I went to school for art and I completely agree! It’s so much better that way and WAY cheaper!! When I went to college for it, it was literally go to class, paint and do a critique once per week on what you learned and what your progress was and then repeat! Occasionally we’d be told of some business advice or things like how to stretch a canvas, but that’s pretty much it! If I had YT back then and it was as useful as it is now with pretty much an infinite amount of information at the tips of my fingers for the cost of an internet connection and YT subscription, I would have saved myself so much time and money on trying to get a degree and would have been able to learn far more being self taught than in class because I wouldn’t of had to spend HOURS per day in travel to get to class being away from my son. The best part I can honestly say though about in person learning that you can’t get on YT is being able to see other peoples’ artwork as a whole and being able to bounce ideas off of them in the process and not being able to get that constructive critique along the way, which CAN be very helpful. Much if that done this way is pretty much one sided so if you struggle with something like composition and don’t even know exactly what it is that is off about your painting, etc, you can’t get that feedback/suggestions on trying something different. Being self taught like that also doesn’t teach you what you need to know to know, but that kinda goes hand in hand with going to college and ‘wasting’ time learn things you will legit never use again after you leave that class. But being self taught, you have more of an opportunity to learn so much more and more things that will more than likely apply to what you’re doing or what your interests are. Being someone who’s very motivated to learn and just want to suck up everything I can when I want to actually learn something, it’s so much better than learning something because you ‘have’ to or because someone else thinks you ‘need’ to when in all reality, it’s only so you can jump through those hoops for that piece of paper that says you learned enough to get by.
An old friend of mine laughed when I first told him I was going to school for art and he said that art cannot be taught. In a way he was right, though I think he meant talent can’t be taught, but it is one of the many things that can be better learned elsewhere and doesn’t….or shouldn’t need a degree for.

Paul this piece is wonderful as usual. Something I would love to see is those little rules of painting. Like where to pain in a page, how it is darker in the foreground and perspective, textures etc.

It's ridiculous how much I look forward to watercolor Wednesday since I found your site. l go online early to see if there is a tutorial that week & save it like a miser - until late that day when chores are done. I savor them, but I'm a greedy beggar and they go way toooo quickly and I haven't found anything else to soothe my addiction. Except Margot's challenges. As with most, I have far less time than I'd like to work on this craft I love, but thank you both so much for your time and dedication to sharing techniques and places!

Haha, my cat (who seems to believe that he is a dog) objected to the strangled *guitar* sound. He enjoyed the music very much, though, or at least I did as I watched you create an interesting contrast between a warm, gentle autumn glow and knife sharp, cold rocks. Those tree and sky colours harmonise beautifully, and the blue at the bottom connects with their softness.
