This umpire is horrendous. Not only could she not figure out the obvious in regards to who should get this point but on her watch hawk eye overruled 6 calls in one set. What a pathetic joke she is.
To be completely fair, this is the only call that she herself (the chair) called out. The other calls were just challenges from Cirstea. Typically umpires will only make calls or overrules when they are completely sure; in this case, she shouldn't have. Lol.
+dedfed321 the tournament supervisor had to walk onto the court and correct her siding with the player overturning the umps original call, that rarely happens. Also she had plenty of opportunities to overrule horrendous line calls but lousy linesmen and didn't. There is a reason why you don't see her sitting in the chair in WTA/ATP tournaments anymore.
This wasnt the only incident on that match. Type on youtube: Cirstea 6 challenges in one set. That match was dirty. They were keep calling "out" every single shot and it were all in. And poor sportmanship from Cibulkova. She should have given the point.
cibulkova told her to challenge how is that bad sportsmanship ...... she cannot do anything about it .... when she pointed her finger up she told her to challenge
Yes. In this same set Cirstea made 5 additional successful appeals, some of which were not particularly close. See here: ruclips.net/video/hdqDXO5VH28/видео.html You could have replaced the umpire with a potted plant and no one could have told any difference.
The umpire was wrong ... twice: 1. Cibulkova stopped the point before the umpire wrongly called out (as Cristea tried to explain). So it is Cristea's point! 2. Even if Cibulkova had not stopped the point, the umpire wrongly called out waaaay after Cibulkova hit the ball, which then itself went out. So it is Cristea's point again! What a dense umpire!
the problems with umpires/referee is that they never change their judgement. like they thought they would lose authority or be embarrassed if they correct themselves. i feel helpless when after a ruling and many players complain but never did any got a successful appeal. can't be that the umpire is always right is it, they are all human too.
+Ken Yap I thought that as an umpire you must not change your decision, what would happen if every protest from a player would have the chance to alter the decision. Think about football... it would be a nightmare. Also, she agreed to have somebody else do the ruling on this, which is the best she could do for the player.
any sport actually. Take snooker, most gentleman sport where players come forward with their fouls and grant their opponent fairness whenever they can. Even there, after the umpire decided something, it stands and will last. discussions allowed but futile.
good job, Sorana!!! and you're so beautiful!!!! and why Cibulkova didn't say that she called out (before judge did) and stopped playing!!! it is tennis, it's king sport, every player must be honest
The issue is not that Cibulkova "stopped the point", but that she hit the ball before the umpire called it out. As her own shot landed out, she lost the point, as her shot was unaffected by the umpire's late call.
Nice clip. Cirstea has great eye. So does Alex Dolgopolov, though it hasn't really helped make him a champion. He is almost never wrong when he challenges.
NO,she is NOT! ''Why's everyone calling Sarana a gypsy??'' Because the internet is the only place where you can say nasty things about somebody without getting punched in the face!
Cibulkova is a good competitor but very poor sportsmanship here no question..any little kids know to give up the point when this sequence of events happened.
Now imagine there is no hawk-eye. Now realise there was no hawk-eye in tennis for like 50 yrs before they introduced it. Now realise how DIRTY AND CORRUPTED tennis was in last 50 yrs, if even with hawk eye they are trying to fix. I can believe in like 2, lets say 3 mistakes. But not 6 (SIX), and not that big ones.
Yesss. Thats also a problem. Hawkeye has actually big margin for error. I heard its like 3 cm. And on highest level 3 cm is actually way too much. Players often argue. Recently I saw Kohli in Vienna vs Tsonga. The ball looked completely wide, but... hawk eye showed it was in.And it was set point for Kohli... Strange.
Come on. There is also this little thing called statistics. Every once in a while a fluke happens. 6 successful challenges in 1 set for example. Over the thousands of matches every year, it's bound to happen one time.
Problems like these can be avoided, if hawk eye is used with every single stroke and so umpire can stop the point in real time by reviewing the hawk eye. They are already using hawk eye, may as well use it the entire time, mistake would be virtually be impossible to happen. One dedicated umpire can watch the hawk eye during the match. No argument, no need for 3 challenges per set. Players can then concentrate on playing and not bias umpiring.
the officials and umpire at this tournament are very poor... 😤😠😠. she got 6/6 challenges in one set correctly, even though her shots were in, the umpire and officials kept saying they were out.
Some of the comments are disgusting. Just because Sorana is Romanian doesn't mean she is a gypsy. Its ridiculous how Romanians are being stereotyped in such a manner. Furthermore even if someone was a gypsy, why all the hate and prejudice, all human beings are equal and deserve respect.
in this match there were 6 bad calls against Cirstea overruled by hawkeye and 3 times Cirstea would have won the points if the bad calls had not been made; once, Cibulkova was already beaten, the other 2 times, including here, Cibulkova hit the ball before the out calls- each time Cirstea should have been awarded the points without having to argue her case
first time ever i see a supervisor correct an umpire. 99.9% of the time they dont give a flying fuck about players and their arguments. Probably cause Cirstea is so attractive that he had to do something.
The hawk eye rules are clear and there is no predicament.. the only problem lies that the umpire has to judge the timing of the call and the players reaction to see which one came first.. its the tricky part and error prone.. the umpire made an error here because the outcall had no effect on cibulkova shot as she had already gone through the shot and the call came later
Funny to see how what was seemingly an innocuous match, sullied behind-the-scene or not, to transpire into a form of entertainment that made everyone in unison, felt genuine indignation for the one victimized. Helps that she's a beauty.
For a point like this, if you the player stop play before a lines person or chair umpire call it, you basically forfeit the right to a replay, especially when you get it completely wrong.
This same thing happened in Nadal x Berdych in London 2010, Nadal did the same thing as Cibulkova and the umpire also called out after Nadal raised his arm, Berdych challenged and won, and the umpire gave the point the point to Berdych, and everyone said the umpire was wrong, that the point should have been replayed, etc...so people, make up your minds: Nadal getting angry With Umpire vs Berdych london 2010 HD
Great find. I hope the wta/atp make a determination on what the correct call should be. I can see good arguments on both sides. I guess the lesson for players is do not challenge calls right away, but also don't wait too long!
The umpire overruled the line judge, needlessly and incorrectly. She sat silently for 5 other challenges against Cirstea that set. Cirstea made her point clearly and succinctly, and was right - and yet the umpire wouldn't agree until forced to. Ego and arrogance got in the way. A sports official's #1 goal needs to be to get the call right without bias, favour, or personal interest. In that simple, clear job, this official is horrible.
There was nothing hidden by Cibulkova. Everyone including the umpire knew that Cibulkova called out before the umpire. The umpire just didn't knew what decision to make and had to ask for help. The umpire was incompetent.

