  • After a long drive to Rio de Janeiro, a plane change in São Paulo, and a somewhat dodgy car rental experience, we made it Asunción - the “Mother of Cities” - in Paraguay. Visiting one of the oldest cities in South America planted visions of cool architecture, sites with deep historical significance, and authentically rich cuisine into our naive little heads. The trip was, in a word, strange. We were pleasantly surprised by the cafe where cats roamed freely and the Presidential Palace is a gorgeous building. Our hunt for popular tea, tereré, led us to colorful murals in Los San Jeronimo. You’ll have to tune into this episode to see the strangeness we were not prepared for in the capital city of Paraguay.

When I was watching the video I was thinking "it must be a Sunday" because everything was closed, but at the end you mentioned it was a holiday. Tereré is an infusion, like an iced tea. It's good when the weather is really hot outside and it can get very hot in Paraguay, easily over 100 degrees in summer every day.

We have to do better about checking holiday schedules when we travel because it was EMPTY! It certainly was a very hot day and we were excited to finally try terere. I suspect there’s a way to drink it properly that we didn’t know about. It was worth a try. Thank you for the view and your comment.

lol nice! I love the ending. So tired of so many youtubers pretending that they like terere. More authentic.

Too many people drink it for it not to be tasty - it just didn’t work for our palette. Thanks for watching!!

Nobody's out maybe by the hour, at 12:00 people commonly eat and we have also a spanish tradition called "siesta" so many people not all are sleeping, at 12 is the middle of the day so the sun is directly upon us and all gets hoter to 15:00 or 16:30 are the hostest time on the day in Paraguay

Thank you for the cultural insight. It turns out it was a holiday and most people had gone out of town.
The comment Scott made about his skin getting hotter was joke about neither of us being very religious and entering a church.

It seems like you went on a holiday or something, usually everything is open. Anyway that's the old part of the city, most of the people don't live around there anymore

@@mca4844 It was definitely a holiday. We will need to do a better job of checking calendars before we travel!
