  • Part 3: Fantastic Mr Phase.
Haas delay is not the only way to create phase differences between left and right channels. Filters and EQ can be used to create a sense of width or depth, or you can double track the part, or create unison synth layers.
In Part 3, Dan Worrall looks at a few of these techniques, and their implications for the mono downmix, and shows the awesome power of mid / side EQ on stereo sub mixes.
You can find more useful tutorials at www.fabfilter.... . FabFilter plug-ins can be downloaded and purchased via www.fabfilter.com .

The 3 break through moments that made me feel like a pro where saturation/distortion for adding upper harmonic information to elements, LUFS for target mix volume standards and more recently mid/side processing. I've taken some older mixes of mine and remastered them with splitting the track into mid, side, and sub buses. Adding saturation to the sub channel and widening the sides brought out details I didn't know where missing.

Everyone that says that checking in mono is a useful tip honestly requires including discussion on mid-side mixing or not talk about mono at all (or else tell everyone to mix in mono and disregard stereo entirely). Checking something implies needing to do something about it. In the few years I've looked for mixing tutorials, Dan Worrall is the ONLY one that highlights the importance of the difference between stereo and mono. Fantastic video, but shame on the people that just say "checking in mono" is good and never substantiate the reasons.

Holy shit, what an eye opener! Thought I knew what MS-EQ is but I never realized that whatever you do with the EQ´s side bands won´t change anything when listening in mono!!! That changes everything. That means you can basically EQ for stereo AND mono playback systems at the same time to make it sound perfect on both, all using only one EQ-plugin. Never thought about it that way! Everything else in this series is fantastic as well. One of the best tutorials videos ever seen, if not the best, and it´s free, incredible! Thank you!!!

I find The most mono compatible stereo trick is actually to use a haas delayed copy which itself has a 180 panned copy. So when summed the enhancement completely cancels leaving the og mono intact. You can also filter the effect to keep the enhancement area tidy too. Voxengo's free stereo touch does this.

Honest opinion about the series? As a music technologies student - I'm in love. No one bothered to specifically talk about this stuff and I'm practically done with my studies. Everyone just keeps saying "Oh yeah, you should check if it sounds ok in mono", but no one goes into how to fix when its wrong. Barely any students I know have gotten into M/S processing or checking in depth for phase issues. Yes, most do it by earand feel, but the techniques they use are not as refined as this. Don't even get me started about getting your mix to translate well between systems.

I don't know how many parts this has, but there's a way to get only the difference between channels without inverting the polarity of one of them by means of transformers. Then you can amplify only it and mix to your mono mix. It will make it sound more like the stereo. This is because the output of the transformer is equal to the derivative of the input, so you can reject the common without having to invert polarities.
