at the Breitling store for $1,700
Good advice and content. Buying a watch is like buying a car. Let someone else take the depreciation. Do you think people are just getting tired of large watches and watches that have multiple complications on them?
Thanks and keep up the good work👍
Charlie Brewer I know I am. Years ago I was so into the bigger size and complications. Now I mostly prefer divers with no more than a date if anything. IMHO, complications mess up the asthetics of the dial. Plus my size preference is more modest now (given my 6.75 in wrist) I would like not to go more than 42mm but would go 43mm if the lugs are angled right so it wears smaller. 41mm is just right.
do you recommend buying an endeavour big date from H.moser I love the watch and the movement but hesitated about buying it?thank you in advance
He is right abt IWC... it's overpriced ((
A lot of watches are overpriced
Thank you for your great videos!
Although I’m not buying one, I had the impression that it would be the perfect time to buy a Breitling as they’re so cheap right now that they can’t get any cheaper, especially used ones. But yes, buying one from a Breitling boutique would be quite stupid.
But of a haphazard list IMHO, but what these brands do tend to have in common is quite an inflated line-up...
That said, I believe you are looking at this issue the wrong way: Mass-produced consumer goods losing value once out of the boutique (which for me includes the grey market) is the rule, not the exception ;-)
I was kicking the tires on a B&M Clifton this past weekend I was really impressed. Where is a good place to look for a deal on one?
Hi Fed! I'm a huge fan of your channel. What do you think about Hublot? In particular, the Hublot Clasic Fusion. Take care
Good video and analisis. Many other brand still keep insane high prices. Hopefully they will keep building nice and valuable prices. ÍMO prices should drop slowly but consistently....
What are your thoughts on Franck Muller who were huge in the 2000’s?
You forgot Hublot!!
Rolex appreciation can be deceptive. I sold my GMT Master II in the early 90s for $3k. The money went into a S&P 500 ETF, today worth $18k+.
I can easily replace my GMT and still have $10k in the bank. Even the Tudor Chronometer I sold for $500 way back when they were not nearly as hot as now is even with my ETF. And that includes a 10 year recession with no market growth at all.
Sam whats the point? You cant wear an S&P fund....watches are toys.
Damn, wish I could find a Breitling (even a quartz) at TJ Max. Had never seen anything in their cases over $400.
Great content as always Fed! About a year or so ago I picked up a GP WWTC Shadow...probably the nicest in the WWTC line imo. New I believe this listed for around $20G’s. I picked mine up from a reputable dealer on Chrono24 from HK for just under $8k new. Good deal? I thought so at the time. GP makes some nice pieces...but as you communicated that is one for the list and continue to struggle.
The deal is good... Not easy to resell but you shouldn't loose too much... I love the WWRC
Baume & Mercier makes some really nice quality pieces and there inhouse movements are really good. I have a few pieces in my collection from B&M and they are well bullt and reliable unlike some other mid to luxury brands I have owned.
All watches lose value though.
It's easy to find that the successful watch brands in the world are normally the successful brands BOTH in USA and China, who has a large number of the middle-class consumer group.
Hi Federico, great post as always. I know that you said Grand Seiko it's an excellent brand but not for you, but comparing GS between this brands, in general vs. Breitling, which would you buy it? I'm between a Superocean Heritage II 42mm or a GS Spring Drive. Cheers
Great video! Very informative. Thanks!
Great idea for a series. Thanks very much,
Ulysse Nardin what's impressive it keeps great time, it has the most patents of any watch, its one of the oldest watch companies
TJ Maxx??!! That's some irreparable damage to the Breitling brand IMHO
Kurt Nunn I want to know which one! I call heresy!
Well it’s not tjmax, but I saw one at costco yesterday.
Hey Fed! Thanks for the video! Awesome content! I was wondering if you ever thought of revisiting the discussion about independent watchmakers like F. P. Journe? Maybe a list of the top independents? Also I was wondering if you ever considered talking about how to know if a used or vintage watch is worth the asking price? Some of these watches have some crazy ranges like the Red Submariner or used Patrimony watches.
Independents I will def revisit soon
Federico Talks Watches thanks Fed!
el primero tri color holds value pretty well. 38mm slightly better than 42mm
New to the channel but enjoy it along with the info.
Great vid Fed. Do you think Omega are in danger of going the same way as Breitling, IWC and Zenith and taking a turn for the worse? Their prices don't make sense in a lot of their ranges and every year they release a shit load of new models.
my grandmother had a zenith console (rib shot) lol
Really enjoyed that Fed, I think this should be a series.
I concur, though I’ve seen some entry level IWC maintain value fairly well in the past few years.
Agreed
Maybe there is hope for me to get an IWC Aquatimer.
Hublot ...should be on the list
Why not buy them with big disc., where price mathes their value.
No hublot ?
Would love a monthly series on this topic
