  • Maintaining my equipment is a critical aspect for me...but maintaining my firearms! It's something that I am growing familiar with as I continue my journey through firearms ownership. And having a benchmark to go by, and torque values to aim for give me the proper confidence as I figure out how to properly maintain my gear. Beyond safety, I just simply can not afford to damage my equipment and following manufacturer's recommended torque values is a great way to be successful. In this video we look at the Wheeler F.A.T. Torque Wrench and I discuss it in detail.

I use the top of the red mark under the theory that slightly under-torqued is better than over-torqued and risk stripped threads.

I saw a poster on Amazon say they saw some old directions and that the line makes 5lbs of difference. It said to use the top which corresponds to what you want, but if you use the bottom, you're getting 5lbs more than you thought.

even though markings are in 5# increments..have found there are some in-between settings if you are careful and count them.

I got this to put on red dots on some of my pistols. I ended up with broken screws in 2 of my slides. The wrench was out of calibration out of the box.

7:00 I have the F.A.T. Wrench too and I've had this same question/issue. I noticed there's a little cut about the same size as the lines in the red and I've been calling that the actual mark. I wouldn't even know without calling Wheeler for a definite answer. Kind of wish they made that clear in their manual/website info.

I bought this exact same wrench to get more consistent results from my 10-22, which is now sitting happily in a Magpul Hunter X-22 stock, and my best groups so far are with 17-18 inch/lb. But, since mine isn't a take-down, in order to clean it, I have to remove the action from the stock and once in a while, even remove the barrel from the receiver (poor design on the part of Bill Ruger here... thank goodness someone figured out that by drilling a hole in the back of the receiver, you can feed a cleaning rod through and never have to remove the barrel), which means once the gun is clean, I have to reassemble it and then I'm faced with the problem of: how do I get back to the place where my rifle was shooting clover leaves? In comes the torque wrench, but then you realize, for a precision tool, they missed the EASIEST part to design for accuracy: the LINE ON THE GAUGE!!!! That line is big enough to cover a 2-3inch/lb spread! I have a variety of measuring and machinist tools and they all have a system to give you accurately a given reading (like my manual vernier calipers), so why make something like this so inherently inaccurate I don't know? I'll see if I can replicate my results after complete disassembly the next time I go to the range, but if not, I may be forced to sell it and get myself a more precise digital wrench. That being said, I do think it's time for Ruger to update the design of the 10-22 and deal with these issues that are 100% design-based problems. A hole in the back of the receiver for one thing, an aluminum bedding block in the stock for another and maybe even a second action screw in the back of the receiver while we're at it. After all these years, I doubt it will ever be updated by Ruger though, I think this is where the after-market comes into play. It's really too bad because I can't imagine them not seeing these problems when they were designing it...

Great comments and all very true! If you look deep into the thick red line you might have a thin depressed line that is visible on the torque indicator. I discovered that there seems to be one in the middle of the red line but is covered in paint and very hard to see. Thanks for watching!

I just picked one up from Optics Planet. They are running 17% OFF right now so $66.49. It's a nice affordable basic tool. My only complaint is the red line is so wide I'm not confident of exact setting. As you mentioned, do you use the top of the red line, the bottom of the red line or the middle? I first used mine for tightening screws on a pistol red dot sight. I like that the case has a compartment for additional bits. I needed a T10 bit for my first use. I took it from an old tool set, used it and put it in this Wheeler case for future use.

I literally looked this up to see if I was supposed to use the top of the line, the middle or the bottom after reading through the manual. Funny you said you dont know either 🤣. I agree though definitely go for the middle a lot safer. Just dont wanna break my 507 comp

Haha, figures right! I think the middle line is the way to go to be safe and within a close range

I have on my Amazon wish list a gearwrench torque screwdriver but have (if you live in the Midwest states) a Menards master force (their house brand) torque screwdriver and I like you added some square drive bits 1,2,3 and standard sockets since it is 1/4 inch drive to drive hex head screws and nuts other than the standard bits it comes with sae Allen and slotted and Philips bits and torx drive bits. I also have a torque wrench 1/4 inch drive with metric sockets and Allen bits. But I have heard of this brand of torque screwdriver and might give it a shot to see if it is worth it for me. My Menards brand called master force costs $69.99 /$70 and some change since I added the 3 bits (Robertson type ).

I think a torque wrench is critical for those who are fairly serious or care about their firearms maintenance. It would be soooo easy to strip or damage your gun...or even under-torque and things loosen up. If you're interested, Wheeler is a fairly solid firearms smithing tool manufacturer. thanks for watching!

An AR barrel needs more that 65 inch pounds I believe. That uses foot pounds.

    • @BlueBeretFirearms

You would use a standard long torque wrench (ft lbs) for AR barrels

There is a video on RUclips comparing screwdrivers. The guy tested them after using them 1000 times and this one remained +-2% after 1000 uses.
