great video! i really do wonder how the future of ozeki will look like, especially with takerufuji and onosato who seem to just keep improving. hope to see a new yokozuna this year!
DAIEISHO-SAMA!!! I know he is all gas no breaks, but his basho win was the first tournament I watched from start to finish as a fan :) He always brings a fire and when he can put together a run without getting over his skis, he can easily get 10+
great video, mitakeumi's injury was mainly to his hip/glute area, that was where the tape was and on the last few days there was a huge bruise there. Not ruling out a back injury, and the shoulder could definitely still be bothering him and the fall could've aggravated the shoulder as whenever his opponent got an arm under that shoulder, he would walk himself out backwards. Poor guy. Kotoshoho looks on track to get another Juryo Yusho by the end of the year, I think we'll see 9-12 losses on his end, he has a tendency to free fall after a bad losing record.
I really wonder if we will see any of the "old" Hakuoho unless/until Miyagino oyakata is allowed to reform his stable and Hakuoho can report directly to the oyakata he obviously reveres (have you seen the man's imitations of Hakuho?). I think the stable instability has really had negative effects of this young man.
Given that Miyagino is there with him, I can't imagine he's so broken up about the stable itself not being there that it's suppressing his best performances. Give that shoulder of his another 6-8 months and see where he is then.
I got to disagree with the Shodai placement, I think it would be very Shodai of Shodai to go 15-0 and ruin any potential Yokozuna promotions. Just to go 0-15 the very next tournament.
Yup- the quintessential he may show up to work or not! Depends how he feels when he rolls off his futon in the morning?! Or maybe he needs a new Rolex or designer bag?! Lol! 😅😃
superb ranking chart, agree with almost every pick. good reasons for putting them where they are in your list. what do you think about Shishi? his sumo is starting to get character imo, not just standing still and waiting, actually trying his own yotsu sumo.
I'm waiting to see if he improves enough to stick in makuuchi or if he turns into a taller Bushozan-style yo-yo. His sumo is nowhere near good enough for the top division yet.
Looked forward to this. 1. I got both the English/American football comparisons 😝😝 2. Did I miss Ryuden? Was hoping for some sassy talk about him. (Yes I know, he's in Juryo now)
Only top division in the tier lists. Mostly that's due to audience interest, but also, juryo's incredibly hard to predict. Will Knucklehead A or B decide this is the basho where he wants to actually try?
Entertaining vid, I'm gunning for nephew but we'll see how everything pans out. Not a huge fan of the comparisons with the footballs, don't really follow either sport so went right over my head. But hey, your vid so do what's comfortable
Yeah, I knew they wouldn't connect with everyone. But there's always new people coming in, and comparisons to sports (or anything, I suppose) they're more familiar with can help them understand what's going on a little better.
@sumospiffysbarandgrill yeah understandable man. Gotta see what's your demographic and work with that. I'm from Australia and majority of sports references here are cricket and AFL (with a hint of NRL), then there's me who follows sumo and NHL 😅 a bit of a niche to say the least. Appreciate the reply!
I don't envy Grandson and Nephew... too many people around to sbotage them! 🤣LFG Takerufuji, surely you can pick up all of Maegashira wins this time, do you? For once in a while, the competition feels STACKED.
No, not really. This is the effect of having a grad school friend keep running a fantasy league every year. I pay very little attention to any of the major sports, but I end up knowing more about football in an effort to be at least marginally competitive in fantasy.
It's based on their current ranks. They're good wrestlers, but I expect them to get mostly flattened out by the top guys. I may have underranked Tobi a bit because I forgot he doesn't have to fight Daieisho. I'd still be surprised if he finishes with a winning record, though.
That's a stereotype of football players and kinda racial too. Also, you're aware of all the violence, gambling and match fixing scandals in sumo, right? Not all of these guys are angels either.
There is He Who Must Not Be Named, but also a handful of streamers on Twitch. You can find some just by searching "sumo" there. Apparently NHK has a subscription service you can use to watch sumo (and a lot of other Japanese TV), but it's $25 a month and I'm not sure they have more than the top division available.
@@sumospiffysbarandgrill I was watching Him who shall not be named, but it looks like he's being pushed off the internet and now I'm scrambling. Thanks for the insight!
Looking forward to seeing aonishiki in juryo .
Yes!!! Agree.
Can wait to see him in makuuchi, and live in London!
Great way to start monday morning. Thanks for cranking these out. Fingers crossed for the white rooe hopeful conparison. 🎉🎉

omgomgomg, good shjt thank you Spiffy!
Wonderful video!
Hey Spiffy, just wanted to ask, how do you plan on watching the upcoming basho? If you are allowed to share of course.
There's always someone streaming somewhere, either on Twitch or YT. I just have to track them down.

I remember Hideo Nomo. I'm also old.
Dodgers?

As a big Tottenham Hotspur guy...I would not, in fact, expect them to tear up the 2nd division, lol

Let’s go Rooooooooogaaaaaaaa
Rooting for one of the Y hopefuls to seal the deal, but also curious how our current Y will do.
Teru rarely sounds as confident in his body as he does this time, so either he's psyching himself up or he's ready to completely stomp.
Stomp! Stomp! I can't believe Hokutofuji is so low down the banzuke! 😢
I know! They disrespected the captain!

It seems to me that even if Nishikifuji gets minus 15 points, he will still remain in 17th place 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yeah- he's got someone ( somebody's) looking our for him ( and his stable??!) 🙄😑😶

Can you suggest a good fantasy league to join?
For sumo? I don't really do much in the way of leagues, just the games that everyone can play. There's a link to a bunch of them on our website.
@@sumospiffysbarandgrill cue me discovering your website
@@sumospiffysbarandgrill LOL nice website! didn't know you had one, yup that has all the info I need

Chelsea catching strays, damn
I liked watching Hideo Nomo Pitch. Go Expos!!
I didn't know that Shonannoumi has Thyroid issues. Dang.
Takanosho and Tobizaru D wtf?

I rate Shonanoumi a D tier
Nishkifuji sucks. He should be f tier
thanks for the video. too many football references tho. i (and i assume many others) watch sumo because the athletes generally are not 85iq criminals

If you want more viewers maybe learn how to pronounce the various Japanese words and names correctly. Very sad. Just my two cents.
Great stuff!
