How killer cone snails kill

  • There’s a saying in the sea, 'If it’s a cone, leave it alone'. Although they look pretty harmless cone nails are pretty deadly. They're a chemical making factory that travels around an a giant sticky foot firing venomous harpoons filled a deadly cocktail that paralyses their prey. This cocktail essentially kill their victims half a dozen different ways. Once the prey has been immobilised it is swallowed whole.
    Different cone snails have different venom depending on their diet i.e. invertebrates cf vertebrates. Understandably humans are only susceptible to the venom from the vertebrates.
    Scientists have found a compound in the venom that is more potent than morphine. Consider this..A single cone shell can contain over 100 conopeptides x multiple this out over 500 cone snails species and that’s 50,000 compounds to investigate for medicine. Imagine the potential……That’s just the nature of things.

      Mckrusty Krustystein my guy... the average speed of almost 90% of the worlds tanks is 25 miles per hour which can easily be outran. Completely flat terrain meaning no obstacles or bumps or anything to turn or of the sort is about 45 & if you’re speaking about the statistics of some being able to go 60-70 mph that is only for less or shorter than 8 seconds. That’s momentary speed as to a healthy adult human can go 28-35 mph consistently even on non-flat terrain. They’re slow asf.

    I'm sure you know what you are doing , but I wouldn't have my exposed flesh any where near one of these creatures . I almost stepped on one of these (expletive) in the gulf of Tonkin and a friend saw it before I did and probably saved my life . Two years prior - A 39 year old fisherman was stung by one of these and died 4 hours later . Great video my friend and keep up the great research . ~> Lefty

    The medication he's talking about is ziconotide (brand name Prialt), a chemical that's equally or even more effective as a painkiller than morphine AND does not carry the same risks of tolerance nor overdose. However, it's only given by intrathecal injection, which is highly invasive and so cannot be administered at home by the patient alone. If someone in the future reformulates this drug so that it can be taken at home, that could significantly help the overreliance on opioids.

    How fast can the snails adapt to the situation and construct their venom?

    • @jamieseymour6983
      @jamieseymour6983 8 лет назад +10

      +Peter Pepper Hi Peter, sorry for the slow reply, I could come up with an excuse like "Ive been away on the moon" but unfortunately I dont have one that good! At any rate the question you asked is a good one and I wish I had an answer to it. The short answer is that they can construct venoms VERY quickly, like seconds. As to adapting to the situation, well thats a bit of research that is presently being conducted, stay tuned!

    • @Scuderia11052011
      @Scuderia11052011 8 лет назад +9

      +Peter Pepper Venom doesn't take seconds to be produced, in fact, it is being produced even when not in use, and the killer snails only need to release it during a predation or defensive event. The active ingredients in the venom are known as conopeptides, which are small proteins synthesized in the long venom duct, and these paralytic components are readily produced by different section of the venom gland. When these creatures wanna hunt for food, predatory-evoked venom from the distal section of venom gland is used. In contrast, when they feel threatened by predators, defence-evoked venom from the proximal region is released.

    Awesome video! Do we know WHY they produce different types of venom? It seems like it would be way more metabolically efficient to produce one type of venom rather than multiple?

      +ChirrupForScience great question! short answer is WE THINK its more expensive in the long run to produce a venom that does everything, but to be brutaly honest we really dont know. a good PHD topic for a biochemistry graduate! Always looking for good post grad students in my lab hint hint!

    • @pramitbanerjee
      @pramitbanerjee 8 лет назад +4

      why is it metabolically efficient to produce one type of venom? This need to be answered from evolutionary perspective, by looking at food tree and seeing who their natural predators and prey are, and how important it is for them to make the right kind of toxin.

      @tonyhere7004 6 лет назад +2

      If I were to guess I'd say it made it harder for a predator or prey to develop an immunity.
      The fact that they're snails also likely had something to do with it, they have no backup survival mechanism if it ever failed.

    When i was on vacation i was walking along the beach at night when i saw this strange cone thing. I went to pick it up and it felt slimy and saw it was still alive. So i left it alone and went back to my hotel. I later realised that this was a cone snail, and that if i had gotten stung, I wouldve died, as the nearest hospital from the resort/island was more than a plane trip away. I got very lucky
