      They don't need to see at all. They know their surroundings by taste / smell.

      Yes, it was heartbreaking for me too. They are so hard to find these days, IDK why... Used to be $5 at so many stores 10 years ago. Nowadays, big specimen and big prices like $150-$200 for 10"-14". ... The corner tank had no work done since the last and only video. Need to open for business first and then start saving the $$$ for the $7K-14K front window.

    • @Fish-Story
      @Fish-Story  2 года назад

      Thank you. Unfortunately not everyone. The wyckii passed. Been losing many fish like this over the years. My only two guesses are [1] the sump is too dirty and hence the count of normally manageable bacteria in the water column is too high for the fish immune systems to handle (solution: I need to clean the 15,000 gal sump filter more often than once a year) or [2] some pathogen is ever-present in this system of tanks and the filter and the pathogen sooner or later sickens and kills residents (one potential solution is installing a UV sanitizer; another is quarantining and treating the incoming rescue fish more thoroughly; third is wiping out the system clean and starting over).

    I remember seeing that Wyckii in it's own tank, I would've never imagined that it would fit in a community tank lol. Still surprised to see it swimming along in there after so much time. I did like it in it's own tank since it made it appear more special, but I'm sure it's more content in the bigger tank with tankmates/food haha.

    • @Fish-Story

      Thank you. Yes, the 240 was too small for it. It needed at least 500 or better 1000 gal. So yes, our visitors and I were able to play with it in the 240 gal and we missed it a lot. But it was much happier in the 4500 gal and relaxed losing perhaps 95% of its bad attitude toward tank mates... But sadly it passed.

      From 1sthand experience, I can only speak for Peru and Suriname piraiba. Our Suriname so far outgrew the Peru duo by 2x and the disparity seems to grow with years.

    Hey brother, that sucks with the second piariba getting bullied like that. Keeping multiple same specie cats together especially piariba and their like is always a risk. U have many tigs together so they don't single one another out. I would consider getting a small pop up pool for him or putting him into the big acrylic tank but that is risky for the current residents in there. Big fish equals big problems. I see ur thought process on the fish loss u have been having and cleaning out the big sump would be a good start. Even siphoning out as much detris as possible in the settling chamber is a good start and hopefully u get things under control. In mine I run a constant drip system and a 7' uv sterilizer as well. I also change the mechanical filtration often. I try my best to remove as much organics from the water as possible!

    • @Fish-Story
      @Fish-Story  2 года назад +1

      Thank you Phil. I agree. It sounds like you are running your tank exceedingly well. Much appreciate the tips and knowing your experience.

    • @Fish-Story
      @Fish-Story  2 года назад

      Yes, vacuuming the 15K sump is the asap on the list. I cut my arm bad, so couldn't get in the filth for a month already but as soon as the skin completely closes up, I plan to do it. The whole sump is the settling chamber; no dedicated mechanical filtration. You are right about removing detritus - the more and the faster, the better.

      I agree with you (see our piraiba thread and our Dec 28 2021 post related to this video, if interested, containing a link to another MFK thread discussing this very issue). But I also can't yet explain the huge size/growth rate disparity between Suriname fila and Peru fila.

    Hey Vic, so the big big Pariba in the other tank is much bigger then the older one in the 4500 the two are?
    And would it be pretty much a death sentence to put one in the other tank?

    • @Fish-Story
      @Fish-Story  2 года назад

      Yes, and yes. The 7yo Suriname is 5ft. The two Peruvians are 2.5+ft. Either one of the Peruvians would be swiftly killed in the other 4500 gal by the jumbos.

    First at all with a little late merry christmas :) . Good tips, thanks, just a quick question, why are the few cyprinids that are left in this aquarium not in the pond with the Kois? I just recovered 3 Mylopharyngodon piceus these are really interesting fish but probably prohibited in the USA :(

    • @Fish-Story
      @Fish-Story  2 года назад +1

      Thank you for this and glad to hear. Merry Christmas and happy New Year to you and yours! [1] The cyprinids had all been in the 25K, until some of them started to attack koi while others started to bother beluga sturgeon, yet some were too small and could be too easily eaten by the wels catfish, so out they went back into the 4500 gal - certain mahseer and the lemon fin tinfoil barb, others into 240 gal and 1800 gal - the black shark and the small scale mud carp. All others that are more peaceful and bigger are still in the 25K. [2] Nice! Yeah, black carp / black Amur is a very interesting fish to me. I've never seen it live and yes, they are prohibited in the USA along with the grass carp / white Amur, big head carp, and silver carp.

      It might help or might not, as these fish are not hiders but open water fish. I can't add furniture to some tanks, this is one of them. ... Mr Wels lived in a 240 gal and now lives in the 25K. We have posted videos on it.
