What a basho and what a year it’s going to be. So many storylines. My dream scenario is a Terunofuji zensho yusho and Kotozakura 14-1 jun yusho. Teru proudly retires passing the rope to Koto. BUT with the amount of talent and competition, I doubt it will happen. May the best man win! 🥰
5:24 I think the reason he’s able to go 14-1 or 15-0 when he DOES wrestle is that, as Yokozuna, he can take 2-3 tournaments off to recover/rehab without demotion. So he only wrestles when he’s feeling close to 100%. That same luxury isn’t extended to anyone else, even the Ozeki. They have to wrestle, or they’re demoted.
100%. But it's not Terunofuji's fault that that he hasn't been given any sort of pressure by the sumo bosses to take fewer tournaments off. If he was threatened to either compete at 50% or retire, maybe we'd see him more often - or never again.
@ of course. Tbh, their schedule is completely insane and they should all get more rest/rehab, but the system is set up to favour Yokozuna wins. Almost like getting tenure as a professor - if you can make it to Yokozuna, you’re set for life.
@@gavinmiles4259 of course! But the video said that Teru’s records show just ‘how much of a gap’ (i.e. skill gap) there is ‘at the top’, and that doesn’t tell the full story. Don’t get me wrong - Teru IS more experienced and powerful, but his records are ALSO because he has the luxury of waiting until he feels able to compete at his best. If he had to compete every basho his records would be nowhere near as impressive.
@TerryDBlack ah, well you do get busted up with different injuries as time goes on. But on the other hand I think teru would hold his own. He destroyed guys when he's healthy. The diabetes takes it's toll but for the most part it's been sheer domination.
kirishima said yesterday he's happy to be stress free and out of the spotlight and is focused a return to Ozeki. That may be his ceiling going forward. his wrist injury is still hurting him when pushing but I hope he does well this month!
I'm still routing for my favourite Wakamotoharu to finally throw his surprise win! In all seriousness I think Onosato will score highly in this one and he's still my favourite for Yokozuna this year. btw...I can't see where to message you for KC.
I need Onosato to win in January + Hosh to win in March, then it sets up a battle between the 3 in May to get that Yokozuna promotion, unless it has to be 2 yusho wins in a row then what i've just typed is nonsense 😂
Haha so it usually needs to be two yusho in a row, but on occasion they've promoted Ozeki who had 26 wins over two tournaments and 1 yusho (sometimes even none). That's why Hoshoryu is on a rope run now despite not winning in November!
Yokozuna Hoshoryu 🎉
Praying for kotozakura🤞🏻
Oh, look! Another Sumo Podcast in english! LFG!!!!

Totally agree, so many great storylines!!
Hey thanks for the show. Been watching Sumo for a year or two now. Lots to learn
Thanks for watching Dave! We have lots to learn too, just getting started🙏

Those are the rules!

A WMH win would be wild!! And sorry for the delay, you can send your Kachi Clash name to newtosumopodcast@gmail.com!
I don't think we should count Onosato out. I think his nerves got to him. He has won 2 basho. I think he will give the other 2 a run for Yokozuna!
Would love to see it!

And we'd also love to see Onosato in the mix! He just feels like he's inevitably a future Yokozuna...
How do I send you a message with my user name?
Sorry for the confusion, meant to say you could comment it right here on the video. Excited to compete with you this basho!
