OmG you are such a great teacher. During the Corona pand. I tried my first steps in water color. It had been such a great help in this mysterious matter. I am still a beginner with my 75 year. But is great fun and I love it. Thank you so much

I agree with your opinion; I definitely like the paint over the pencils; they don't blend the same. Love the beginning of the video. You always keep me smiling. The chicken leg story was funny, and it was nice to hear the story; it was amusing, but I was a little teary-eyed at the same time. It was nice to know a little more about you as a person, not just a teacher on youtube; thanks.

I could never understand why people would want to do an entire painting with pencils. It’s so much easier to use paint. But I do use pencils for texture in backgrounds mainly using sandpaper to add small amounts of pigment to a wet wash. You did a beautiful job on both paintings. True artist Paul!

Paul, this is by far the best tutorial and evaluation I’ve seen concerning WC pencils vs paint. I learned to use the pencils when I had very little space and had to be ultra mobile. As a result, I have found I can use pencils the color I want from an assortment of 66, while using a water brush and can turn out some nice pieces. Again, thank you for this video!

My birthday was this month and I used a gift card to buy some watercolor pencils. I got them specifically for your boats & naples yellow video. I LOVE naples yellow, but have only used it for florals. It makes beautiful rose blushes and peachy pinks as well as sage greens. So I was super excited to see your video. But I'm brand new to art and my sketching needs work. I thought if I bought the pencils, I could use them to outline in case my drawings were too rough. (Also I actually cried laughing at your intro and sent it off to a friend. I was talking about how much I love your videos and how your humor makes the tutorials more approachable this week, so I'm glad to have a great example to fire off!)

Oil and watercolour painting seems much easier in comparison. Have learnt a trick or 2 since and today's tutorial is simply amazing. Instead of blending with mediums or blenders, use clean water and the work is ready to take another layer.

Thanks Paul. You deserve a medal for using the academy watercolour pencils - they are as hard as bricks. The only decent watercolour pencils are Caran dache museum aquarelle and Albrecht Dürer but they are really expensive and it still takes ages to build up a painting. I wasted loads of money on pencils when I switched from pastels to watercolour, because I didn’t have enough confidence to just pick up a paintbrush. They are all packed away in a cupboard now I’m pleased to say :-)

My initial reaction was also like “ oh no! Not that, I’m done with birds!”
Thanks for all your efforts and teachings dear Paul

Thanks Paul. Pencils are kinda a forgotten media I think. I use the to add a bit of finishing touches to my struggling work. 😊

You spent a lot of time and money on this great lesson. And, the humor at beginning took time! Or was that from last night at bedtime? I vaguely remember being tied up like that once and not enjoying it. But I think HE had a good time, so...I am with you all the way on the pencils. I hated using those. I just don't see the point for a watercolorist. If you mostly want to draw and add some softness, OK. But, not for me. Loving those real-time sections, Paul! Thanks so much for this lesson!

Dear Paul! Thank you for your sacrifice! 😁😎(and I hope Margot didn't leave you in the dungeons for too long!) I bought a set of 12 watercolour pencils 15 years ago, and they are mostly still unused. 😅Seeing you compare them with watercolour so closely (and both with fabulous results!!!) has been very educational. I have to agree totally with you - for me traditional paint is best! But ... you reminded me that pencils could be integrated for certain elements in a painting. Thank you!

Thank you for this tutorial Paul. I have a set of watercolour pencils but never really know what to do with them & much prefer to just use the paint. Your paintings were both lovely as usual & so were the paintings at the end . Well done to all 😊

Fantastic tutorial Paul. I am just a beginner and since watching you work with watercolour pencils, I have fallen in love with the media. I wonder if you could do another tutorial with watercolour pencils? 😊😊

Thanks for this comparison. I only use watercolor pencils for sketching instead of a pencil because the lines then disappear. After watching this demo, I will try to use my watercolor pencils for more than just sketching! Love your videos….

Thank you Paul for yet another fantastic tutorial. My son had gifted me a box of water colour pencils last year and so far I did not get a good result from it. Birds of prey are my personal nightmare though they are so beautiful , Now I will try painting it your way ,with my pencils Thanks a lot .💐

Really enjoyed that Paul. Bought W/C Pencils recently and have mainly acrylic paints but my drawing is still far better than my painting. Use your drawing downloads quite a bit so thanks for them. Keep it going by far the best tutorials on You Tube. Cheers.

Paul I just love owls and your paintings and the ones from the group are all fantastic. I am about to try pencils as my daughter recently bought me some for mothers day here in Australia. I live in the West but am originally from west Yorkshire. I have done a few of your tutorials thank you for them
