  • Roof inspection of a roof that was recently replaced in the past year or 2. There are good roofing contractors and bad ones out there! There are some contractors that do a good job and care about the quality of install for their customers. There are some that care solely about the money going into their pocket and not one bit about the customer.
Don't get me wrong, a good profit margin is good and is needed to stay in business. When your contractor is telling you you're getting things and paying for items like ice and water and all new flashing, then you don't get it, they're cheating you!

The tiny details are truly what separate roofing companies. Like using aluminum pipe flashings, kick outs on the chimney and even as small as using black caulk for all the nails just makes everything look and perform so much better. Love your videos keep making them!

The challenging issue with finding quality roofers is that even though you get referrals and check out a good reputation, you still don't know which "crew of the day" is going to be sent out to do your job. That is why you should choose a small roofing company with only 1 or 2 install crews. That said, it is still usually a crap shoot because you also don't know how long the guys have been employed with the small company you hired.

I use the same 4 crews, got rid of 2 crews for cutting corners and went back and redid the roof they were on personally. The other roofs they did I went back and offered the customers a longer warranty and inspected the roofs. I found being honest with most customers even if it's bad news helps word of mouth customers come in. But you're 100% right with not knowing which crews you'll get with some companies.

You check the foreman! I am a foreman with a roofing company near me, and I get one of 8 eight crews everyday. My job is to make sure quality control is high, and making sure the job is done right. I have caught the guys taking shortcuts, but then quickly corrected them. And now there's rapport with them and we don't have any issues anymore. It doesn't particularly matter how many crews they have, but the quality of character they have running the jobsite as foreman. My company also requires us to take pictures at every step of the install, so we have company wide accountability with the quality of the roof.

Same here and the photos are very important! Having the photos on file can save you when there's damage that was already existing. I've also had customers question whether we've used certain things like ice and water. The photos are a good way to point out to them especially when it comes to bad wood. Quality control from the guy in charge is big.

I don’t know if you have heard about lifetime tool pipe flashings that’s all I use. They are expensive but well worth it I don’t give customers a choice I just include them on the bid. I carry one around to show them the difference between one regular pipe flashing and a lifetime tool.

Thanx for the standoff link. Will be getting a set of these. I do a lot of side jobs apart from my full timer and use bullhorn standoff, just not enough distance from wall sometimes. These look a little better then the rung type the company I work for uses. They always bend at the tabs meant to keep it on the ladder if you lose any of the 4 pins.

I don’t know if you’ll ever see this but as an adjuster you’d say the job is rather physical? I just have suspicions about a lady on here constantly collecting to attend classes to become further certified in adjusting, but she almost lost her toe a couple months ago after getting gangrene which I told her on her channel was gangrene but she said IT IS NOT GANGRENE, & put off getting it looked like until she ended up in the hospital & they monitored her then put stints in a week later. Is it realistic A. For someone on disability to adjusting? & B. If someone claims 1,000 other professions & has had shoulder surgery, stints put in the lower leg they she almost lost for being so negligent, because of the vessels being almost entirely blocked in the lower leg.. sorry 😂 I just unloaded on you but I’m mostly familiar with the medical field I’d never heard of this before now I’ve watched videos love the videos where they school insurance agents but haven’t been able to talk directly to an adjuster lol.

    • @GoldenMarleyMoo
      @GoldenMarleyMoo 11 месяцев назад

@@autumnrenee077 I'm happy to answer your questions 😊 There is a lot of different dynamics to adjusters first and foremost is carrier and independent, carrier adjusters tends to be the safer option because carriers (StateFarm, allstate, progressive, nationwide, farmers, liberty mutual) all have to follow rules and regulations. That usually means that carrier adjusters aren't allowed to climb above 7/12 pitch roof without a harness and a partner, they're not allowed to take on dangerous situations, they aren't allowed to be on sites that arent cleared etc. Independent adjusters work for themselves or with a company that contracts them (PDA, SCA, public adjusters) the risk is 100% theirs and they don't necessarily regard safety seriously because they aren't binded to an employer to nor do they have the safety of health insurance or workers compensation. They are paid based on commission whereas carrier adjusters are strictly hourly.
Then with carrier adjusters it's split into 3 categories (for field) auto, proximity and catastrophe. The auto is self explained they don't really carry any inherent risk as they just take photos of vehicles and create estimates as long as you can walk around a vehicle you're safe. The most dangerous part about that is some vehicles are in tow lots and you may step on something. Proximity adjusters are local adjusters they live and work in the same place they mainly deal with daily claims like leaking appliances or random bursted pipes a lot of interior things that's not wide spread. Their jobs aren't all that risky either sometimes they may have to climb into an attic or crawlspace but most the time you can tell what's going on without doing either if you know what you're looking for.
Catastrophe adjusters carry the most risk of the carrier adjusters they travel the whole country and mostly deal with hail storms, wind storms and Hurricanes they lift heavy ladders and spend a lot of hours on roofs.
Insanely physical no I wouldn't say so there's inherent risks with climbing roofs and sometimes the ladders can be a pain you probably could injure your back easily and god forbid you fell.
It wouldn't take tip top physical shape to do your job though you need to be able to carry about 100 lbs and walk a lot. If a physical disability was preventing you from doing such then no it probably wouldn't be the job for that kind of person.
I do see older people doing it though, as well as some overweight and such.