The umpire took the responsability for the call, she didn't even let Cibulkova challenge!

This was by far, the most corrupt tennis match I've ever seen. If I was her I would have petitioned to never have that crew officiate my matches ever again.
For me, it’s a toss-up between this one and the Serena v Capriati match. This one had more bad calls, but the Serena match had more important and obvious bad calls (one winner down the line by Serena was ruled out by the ump when it was so in that the ball wasn’t even touching the line). And that match was before challenges and Hawk-Eye, so no recourse. Both of these matches make my blood boil just watching them, though.
You are all wrong hahaha. It doesnt matter if cibulkova says out before. Ir umpire calls Out, then the cibulkova challenge doesnt matter anymore. Check rafa vs berdych and you will see the same situation
1. Umpire is stupid and doesn't know the damn rules. 2. Cibulkova's behavior is completely unsportsmanlike, not once but twice. First because she's calling out herself and second because she won't admit she did it. Very glad she lost that match.
Cirstea is right. Cibulkova stopped play during the point and then it was proven that it was in, so Cibulkova should lose the point
This is the only comment needed. Spot on.
Not only that, the 2 calls clearly came after she hit the ball. Fuck that fatty
Who you calling fatty, you fucking loser? She will run circles around you.
Agreed
Who you calling loser, you fucking fatty? He will win circles around you.
At least Cirstea won the match 6-7, 6-2, 6-0
Good for her. I don’t know if I would’ve been able to mentally hold it together after losing that first set with so many dirty calls
This umpire is horrendous. Not only could she not figure out the obvious in regards to who should get this point but on her watch hawk eye overruled 6 calls in one set. What a pathetic joke she is.
Pete Smalls those would be the linesmen/women faults

Chair umpires should only rely on Hawk-eye when they are uncertain, they are using it as a scape goat and not doing their actual job!
dedfed321 she's in the chair, she's responsible. Not a wonder why you don't see her in the chair anymore.
This wasnt the only incident on that match. Type on youtube: Cirstea 6 challenges in one set. That match was dirty. They were keep calling "out" every single shot and it were all in.
And poor sportmanship from Cibulkova. She should have given the point.
Yup; who are these refs and what are their qualifications???
Fuck Cibulkova, she's a fat ugly bitch. Cirstea is hot.
they actually lost, because cirstea won in the end
I'm gonna pull the racism card
cibulkova told her to challenge how is that bad sportsmanship ...... she cannot do anything about it .... when she pointed her finger up she told her to challenge
incompetent umpire.
nope. The umpire corrected herself and took the right decision. That´s rare.
Quite. And this was not her first mistake of the match. The linesmen and women were also sodding pathetic. Cheers!
@@Mindless-1337 Yeah, but only after the tournament referee came and got it through her thick head what the rule was.

this was a very good match--Cirstea won impressively after this incident
Dominika isn't fair-play here. She could have said to the umpire that Sorana was right because even her (Domi) knew that Sorana was right.
Why hire umpires like this? It would be totally avoidable. I'm sure there are plenty of qualified people who understand tennis.
Probably avoiding discrimination against blind.
