I think this could mean the end of a LOT of multiplayer games. Imagine you are in a server queue in a game like the Isle or something just WAITING to play then you find out like 30 of those players aren't even real people enjoying the game it's just AI farming or growing or something for people.

If you haven't seen the videos where the player links in the NPCs to ChatGPT and then has complex plot discussions with them then I highly recommend them. In one of them the player accuses one of the Jarl's court of being a traitor and it generated its own quest line. Admittedly there wasn't any xp or item rewards and it wasn't recorded in the quest lists themselves, but all the relevant NPCs acted and reacted appropriately.

There’s limitations of current tech being called “AI” (e.g. Neural Networks) where it’s not cost effective / accurate / reliable / timely enough to justify using it, calling out in particular its scalability on less constrained problems. Neural Net AI playing a racing game = easy; NN AI playing a multiplayer FPS with dynamic environments and survival mechanics = hard (without cheating) and requires a lot of power; and alternatively, can script bots for better performance and less taxing on system requirements.
Efficiency will improve with “AI” specific hardware, but the tech is generalised and inherently inefficient for specific problems and applications. Imagine trying to measure the height of a table by taking a photo and comparing it to a database of tables with known heights, instead of just measuring it using a tape measure.
I think there’s good applications for deep learning AI, particularly for language recognition interpretation and generation, but even then I hope that deep learning AI is just a stop-gap that will get us to more effective and efficient tech.

@Bluedrake42 Hear me out, its not unrelated to the video: I think operation harsh doorstep needs to have a core progression system and core gamemodes in order to appeal to more players, like having mods and modded gamemodes that also give you xp would be insane. But just a sandbox? OPHD has potential and i love the idea but it needs a bit of a central idea other than a battlefield like gamemode, which to be honest is nothing special, thats not gonna convince people i guess EVEN if its free. People dont care about prices anymore, they set the same standards for a free game as to any other game since they just want to have a good time, and thats something that has no set pricetag, it can be 0$, 5$ or 100$. Doesnt matter. Yes making a free game is better IF its appeals to enough people and then your dream of unlimited gamemodes and creative developers will become real. But maybe it needs some market for servers so they can buy content, and developers and artists can earn some money which will motivate ALOT more people. Like again im a developer and even if I had time I have no reason as a gamer to build something for OPHD.
Find some creative people, find some AI guys and make a gamemode that people remember. I love grayzone, I hate tarkov, I love pavlov VR for its custom games that are insane. But OPHD doesnt give me anything yet. Like im a developer myself and have writting mods but my motivation to do something for OPHD is pretty low, even so i like bluedrake and i like the project.
I mean, cmon bluedrake you seem to love AI as much as I do, lets make something out of it for OPHD so it can be the success it has earned. But not as a mod, but as core gameplay that needs no downloads, and that has progression to keep the players in the game.

@@Bluedrake42 nice that sounds awesome, keep working on it but it needs something to be different from other games other than being free and having "unlimited" mod potential. And as a developer myself (7 years in companies, partly open source, and like 10 years total) I love that you do this for free! Really its so cool. Like I tried to get some friends to play with me with arma experience and alot of other games and they just said "ahh no doesnt appeal to me".
Thats not my opinion you are doing great work I never want to say anything else! But for normal players outside of your community there is still something missing.
But I'm sure if you keep the progress up and keep adding things some day it will turn out good even for normal players.
E.g. Fortnite was an example project for the unreal engine for a long time and look where its now. But i guess you already know that. Just saying keep going :)

Dudesey is a podcast that is run by an AI, it picks the topics and schedules guests and stuff, it has the two hosts' entire internet history, texts, cloud drives, etc (and it started back in 2022, before LLMs blew up).
I forget the channel where I saw it, but there's a Minecraft mod where you can chat with AI players and they'll build towers and stuff for you.
Chess is a good example of AI cheat detection, they go to great lengths, tracking statistics for every move to try and detect if your skill level is jumping around too much.

Well, this could actually be a good thing, at least for someone like me who doesn't give a flying fuck about loot/skins/achievements/trophies etc etc. Cause now making games with tons of that just won't be reasonable (maybe), and therefore we'll have to go back to good old payed subscriptions for multi-player service games, and then the cheatbots will be less attractive for people to use instead since there's nothing to use them for other than winning, but that's probably mostly a problem in ranked games, and I don't care about those either, so..... Might actually be sweet....