  • @travissmith3720

Yeah ... That ladder stabilizer I used it once or twice and what it did was the constant movement of the ladder as you are walking up or down, it's scraping off roofing at that point touching the roof, basically ruining the roofing in that spot. A person should not be destroying the roof when you get up on the roof.
I no longer use that contraption.

One of the biggest issue I come across is roofers not removing the old felt and rolling a second layer of felt and they won't replace any wood. The chimney flashing they should extend the bottom side 4 inches on each side and the step should go down past the bottom piece on top of it. The plastic boots leak way too often but people use them because they are cheap.

Not a professional roofer here. Share the frustration with how to find and trust you have a good roofer. Two observations on this video, which is another great video, by the way: (1) I don't know whether it's in the calling of the roofer to suggest a vent cap of some sort over the vent or whether that falls totally to the plumbers; but without a vent cap of some sort, leaves can get down in the vent or birds can build a nest, and voila, your toilets and drains can drain very slowly or not at all without free flowing air. (2) The electrical mast, I think, should be entirely left to qualified electricians. It could be a violation of code for a roofer to try and stabilize a mast that wobbly. There needs to be structural work done inside the attic and possible further down the walls below to secure that mast, especially as you point out with that long span of wire from the pole, and that branch hanging on the line definitely needs to be addressed.

Many, many people say they can shingle a roof, and normally they can. They can run rows spaced properly and use proper nail placement, but that’s not a whole roof and that’s not where a roof usually leaks. Protrusions and edges are usually where they fail.

like the other guy said, all depends on the crew. i just had an insurance job replacement. insurance covered what i had but the roofers were fine with me paying for upgrades. for a couple thousand it went from a 30yr malarkey highlander to their 50yr legacy and from normal pipe vents to lead. it was worth it. legacy is a hell of a lot nicer, heavier than the failed landmarks i had. anyway. crew comes. 2 guys very skilled, 2 not. i'm watching things,. have to call out the newbies on everything from their lines to the nails they were using. one guy didn't know the difference between a 16d and an 8d. also nearly used 8d's on my cap shingles. caught a few pieces of cdx not nailed properly. they would pop when walking on them. missed one over an eve and had to bracket it after the job. some bent 3/4" nails on the eve row i had to pull, flash, caulk and replace after the fact. every single issue was in the area the new guys were working and i didn't catch all the mistakes until they were done. yes i worked construction when i was younger. seems hard to find people wanting to go into the trades these days and roofing is truly a hellish hard job. on the bright side, their nail pattern was spot on. didn't find any shingles with shiners or nails on or even near gap lines after checking many the day after before the tar set. side note on your video, at the 11min mark. super cheese. they never caulked the nails and used those POS electro galv nails. those things rust out and leak especially when exposed like that. box of hot galv is $100 per 7200 and electro $50, is it REALLY worth that 50 bucks? homeowner sure won't think so 10 years later. 12 min part equally cheese with that power line. i would have raged at the company over that. one windstorm away from no power and a hole in the roof

    • @richardprice5978

actually that chimney is to short vs ridge line ( my 🇺🇸 county that would flunk i know because mine/1960's house doesn't pass and i either need more bricks+mason or a pipe/flue extension up 10 ish feet = from the ground 40ft ish ) ( 4-foot above the roofing deck and ridge aka the tallest part of the house in that area as to pull hot embers off of the tar/roof/plastic/leaf's-ect in a breeze and not let it dig in and smouldering to ignition ) to get a good draft and is a fire hazard more so if it's used for wood burning vs just a decretive part/peace and or flue for a gas/electric furnace
now that arial look's way to long and heavy ect ( plus too many trees in the way ect. aand probably to close to the ground ) and my local authority's/power company wouldn't let that happen without going under ground ( and in my resent case my 100A to 400A upgrade i was forced into under ground poll-drop as anything more than 120A service is to heavyweight for the 80FT ish span unsupported and there wasn't enough room for a extra poll ect to fix that problem ) or having a delivery power poll in the middle of the yard, better to fixing to under ground and upgrade the service 200A+ well you're at it as im betting it's a 100A or less and pre-1980's aka good chances it's a challenger=fire box/aluminium wiring house
hopefully this helps someone else out with the same problems as me
