Knitting supplies get expensive. This video is helpful. Once you know you will keep knitting, it may worth it to get a set of circular needles in a set with the various lengths of cables. Some stores offer 30 - 60% off coupons and that is a good way to do that. As I've gone along, I've found I like different needles (bamboo or metal) for different yarns and projects. So, it was worth it for me to try some different ones. My other advice is to focus on purchasing supplies for the yarn weight you use the most. I also keep a list of supplies I already have. Take a photo of that list and have it on your mobile phone with you. I have purchased duplicates in the past when I wasn't sure if I had something already.
Gathering what you need for knitting can be pricey. On Amazon I found a tool kit called Merrywindix Essentials tool kit. In a small clear plastic box, you can get, sans knitting needles, every thing you might need for not only knitting, but sewing and crochet too. For $7.98 you get the following: cloth tape measure, 2 pair protectors, one large, one medium; 1 snipper/scissor pair; 1 tweezers; 3 cable needles, sizes 3, 6, & 9; 2 stitch holders, 4.75" & 2 .75" ; 2 tapestry needles, 1 plastic & 1 smaller metal; 1 stitch ripper; 1 thimble, 15 circle markers, 5 small, 5 medium, & 5 large; 15 plastic safety pin stich markers; 15 metal safety pin stitch markers. It's really nice. Of course, there are others that basically have the same items ranging from about $3.00 to $19.99.
thanks so much for this! I learned how to crochet from you and decided a few weeks ago to try knitting, but couldn't find any tutorials that I loved as much as the ones you did. I almost gave up before I saw this and knew I had to keep trying.
Most sets of double pointed needles come with 5 and 6 needles, I don't think they come in 4 needle sets. Using dps can be challenging. I started out using them for my in the round knitting projects, but I have switched from them to Magic Circle, which uses circular needles. Basically you divide your work in half keeping half on one end and one half on the other end. You can use 1 or 2 circular needles (I generally use one). When I make socks, I use this method along with Judy's Magic Cast On to make 2-at-a-time, Toe up socks with no seams. It is awesome, no single sock syndrome. =) You can find examples of these methods here on RUclips. Also, just a note on needle tips. There are some circular needles which are very sharp you can use for lace knitting. Ok, I'll stop now. =)
You said you stored your knitting needles wrong and the wood warped. What is the right way to store them? I'm a crocheter attempting to learn to knit, so please excuse my ignorance.

Thank you for teach/learning along with us. You're NOT stupid! We learn all of our lives or life gets boring!

Double pointed needles are for knitting in the round, like socks and hats. You can also use the circulars.