What sense has P2W or even just Online Multiplayer leveling/ranking on "public" (not privatly moderated) servers in those conditions? And what difference do you thing are there that wouldn't make you enjoy offline & online private coop/comp games where "filler AIs" are 99% of the entities on the map, playing at the same level, if not better, of real humans? After thinking about this for years (this isn't new) and talking to fellow devs and comp scientists related to autonomous drones and vehicles, we're still far away from the following scenario, but it will come:
1- single player will become as unpredictable as currently multiplayer fps games (and games in general) . ML based NPCs will be facing players in arenas, attrition, death match scenarios with as much variability as human players
2- the death of multiplayer games is coming. Imagine facing opponents which you think are humans but are instead AI controlled players. We already have huge problems with aim assists, strike packs and Cronus zen and a multitude of cheats, imagine facing an advanced AI foe acting as a human being.

"AI" QA is a terrible idea. Publishers would NEVER pass on savings to the consumer, because they need to consistently raise their profit each quarter to keep shareholders happy. "AI" still lacks human reasoning that is necessary for good QA, so we'd see QA workers without jobs, worse games, and greedier companies. Not to mention QA is the jumping off point for a lot of other jobs in the industry, losing us yet another entry point into game dev.

You might want to watch a show called Pantheon as it tried to look at a near future where AI, UI, and CI and regular old humans intermingle. The short version is that state sponsored hacking programs end up exploiting things like gold farming in WOW to funnel money back to their respective nations, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
If you think a hyper Intelligence impersonating a player is concerning consider for a moment one that is designed to hack, spearfish, mimic voices and video to gain access to secure networks.
In the show the US ends up having to shut down the internet temporarily to combat the cyber threats and when it brings it back online users have to install a US made AI security program to their devices and networks…. Which totally doesn’t spy on people…. Among other things.

Imagine you could like talk to it in a tactical shooter (against cpu obviously) and you could tell it to breach like a certain door after how many ever seconds. Likely not gonna happen with this, but that'd be cool as fuck if you have no friends online or want to try a game but are in more of a 2 man squad mood.

War thunder is an interesting example where this would create tons of issues. any f2p game with progression as their main monetization model. imagine if everyone could just turn on AI and let their pcs run while they get progression they wouldve paid to skip. The customer base with the good PC that can easily run the game and the AI in the beginning would maybe have been the exact same customer that wouldve paid to skip.
This can have huge rammifications to monetization models. Hopefully for the better but you know people probably gonna be for the worse.

This is going to spell a lot of problems for the multiplayer gaming industry. As is, the anti-cheat is barely able to keep on top of conventional scripts and exploits and botting, never mind whatever the hell this is. And on the Quality Control/Assurance front that they claim this technology is for, just because the game is programmatically sound doesn't mean it's fun. Sure, the devs can tell the AI the objective they need to achieve to advance the game and the AI can follow that order through and spill the beans on the errors it encounters along the way, but in the end, it will just spit out that what the Devs wanted to accomplish has been completed. In other words, it's a confirmation bias that what the Devs laid out is completable as the Devs envisioned it; not offering a unique perspective onto the work the Devs have build themselves around, you know, part of the reason why playtests exist?

I don't mind as long as I can chat and play with the AI players. Most likely much more fun than with nowadays toxic gamers.
I keep saying this till the end of the times: Force every multiplayer game to require "game ID" that every human can get from officials like social security card. If you cheat you will get banned for a while from multiplayer games and only can play in the non official servers etc. And repeatedly cheating is same as breaking law and will end up costing alot or even prison time.

One good thing I can see this being for is if it can be used with speech to text/text to speech tech then a single human player could have a squad of bots that respond to voice commands in things like ARMA, Scum etc where stupid idiots like me try to run RP servers for friends and have to voice act all the important parts while still trying to spawn in and maintain scenario related guff. I could just say to Bot3 "you are going to be the unhinged convict that always stops to take the teeth and ears from any bodies found even if the group is under fire, and if questioned will respond in an appropriately aggressive and unnerving manner". Certainly saves me from going AFK constantly and then teleporting around the place saying that so-and-so runs into the bushes before anyone can stop them.

