I've just arrived from Ireland with a broken finger in my left hand. Once it' s healed, the first song I'll try to play is this one. I loved to learn about Irish history and Irish culture. Greetings from Argentina!
The great thing about Irish Folk music is that there are so many regional variations to every song with so many musical instrument combinations you can convincingly play with almost any instrument at almost any tempo in almost any key and as long as you're close it'll sound right and be your own variation. I grew up on this stuff and what instruments went into a song and how it was played and sung depended entirely on who showed up to any given family gathering and whether we were inside or outside. You don't want to play bagpipes in the livingroom for instance. That shit will give you hearing damage quicker than standing front of the amp stack at the edge of the mosh pit.
Tried playing on 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th and none seemed quite right. Thanks to your comment I tried on 3rd and it’s perfect hahaha. Of course it’s the only fret I didn’t think to try…
This helped me so much! Your videos are perfect for people who are teaching themselves music, you explain things straightforward without complicated jargon and it's incredibly valuable. Thank you so much for making these.
A suggestion would be to play through the song at full speed first, then go into the breakdown. This way as we pick up the song we can come back and play along full speed.
Great video! I'm just about to start learning to play the guitar after spending a couple years just singing along at the campfire, and this song is one of our all-time favorites, so obviously it's one of those I want to learn... :D
Thanks for the useful tutorial man. I'm looking for all those old Irish rebel songs and this one was very useful indeed. Any idea on what is a good way to play the Sam Song (Up The RA) on guitar?
Jesse Ferguson, where do I know that name from? I'm a mandolin player in Portland, Maine. I use a lot of guitar tutorials to learn songs that I can transfer. Thanks for this. The walkdown on the high E works as well. If you know how a mandolin is tuned you will understand.
How are you able to sing over the actual song? I've always found it really really hard to sing over what I'm actually playing on my guitar. If you have any tips that would be greatly appreciated, Greetings from Ireland
Hi Caomhan, I have the same issue when I learn a new song with a tricky strum or picking pattern. My only advice would be to practice the strumming multiple times, maybe along with a video like mine. When it becomes second nature and your mind starts to wander, then try the singing.
Chords and lyrics are in the video description for all of my videos. Thanks for stopping by!
It is my dream to one day preform this song at the royal Albert hall.

If you want to play it to the key the 'Wolfe Tones' play it too you'll have to put the capo to the 3rd fret :) TAL

When you slow down the pace and start humming, is that from an actual song or “just humming”?
Hi Soren, can you give me the time in the video you're referring to?
Hi Jesse. between 5:10 and 5:20.
Hi Soren, that's not a specific song. I was just improvising.
Hi Jesse, Ok thanks for the fast reply and thank you for the tutorials. Inspiration for a beginner 👍🏻
