I believe it was born in a place where food isn't lacking and easy to acquire with genes that gave it an advantage over its kin and against its potential adversaries- that armor. It must've thought it was special and invincible as it pranced about and did as it pleased with the environment but that snail must've whispered something to it in that last moment that ultimately shattered the starfish's delusion along with its remaining resolve to escape its gruesome inevitable fate.
      *TLDR:*
The starfish was too frkin slow and the unfortunate prey can no longer escape because _killer Triton has already touched that starfish_ with its paralyzing saliva

CoT are all over SE Asia and I've seen beautiful reefs decimated by them. Here in Kota Kinabalu one of the local dive schools regularly clears the reef of them but it's a thankless and difficult task. If you stab them, they release their eggs, so they have to be carefully scooped up. Each day they're removing 50 at a time but they keep coming back. They're evil.

Tristan Snails arent "nearly wiped out". No more ignorant claims to promote an eco cause. There's enough material you can use without resorting to lying.

Because someone had the brilliant idea to start harvesting the Giant Tritons for human consumption (to the point of near-extinction, no less), the ocean conservation community had to resort to building killer robots to hunt the CoT starfish in their place.
    *This isn't a joke.*
The first was called COTSBot, and I'm pretty sure there's videos of it and its successor models in action.