I think when it comes to game development. This might first be used for just case by case testing. Making sure nothing that has previously been made breaks during development.
Will be interesting though how creative these AIs will be able to get for pretty much finding ways to break a game. Because I still believe we has humans might still be more creative when it comes to breaking things.

By this rate T-800s are going to be a thing over the next decade, the only thing that is missing is the hardware (which I'm sure AI will greatly help solve)

I'm all in for actual great AI "bots", since the cheating problem likely won't be solved any time soon... playing online games started feeling useless because of it... but bots in games like COD and BF2042 are so dumb... even the hardest ones are not even a challenge lol. Having great AI bots will make playing games a thing a gain

I think if they would be able to use this for non playable characters, it would be awesome. Playing games in multiplayer is awesome but you get a lot of people who like playing offline and bots are stupid most of the times. Imagine a AI like this in a co op game. You will always have something to play with like Ready or Not for example. It's actually going to feel like you are playing with someone and thus you have the same feeling and same amount of fun. Not including how much more fun it would be in the AI can actually communicate with you in a direct way.

This new development would remove a job from the industry that's a very nice place for people who want to get into the game industry to start as an entry job, and that plus all the other problematic topics do indeed make me upset/worried.
But something I've often fantasized about quite a bit is the ability to have an "Ai friend" who you could play multiplayer games with without the need to train the model for "every game", especially if you could run said Ai locally so as to be able to be used when you don't have access to internet.
The ability to play games like Minecraft, Terraria, or pretty much any game would with an Ai companion be so cool to have as an option for people who are shy or just out right can't play with other people due to internet or other reasons. I'd personally love to start a Minecraft world with an Ai and see how much we could accomplish together

my perspective on AI is kinda mixed, in the sense that i'm actually not against ai, i've been using it on my art workflow and i think that it's amazing what it can do for a solo artist. I think the only problem is when people criticize AI when AI by itself doesn't do anything it wasnt meant to be used for, so i guess that the real issue is how companies are gonna use it. In my case if a solo or indie dev decides to make art by himself because he can't be talented as AAA artist that's awesome! and that actually brings new ideas to the table, now an studio that has people working for them using ai to replace workers that's not cool at all. I think the issue is more political and economical rather than AI itself, AI shouldn't be a bad thing it should be a tool. The problems are created by companies that only care about money. And also i think that all AI should be totally open source and free to everybody since they trained an all of our stuff, which im cool if they make it free for everybody. For example when i share my instagram i don't really care if the AI trains the art in my art as long as the tool is available for everybody!, Besides a AAA studio doesn't really need ai with all the bucks they made through the years they should be able to hold themselves without ai, and it's like you said if they are using AI how is that benefiting the customers? it's really different from an indie studio, as the indie studio doesn't have the money or the resources to hire, Environment artists, character artists, programmers, etc etc . So i good say that AI is super cool for some positions while others should remain out of AI.

About gaming i hope they can integrate it on NPC so to make the experience more realistic. Honestly i cant find the sense of left AI play your games. The games are there to enjoy the history adn have fun not to AI play for you.

man i wish this was already in games, no anti cheat can compete how the cheating industry has become its a multi million dollar industry i believe the future is with ai that plays like real people.
Instead of striving for better graphics we should strive to have better features and detail to games. i no longer play most milsims because its just a static blank world with no lighing.
imagine if we could play squad and demolish buildings and raise entire sectors of a city, droping mortars in a forest and the forest gets vaporized ,with tress falling over and trembling withe the shockwave of explosions. like we would have AI to fill up the battlefield with civilains for patrols or defeding check points or running logistics so most players could focus on attacking.
but we are stuck in the same technological cul de sac.

I think AI is cool, but replacing humans to be play testers for a game made for humans doesn't seem right. You need human input for things like that. AI can help, but it shouldn't replace humans completely in regards to QA.

There won’t be a grind to level up. Just let Ai do it. I wouldn’t do it myself but cheaters will cheat. And at the same time what would be the point of leveling up anymore. It could change the whole industry. I can imagine a new game like xdefiant comes out today and by tomorrow I bet there will be a lot of top tier leveled up.
